POST 9/11GI BILL

In November, many magazines and online media feature — along with recipes for green bean casserole and pumpkin pie — articles on gratitude. It’s the month of Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks; but gratitude is more than just being thankful.

Gratitude is defined in one dictionary as “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” Another dictionary is more concise: “a feeling of appreciation or thanks.” Giving thanks is an action, but gratitude — that’s what you feel, deep in your heart; it’s part of the cloth from which you are cut, something that no one can teach you if you don’t already know it.

When I first began working the Marines, I didn’t know much about the Corps, but I saw the immense pride the Marines displayed, especially on the Marine Corps birthday. And I liked being part of something traditional, honorable, and worthy. But I was woefully unprepared to fully appreciate my role. For example, while preparing the birthday ball print program, and knowing we were waiting for the Commandant’s birthday message, I asked when we would be receiving General Lejeune’s birthday message. I found out, with embarrassment, that General Lejeune had been dead for many years, and his message is read, by Marine Corps Order, each year when Marines gather to celebrate their birthday. There was so much

Gratitude...and the privilege of serving

by Doriann GellerMCCS Marketing Officer

to learn, and my boss, a former first sergeant, must have been exasperated with me at times ... but gradually I came to know and appreciate the history that imbues each Marine.

During my career, we civilians began being referred to as “Civilians Marines.” Frankly, I am not comfortable with that title, although I don’t begrudge those who use it. The title “Marine” is daunting, one “earned not given” to quote their recruitment ads, and one I don’t feel I have the right to use — even preceded by the word “civilian” — although I am honored by it just the same.

I love the Marine Corps birthday and the ceremony that surrounds it: the cake cutting, with its solemn procession of the cake flanked by Marines in “dress blues,” the ritual sharing and passing of cake from oldest to youngest Marine, the reading of General Lejeune’s message. On November 10th, I love to hear Marines wish each other “Happy Birthday.”

A few years ago, in the excitement of the day, I wished a Marine a happy birthday. He wished me the same, and I felt honored beyond words. The gratitude I feel to be privileged to serve the Marine Corps is something deep in my heart, the result of the honorable and noble history I have learned to appreciate, and, now, part of the cloth from which I, too, am cut. Happy Birthday, Marines!
