Dear Parishioners,

A Joyous and Blessed Pentecost to all of you. I’m sorry I can’t be with you this weekend,

the second most important weekend (rather, feast) in the Church Year. I am in Philadelphia

now and will lead a pilgrimage of high school students to various places in the Philly area.

We will visit the shrine of St. John Neumann, the Polish National Schrine, Our Lady of

Czestochowa, the Cathedral Basilica of Ss. Peter and Paul – where I had my first Solemn

Mass. I’ll be back on Friday, May 25.

Yes, the Feast of Pentecost is second to Easter which is THE most important feast of the

Church. With Easter, we experience “re-birth” in Christ’s Resurrection, both mystical and

timeless. But Pentecost manifests a birth in creation and time, i.e., the birth of The Church.

Pentecost is known as the “birthday” of the Church, so, “Happy Birthday.”

This is the day on which the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles in the cenacle or

“upper room,” where they were all huddled together for fear of the Jews. The Holy Spirit

dispelled that fear and, with this new found courage, the Apostles emerged as new men,

ready to proclaim Christ to the world and also, ready to die for Him and the Church Whose

seeds they were going to plant. With the exception of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, all

the other Apostles were martyred for Christ. Of course, St. John experienced his own kind

of martyrdom, but, technically, was not martyred.

How many times did Our Lord say to His Apostles, His Friends, prior to His Ascension,

“Receive the Holy Spirit?” But, with this tremendous feast, it is the world who received the

Holy Spirit. This feast is the establishment of the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Confirmation, from the Latin, confirmare – to make, or to be made, strong (with/together).

This is the Sacrament that many of our young people received May 8 at St. Paul Church

and that another group of our young people will receive August 5. It is the descent of the

Holy Spirit that completes our “initiation” in the Faith and which, if cooperated with,

enables us to live our faith unafraid and with great determination. This is something of

paramount importance today. The Church is attacked on all sides, from without and from

within. Christ’s Church is hated with a rabid intensity in today’s world.

When I was a little boy, learning my catechism in school, I learned that the Sacrament of

Confirmation was going to make me a “soldier of Christ.” Alas, in today’s wussy society,

such a designation is decried as “violent” or “militaristic.” Yes of course, today, we have to

be nice to everyone, not offend or hurt anyone’s feelings. What clap-trap. As Pope Leo XIII

tells us, Catholics are born for combat. If we follow the dictates of the world, our “non-

combativeness” will ensure our destruction, be it by rampant Islam – you know, the

religion of peace, the homosexual juggernaut or our annihilation at the hands of those

wielding the scepter of political correctness which, if we’re not careful, has the power to

grind us into dust.

When I was confirmed, at the age of seven, the bishop didn’t shake my hand with the

words “Peace be with you.” Oh, the words were the same, but, instead of a handshake, I got

a slap! This was symbolic of the possibility that we may very well have to suffer for Christ.

Are we really ready to die for Christ and His Church today, my children and my friends?

We might have to – sooner than we think. Pray God we’ll be able to do it.

Father Magiera
