mccsHH Issue #9

October 2014

Bart MacMillan, Education & Career Specialist for MCCS Henderson Hall’s Personal and Professional Development Branch, has been one of our magazine’s biggest supporters over the years, contributing an article at least quarterly. We asked him to write again for this month, and, along with agreeing to be on the cover, provided an article, which starts on page 8. We also asked him a few questions:

What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Rocky Road — but I am not picky! What you do in your spare time? I am a musician and find that I am playing a lot

more piano these days than ever before. The VIP Duo is available for receptions, parties, weddings, bar mitzvahs...!

What was your favorite class in college? I was a music major in college, and except for “String Methods,” I really liked all of my music classes

Where do you call home? Kansas — I lived substantial portions of my life in Manhattan, Winfield, and Wichita . By the way, the fictitious character Mary Ann from “Gilligan’s Island” was said to be from Winfield, Kansas. She was also said to be employed by the Winfield General Store, but when I lived there, there was no such business. That’s Hollywood for you!

What is your favorite meal? Again, I am not picky, but I would say a toss-up between the Ribeye at Outback, the Taco Salad at Los Toltecos, the Tuna Salad at Subway and I confess a weakness for a majority of Wendy’s burgers. I also enjoy the tuna wrap at Java Café.

What makes you tick? I am a believer in the Body; as a Christian, I would call it the Body of Christ, but it is essentially the “world community” and the fact that everyone has an important role to play; when certain people or certain roles get over-emphasized at the expense of another person or role, for whatever the reason, it is the social injustice there that will get me riled up faster than anything else. I belong to a terrific parish community that gets this. This is a large part of why I enjoy working for the Marine Corps, as I have come to believe that the Marine Corps may get this better than any entity out there, as a whole. Second to this is the Baltimore Orioles; my mood will swing in the direction of their success....or lack thereof!

Admittedly, the title is a bit deceiving. The word, “cool” is becoming another U.S. Marine Corps acronym. “COOL” indicates, in this case, a new credentialing program that will soon be rolled out for the Marine Corps community. The full name will be “MC COOL” to stand for Marine Corps Credentialing Opportunities On Line. This program is still in development, but the focus will be to provide a means to help Marines fund the certification exams that exist for a number of professions. A handful of exams will be rolled out very soon, and effort will be made to add more certification exams in the not-too-distant future.

This will be tied into the USMAP — United States Military Apprenticeship Program — which is dedicated to providing apprenticeship certificate documentation of the MOS, or Military Occupational Specialty. Being a Marine is certainly honorable enough on one’s professional résumé, but being able to document the specific duty while in the armed forces can be helpful for a soon-to-be Marine Veteran, who seeks employment in a field similar to the active duty service assignments. The Marine will be able to earn certification and practical experience through MC COOL and USMAP.

So Cool! The Marine Corps becomes MCCOOL

The USMC strongly encourages the pursuit of college education; the Leadership Scholar Program, for example, is designed to facilitate Marines’ and veterans’ admissions into certain universities for which, on paper, they may not appear qualified. It is often recognized by some of the most prestigious schools in the nation, that the military veteran brings a strong skill set to the academic classroom; sometimes the admission standards held for the traditional civilian applicant can leave out an otherwise highly-qualified and capable student because the military experiences did not allow for the applicant to obtain some of the other desired life experiences.

All of this represents a more concerted effort by the Marine Corps to prepare its Marines and their families for a smoother transition into the civilian sector whenever separation happens from active duty service, regardless of being a medical separation, separation after only one tour of duty, or after twenty years of service and beyond. The “Marine For Life” is being significantly revitalized with an unofficial mantra that might read as ‘preparing for transition from the moment of enlistment.’

There are likely to be a number of announcements of new Personal and Professional Development programs over the next twelve to eighteen months, many perhaps, under the broad “Marine For Life” title. These times of the service drawdowns may create uncertainty, but they promise to be exciting times as the USMC addresses the best ways to prepare their Marine families for life after active duty service.

Henderson Hall has an energetic Personal and Professional Development office that includes education, personal finance, information referral and transition sections, with classes, seminars, workshops and even informational fairs. All within the Marine Corps community — active-duty and veteran families — are encouraged to contact the P&PD office to inquire about these activities, or for information and guidance.
