from the EditorSeptember is, among other observances, National Preparedness Month. Most of re-
member where we were in August 2011 when the East Coast Earthquake hit. The event was so unexpected — snowstorms and hurricanes are so much more common here. But the earth shook, buildings swayed, trains stopped, and cell networks went down. Twitter still worked, and that was how many of us communicated that afternoon. Ever wonder what you would do in a more extensive emergency? Wonder no more! You can be prepared by visiting a new website, ready.marines.mil. The Marine Corps wants you and your family to have everything you need to be ready for an emergency. Visit the webpage for resources and downloadable family emergency plans. Or plan to attend a local workshop.
MCCS Henderson Hall’s Marine Corps Family Team Building LifeSkills trainer offers a workshop on the topic of preparedness on Tuesday, September 15, 9 – 11 a.m. Learn what to do in the event of a natural disaster, get tips for creating a family emergency plan, and find out what goes into an emergency kit. The workshop will integrate content from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Ready Marine Corps.
On a lighter note, MCCS has many events coming up: the Harvest Wine Festival —also featuring craft beers (see page 4), the Fall Family Fun Festival (page 10), and Glam-O-Rama (back cover), just to name a few. We hope that you will visit us on the joint base and see what we have to offer. If you can’t come here, visit our website www.mccsHH.com, for comprehensive information on all we offer.

The Marine Corps is flexing its muscle as the nation’s premier force in readiness with the September launch of Ready Marine Corps, the USMC’s emergency prepared-ness and public awareness program, coinciding with National Preparedness Month. Marines and their families are encouraged to learn about specific hazards throughout the month and participate in preparedness activities for America’s PrepareAthon! National Day of Action on September 30.
Supported by HQMC MCICOM’s Emergency Management Section within the Installation Protection Branch, Ready Marine Corps fosters a more resilient Marine Corps community and supports operational force readiness by encouraging indi-vidual preparedness.
The Department of Defense’s (DoD) overarching message for the month is “Don’t wait. Communicate. Make an emergency communication plan today,” Throughout National Preparedness Month, Marines are asked to make a written communication plan, so that each family member knows whom to call in an emergency and where to meet in the event they are separated.
“Having a written communication plan will ensure that everyone knows ahead of time how they can reach each other if separated and how to convey messages and remain safe until they are reunited,” explained Mark Brown, Emergency Management Section Head for MCICOM G-3 Installation Protection Branch.
Communication card and family emergency plan templates can be found at www.ready.marines.mil.
Each week of National Preparedness Month 2015 will focus on specific natural hazards, with the final week of the month focused on the lead up to the America’s PrepareAthon! National Day of Action.
• Week 1: Prepare for Floods• Week 2: Prepare for Wildfires• Week 3: Prepare for Hurricanes• Week 4: Prepare for Power Outages• Week 5: Participate in the Lead Up to the National Day of Action on September 30
Ready Marine Corps will be posting preparedness tips related to these weekly themes on the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ReadyUSMC and on Twitter @ReadyUSMC. In addition, detailed information on all hazards: natural disasters, disease out-breaks, manmade hazards, and terrorism can be found on the Ready Marine Corps website.
Visit Ready Marine Corps’ recently launched website at www.ready.marines.mil to learn how to take part in National Prepared-ness Month. Join/follow Ready Marine Corps social media to learn and pass on tips and encourage others to make a communica-tion plan for their families. Live Ready Marine Corps!

of-emergency (ICE) name and number.
Save the ICE information in everyone’s cellphone.
File a copy of emergency contact information with your individual command and/or family readiness officer. Place this form in a sealed envelope with your signature across the seal. This will be opened only in case of emergency.
Ensure everyone in the family knows how to dial or text the ICE contact.
Practice the communication plan.
