DEAR MUSIC LOVERS
Welcome to Summer at SFJAZZ Center!
Summer in San Francisco is here and
June kicks off with the 34th Annual San
Francisco Jazz Festival! The Festival—
13 straight days with 43 concerts in
5 different venues representing artists from 7 different countries in SFJAZZ's Hayes Valley
backyard—opens with a free party on June 7 featuring: brass and gypsy music; classic
jazz on film; and local food, beer and wine. The Festival closes at Davies Symphony Hall
on June 19 with a one-time-only tribute to the legendary McCoy Tyner with pianists Tyner,
Chick Corea, Kenny Baron, Marcus Roberts, Benny Green and Taylor Eigsti, with guest
saxophonist Joe Lovano.
Some other highlights include: Cuban superband Los Van Van, tributes to Vince Guaraldi
and Allen Toussaint, the swing of the California Honeydrops and Cyrille Aimee, neo-soul
jazz newcomer Cory Henry and godfather Roy Ayers.
SFJAZZ Summer Sessions explores 6 different themes over 6 weeks with 55
performances. "Great Americas Songbook" is the umbrella theme for 5 of the 6 weeks of
Summer Sessions: The "Great American Songbook" (7/14–17) covers songs from Porgy
and Bess to Sondheim, blues to politics, and folk to Broadway; the "Mexican Songbook"
(7/21–24), presented in association with the Mexican consulate's Mex I Am festival,
features artists representing traditions to the most contemporary expressions; "New
Orleans Songbook" (7/21–24) goes to the birthplace of jazz with brass bands, zydeco
accordions, and the iconic Dr. John. Snarky Puppy (8/3–7) brings their stew of American
neo-R&B; the "Evolution of Cuban Piano" (8/10–14) provides a stage for 7 of Cuba's
greatest new pianists, anchored by maestro Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
Week 6 of Summer Sessions, “Film+Music” (8/17–21), brings together breathtaking live
performances with film classics, new experimental film and documentaries.
I want to give particular thanks to SFJAZZ Members, whose ranks quadrupled since
groundbreaking in January 2013—from 3,000 to 12,000. The annual support of Members
insures our mission of offering the highest level of music and education programs—and
the continued growth of jazz.
See you at the Center!

DEAR SFJAZZ PATRONS
Are you enjoying your SFJAZZ experience?
If you deeply love the music or are simply
curious to learn more, SFJAZZ has a
lineup of intriguing opportunities that are
perfect to round out your summer of jazz
and take you to another level of skilled
and cultural learning.
If you want to play along in a Master Class
with Snarky Puppy leader Michael League
or learn first hand about the roots of
Latin jazz from impresario and SFJAZZ
Board Member John Santos—we have
it. Not enough? Our Digital Music Lab is
programmed for summer learners who want to create their own tracks, gain command of
audio production and more. All the information is online at sfjazz.org. Click the Education
tab to see your options.
There is no shortage of choices of great music throughout the San Francisco Jazz
Festival, with 43 concerts featuring legends and locals in an exciting 13 day format at
SFJAZZ and other venues in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. Some shows are Members Only
and others may offer a Member discount. While it’s easy to join, you have to be a Member
to take advantage of some of these opportunities. SFJAZZ Members also receive free,
up-close access to our Listening Parties.
We begin our Evolution of Cuban Piano week on August 10 with an entertaining deep dive
into the Cuban piano tradition led by SFJAZZ Director of Education, Rebeca Mauleón,
at the keyboard. She’ll be on stage with other outstanding musicians to take you on a live
musical tour supplemented with historical Cuban recordings and plenty of insights.
We think you’ll love the Cuban Piano week, but all of Summer Sessions is curated as
a musical trip through hemispheres where you’ll be entertained and transported at
the same time. If that sounds a bit magical, then I hope to see you at one the four
opportunities to see Dr. John in late July for some unforgettable New Orleans magic.
Is there a better time for jazz and new music than summer? We are so happy to take
advantage of the longer days and vacation schedules to create great choices for concerts
and new opportunities for you to experience the music up close.
All the best,
Donald W. Derheim
SFJAZZ Chief Executive Officer
P.S. Did you hear that our Season 5 lineup includes a new class of Resident Artistic
Directors including the great Christian McBride, Mary Stallings, Vijay Iyer and Rosanne
Cash? SFJAZZ is your home for great musical experiences.
