Cornelius Studifin. If you have bought anything in the last few years at the Marine Corps Exchange, you have, among others, this man and his team to thank. Cornelius is the MCX warehouse manager. This time of year, when holiday merchandise is arriving almost as fast as it can be received, Cornelius took a few minutes out of his busy day for a photo and to answer some questions. We asked him...

POST 9/11GI BILL
In my brief time at MCCS Henderson Hall, I have become aware
of great examples of volunteerism by our Marines — everything from
mentoring students at a local school to visiting veterans in retirement
homes. Volunteering is a gift that everyone can give, and I would like to
mention an opportunity in which I participated that gives extra meaning
to this holiday time of year.
In 2014, Arlington Cemetery is celebrating its 150th year of honoring
our fallen heroes. Twice a year we say thank you: on Memorial Day when
we thank those men and women who have given their lives in the service
of our country, and again on Veteran’s Day, when we thank you all who
served. But our servicemen and servicewomen sacrifice their time and
safety every single day of the year to preserve our freedoms. With so many
families going here and there, shopping at the mall, and participating in
special holiday events, there is no better time to express our appreciation
to our fallen.
On Saturday, December 13, 9:30 AM – 2 PM, volunteers will once again
lay wreathes on the graves at Arlington National Cemetery. A wreath is
placed at each headstone as a gift, from one appreciative American family
to another, through a private organization.
Wreath Laying by Brian MeersMCCS Marketing Advertising & Sponosrship Technician
This will be the 23rd year of the organized placing of wreaths at Arlington
National Cemetery during the holidays. Last year, 143,000 wreathes were
placed; in 2014, the goal is to place a wreath on the headstones of all who
are buried there, a total of 230,000. Every headstone represents a family, a
story, and most of all, a deserving veteran.
Last year I participated in this event and will go again this year. For most
people participating, the picturesque, wreath-laden graves may have been
the most obvious takeaway. For me, it was the volunteers — some of whom
were veterans themselves — placing the wreaths. Some families bring their
children to teach them about the sacrifices made by those who serve our
country in uniform. What was most evident was that volunteers fulfilled
the event’s mission: “Remember, Honor, Teach.”
This year’s motto is “Come with a Mission, Leave with a Memory.” If
you would like to volunteer your time to participate in this event this
year, please contact the Single Marine Program, whose members will take
part; everyone — not just SMP members — is welcome to participate. To
register, use the on-line registration form found at http://www.cnic.navy.mil/regions/ndw/about/community_services/community_service_sign_up_form.html.
