REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL OF 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME.

Have you ever sent out an email or text message that seems clear and direct to you, but the receiver totally missed the point of what you were saying? This of course happens a lot during our days of “smart technology.” Even with our best effort to keep up with all the messages that we get or send out to others—something is bound to get misunderstood. Why? Well, I think it has to do with things getting lost in translation: You’re attempting to communicate ideas and thoughts through words, acronyms or pictures (emoji) that don’t get interpreted how you intended them to be understood. During Jesus’ public ministry, many attempted to trick Him and confuse His words in benefit of their own advantage. Others simply felt that His message was too demanding. However, the core essence of His words and actions remained consistent: Be a builder of the Kingdom of God. Consequently, being a builder is one who understands that while we live our life, we are to be full members of society without ever losing sight of our belonging to God. There cannot be a division between being a good Christian and being a good citizen of society. This Sunday’s Gospel tells us of one such occasion when people who felt their lifestyles chal-lenged, go to Him with the attempt to twist His words and confuse His message. Having been challenged and confronted many times before, Jesus immediately responds to the question about paying taxes to Caesar: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.” The response that Jesus gives reminds us that our life cannot be divided between God and society. We can’t claim to be Christian disciples of Jesus Christ if we leave Jesus at the door of our Church and don’t take Him with us into our world. With this in mind, I’m reminded of how important it is for us at St. Joseph to lead by example. This remains a constant challenge. However, I can attest that we have great people in our staff attend-ing to the various needs of our School and Parish. Those of us who are leaders of the different ministries remain committed to being good stewards of the resources of our Parish and value each opportunity to make St. Joseph a welcoming community for all. Giving to God and giving to Caesar is without any doubt a challenge. But as disciples of Jesus and members of our Parish Community we cannot forget that there is no division between being good Christians at work or in Church, while driving or praying in our favorite pew in Church. We remain with an undivided heart both in faith and action. Father Miguel Hernandez Parish Administrator

POWER STRUGGLE Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierar-chy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday’s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus’ response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power—the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS First Reading — You shall not oppress an alien, for you yourselves were once aliens in Egypt (Exodus 22:20-26). Psalm — I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading — You became imitators of the Lord, so that you became a model for all believers (1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10). Gospel — You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:34-40). The Bethlehem Christian Families The Holy Land

November 18 & 19 2017, the Bethlehem Christian Families will be here to sell their hand carved

religious articles made of olive wood. The sale of these precious articles supports their Church Mission which is to maintain the roots and the existence of the Christian Families who are struggling to remain in Bethlehem. At least ninety percent of the funds raised through these sales go directly to Christians living in the Bethlehem area. The proceeds will create more work which will help them to survive and stay in the Holy Land since they have no other source of income and are dependent on the olive wood industry.

Thank You for your support and generosity.

ADVENT OF THE SAVIOR: The Infancy Narratives of Jesus

The infancy narratives have enriched the lives of believers through the centuries. These accounts serve as overtures to the writing of the evangelists and as bridges connecting the Old and New Testa-ments. They point back to the history of Israel, and forward to the ministry of Jesus, culminating in the cross and resurrection. This short, four-week study, perfect for your Advent reflection, will not meet over Thanksgiving Week. You may register for sessions held on:

Sunday mornings (Nov. 12- Dec. 10) 10 AM-11:30AM

Tuesday evenings (Nov. 14-Dec. 12) 7:00 PM- 8:30 PM

Wednesday mornings ( Nov. 15-Dec. 13) 9:30 AM-11:00 AM

We will use the materials from the Little Rock Scrip-ture Study Program. Registration forms are availa-ble in the Parish Center Office. For more information, contact Kathleen Li at [email protected]

TRUNK OR TREATING” (Pedir dulces)
