Dear Parents, Children and Friends

The Season of Advent begins

This Sunday marks the beginning of the season of Advent. Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Advent gives us a vision of our lives as Christians and shows us the possibilities of life. The vision of life that Advent gives us is twofold; it looks back to the first coming of Christ at Bethlehem, and it looks to the future when Christ will come again. In the interval between these two events we find meaning for our life as Christians. In these few short weeks of Advent, we take in the sweeping panorama of time - from Christ's birth to his Second Coming. The season of Advent brings us the mag-nifcent vision of life and hope for the future given to us by Christ.

Sacred Heart Family Picnic and Carols on Friday

This wonderful evening will see the Parish and School joined to-gether as one Sacred Heart Community. The evening begins with a family picnic on the oval from 5.30pm and this year the P&F have organised a coffee and ice-cream van. We ask that ALL

Kindy to Year Six students meet at their classrooms when the siren/bell sounds at 6.30pm ready to begin carol singing at 7pm. The evening is expected to end at approximately 9pm. I look forward to a wonderful evening together.

Thanksgiving Mass: 6 December

ALL Year 2 to Year 6 students and their families are invited to attend our final Eucharistic celebration for the year. Students are to be dressed in full summer uniform and are asked to meet their teachers at their classrooms by 5.45pm at the latest. The Thanksgiving Mass will begin promptly at 6 PM.

Meet the Teacher: 6 December

Meet the Teacher Whole School Transition Day will take place on 6 December from 11am-12pm. Much effort goes into selecting the staff and matching staff to classes for the following year. Year Six Final Assembly: 8 December

You are invited to attend the Year Six Assembly on the final day of the school year Friday 8 December. This is our last whole school gathering for the year and a wonderful opportunity to farewell our 2017 school lead-ers who have made such a positive impact on our school community.

End of Semester Reports

Parents will receive their children’s End of Year reports on 8 December. It is important to note that:

Expected progress is the maintenance of a grade.

If the student receives the same grade for two consecutive reports, they have made progress.

If you require an interview with your child’s class teacher to discuss the report, these will be conducted on Monday 11 December. Please ring Mrs Hall at the office or see your class teacher to make an appoint-ment, if required.

May God bless our school and those within it.

Last week the Year 1 Classes went on an excursion to Hoyts Car-ousel where they watched “The Star” a beautiful Christmas story.

Within the bountiful religious tales of Christianity, no tale is more well-known, celebrated, and as poignant than the tale of the birth of Jesus Christ. Called by other names, including the Nativi-

ty Story, the First Noel, the Holy Night, etc, this paramount tale in all of Christendom tells of how Mary of Nazareth` (the Virgin Mary) conceived her son by the Holy Spirit (or by the celestial Angel Gabriel in some accounts) and how she and her husband Joseph journeyed to Bethlehem where she gave birth to a son…. named Jesus of Nazareth (Jesus Christ). The nativity story plays an instrumental part in our Christian faith, standing as a hallmark event for the religion that played a major role in its foundation. Of course, the people of the Christian faith still celebrate the day of Jesus’s birth in today’s world (25 December) Christmas Day.

Following the movies we took the bus to Mills Park in Beckenham for lunch and a fun run around. The nature play spaces gave the students the exciting opportunity to play and interact with the nat-ural environment.

Thank you to all the lovely parents and staff who came with us as helpers.

GRADUATING YEAR SIX CLASSES

Each year the Graduation Class presents the school with a "present" that can be used by the school community. On behalf of the 2017 Year 6 Cohort and the Graduation Com-mittee - we would love to present to the Sacred Heart com-munity a Buddy Bench. A Buddy Bench is where children to can go when they want to talk or play with someone. It is a simple idea to eliminate the feelings of loneliness and anxie-ty some students feel during recess and lunch, and to foster friendships on the playground. The aim of the bench is to be a safe place where students can sit should they be feeling excluded, lost or lonely and where other students can build new friendships with those may

choose to sit on the bench.

You will find this brightly coloured bench located somewhere magical and ready to use this week. It has been painted and signed by the Class of 2017.

Advent Message from Catholic Mission

This Advent, “Let us love, not with words, but with deeds.” (1Jn 3:18). Why not make this line from Holy Scripture a reality by joining us on Thursday 14 December, 7pm at The Basilica of St Patrick, Fre-mantle for a captivating and beautiful evening of sacred music, readings and congregational carols to highlight the true meaning of the Christmas Gospel in our world today.

Emeritus Bishop Justin Bianchini will be giving the reflection. Music from Eva-Marie Middleton (soprano), Paul Wright (violin), Dominic Perissinotto (organ) and The Basilica Choir. Proceeds will go to Catholic Mission’s work in support of maternal and child health in Uganda. Tickets $30, Concessions $20, 12 year olds and under are free. Add another ticket to your booking for just $10 and we will give that ticket to a homeless or refugee person so they too can share in the beauty of Christmas with us and enjoy a nice supper beforehand. MercyCare is a leading not-for-profit Catholic provider of aged care, family, health, disability and community

services. We understand how important it is for people to remain independent in their own home, and with the

many changes that have occurred in aged care over the past few years, we know that this can be a very con-

fusing, overwhelming time for everyone. Our Community and Home Support services are here to simplify the

process. We have a range of flexible services, and can even help individuals over the age of 65yrs to access

Government funded assistance.

Support can include everything from social activities, keeping up with household tasks, and even in-home nurs-

ing and medication management. Support is also available to carers when the time comes to take a break.

Please contact Samantha from MercyCare to discuss the options that are available to help you and your loved

ones. T: 6228 1537 E:[email protected]

One of the first questions to ask yourselves if your child is having difficulties at school could be ‘Is my child getting a good night’s sleep.’ If not, perhaps looking closely at your child’s sleeping arrangements may be the solution to your child’s issues at school.

Does your child go to bed -

at a later time than is necessary

with the T.V/video on most of the night

hear loud noises or arguments as they sleep

on a soiled, wet, uncomfortable mattress/pillow with dust mites, fleas and/or bed bugs that will annoy them all night

co-sleeping with a parent instead of sleeping in their own bed by themselves

feeling insecure and scared because they have watched or played a violent movie/video game or had an argument with their siblings or parents before they went to sleep

These and other such issues disturb your child’s sleeping cycle for their brain to process and balance the day’s activities. Research states that these such issues not only cause problems the following day causing your child to be grumpy, tired, listless, have memory loss, behavioural problems, tantrums and/or feeling physically sick, but have long lasting issues causing brain damage that will last the lifespan. If they have a good night’s sleep most nights, they will be able to sleep well and wake up refreshed in the morning, ready to commence a new day with vitality and enthusiasm.

If you, as an adult cannot sleep well, think back to your sleep routine when you were a child. Do you think that such issues as your anxiety, depression, mood swings, sleep issues are due to how you slept as a child? Do you want the same for your child as they grow up?

Quite often fixing these issues for your child and yourself at night-time will be a win-win situation that will not only improve your child’s behaviour and willingness to learn but may even help to improve your disposi-tion as well. Oh, what a relief that must be.

Parents who are also fatigued after a long day at work quite often may give in to the attention seeking strategies that children often use to postpone bedtime, allowing them to stay up until they go to sleep on the couch or until the parents go to bed or sleep in the parent’s bed. Parents need time without their chil-dren. This can also be a win-win situation when your child is able to have a healthy night’s sleep and you, the parent, have some time to yourself to have a good night’s sleep as well.
