3. BUILDING PAPER OR UNDERLAYOur building paper or underlay isolates the lead work, to expandand contract freely within temperature changes. We recommendthe use especially on heritage jobs.

4. WOODCORE ROLLTo form lead work joints easily, try our softwood timber woodcorerolls, available in standard lengths of 1.2 and 2.4 metres.

SANDCAST WEIGHT CHART

RECOMMENDED SIZESMidland Lead produces sandcast lead in codes 6 (2.65mm), code7 (3.15mm) and code 8 (3.55mm). On our sand bed, we canproduce sandcast lead in lengths up to 6m. But the most commonlengths for sandcast is 3m and under – in order to handle theweight - with a typical (maximum) width of 1200mm.

QUALITY CHECKS

Sandcast lead is produced by the traditionalmethod of running molten lead over a bed ofprepared sand on a casting bench. At everystage of the production (preparation of the bed,lead casting and finish), our sandcast lead issubjected to scrupulous quality control.

As part of our quality procedure, you will find two different stickerson our sandcast lead:

• PLACE YOUR ORDER IN ADVANCEEach batch of sandcast lead is made to order.Generally, allow for 10 working days to have yourorder ready for despatch. For an estimate, get intouch with our office: +44 (0)1283 224 555.

• STORE YOUR LEAD WISELYMake sure you store your sandcast lead in a dry areaand off the floor – preferably on a pallet - while you’reworking on the job. Roofing jobs where sandcastlead is involved can be lengthy, so make sure yourlead doesn’t get damp or wet before you install it.

• USE PATINATION OILOnce the lead is on the roof, make sure you usepatination oil as soon as possible – but no later thanat the end of the day’s work. Using patination oilprevents white staining on the adjacent brickwork ofyour building.

PRESERVING THE PAST

Midland Lead works with English Heritageand the National Trust, as well as churchauthorities, homeowners, architects andplanners to ensure that each and everyheritage project we are involved in gets thespecialist attention it deserves.

Our approach to making sandcast lead gives you the best ofboth worlds. We make authentic sandcast lead, but we produceit in a modern manner. Our sandcast lead workshop has beenpurpose-built for the task and we use all the benefits of moderntechnology to ensure that our sandcast lead has just the rightthickness, offers the right tensile quality, and gives thatwonderfully authentic look.

Opposite is a list of heritage projects (English Heritage, listedproperty homeowners, church authorities) where our sandcastlead has been successfully installed:

• Every roll of sandcast lead is quality checked regardingthickness and weight. As soon as the sandcast lead has beenvisually checked on consistent thickness, each roll (cut to size)will go through our automated weighing scale, which will onlyproduce a label for despatch if the lead is within the agreedtolerance.

• Apart from the above quality checks, one of our highlyexperienced managers will handpick a lead roll from eachsandcasting batch to be thoroughly examined. This roll will beunrolled and visually inspected, checked on weight and thickness- using a micrometre - once more.
