This Weekend: Special Collection for Retired Religious Sisters

This weekend’s special collection helps to provide for the needs of our 2,000 retired sisters. These beloved women have served us in parishes, schools, hospitals and social services of the Archdiocese for more than 54,000 years collectively. Please take this opportunity to thank the sisters who embraced the call to serve us so faithfully for so many years. In their time of need now, every contribution makes a difference. Today, 80% of the sisters’ healthcare and retirement expenses go unmet by social security benefits. Thank you for your generosity and prayerful support of the sisters.

November 18 ~ Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are nearing the end of the Liturgical Year when the readings call us to think about the “end times”. Even though we don’t know when death will come, it is not a time to be comfortable and complacent, because “of that

From Fr. Dan, Administrator

Dear Friends,

Bishop Accountability – was progress made in last week’s meeting of the U.S. Bishops? I fervently hope so! I pray that the well-being of the victim/survivors were and are the top priority and the laity will be playing a crucial role.

Thanksgiving Day and Happiness: Three keys to happiness are: gratitude, loving relationships and service. These three things are the focus of Thanksgiving. Is that why so many people say it is their favorite holiday? It also points out that the way to everyday happiness includes: gratitude, loving relationship and service.

G.K. Chesterton: “When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.”

Thomas Merton: “To be grateful is to recognize the love of God in everything.”

Alcoholics Anonymous: “Put gratitude in your attitude.”

Amit Sood, MD: Gratitude expands generosity. The more thankful you are, the more reasons you’ll find to be thankful. What you focus on expands. Gratitude lead us to share with those less fortunate. Living in the USA, we have material blessings millions do not have. Include gratitude in your prayers. Gratitude boosts our

happiness.

Pope Francis: Chr istian life is above all the grateful r esponse to a generous father , not a forced, joyless compliance to a series of obligations. This is “the secret” to the Christian approach, which is Jesus' approach - to know one is loved by a father and to love others in turn, the pope said. The foundation of everything a Christian does isn't based on a sense of obligation: “I must do this, this, this…” he said. “No. The foundation of this duty is the love of God, the father, who gives first and then commands,” he said; it's a situation based on a relationship and personal experience between father and child. Francis said it is important for people to ask themselves, “How many beautiful things has God done for me?” Recognizing all these gifts “liberates us,” he said. God did not call us to life in order to remain oppressed, but to be free and live in gratitude, obeying with joy the Lord who gave more than anyone could ever give back. (Excerpted from Catholic News Service, 6/27/18)

Sports: Next week, the Pats will ground the Jets. Have the Sox made any trades or signings? I would focus on the bullpen. I am grateful we are world champions!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! ~Fr. Dan

“The Mass is ended, go in peace. Thanks be to God.” Just kidding. We’re going to sing one more hymn, even though the presider just told you to leave. Oh wait, a lot of you have already left. And a lot of you are packing up to leave right now. And the rest of you are looking at me like you don’t like me because you heard the word “go” and you really want to go but your good old Catholic guilt is compelling you to stay. So let’s make a joyful noise, now, shall we?

If I had a dollar for every time I encountered the above reac-tions to the recessional hymn in my experience as a cantor, I would have many dollars. To be fair, not every Sunday plays out in the way I’ve described above (only somewhat exagger-atedly). Some Sundays and major feast days I would see con-gregations pick up their hymnals excitedly after hearing the hymn announced or seeing it in the worship aid. Celebrations of greater solemnity—Christmas and Easter and their respec-tive seasons, Epiphany, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christi—these occasions lend themselves well to a recession-al hymn, allowing those present to continue contemplating a particular facet of the Paschal mystery they have just cele-brated before going back out into the world.

But do we really need a recessional hymn every week? As a liturgical musician, I’m aware of the irony in my asking this question. I’m sure it will seem as though I’m advocating slacking off in the duties of music ministry by reducing the number of hymns. But the reality is, the recessional hymn hasn’t always been a part of the liturgy, and even now, we aren’t required to have one.

From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) regarding recessional hymns: .………. That’s right. There’s nothing in the GIRM that requires a recessional hymn. Here’s what it instructs regarding the Concluding Rites:

To the Concluding Rites belong the following: 1. brief announcements, should they be necessary; 2. the Priest’s Greeting and Blessing, which on certain days

and occasions is expanded and expressed by the Prayer over the People or another more solemn formula;

3. the Dismissal of the people by the Deacon or the Priest, so that each may go back to doing good works, praising and blessing God

4. the kissing of the altar by the Priest and the Deacon, fol-lowed by a profound bow to the altar by the Priest, the Deacon, and the other ministers. (§90)

That’s it. The priest tells us “Go in peace,” and we’re sup-posed to go. The instinct to leave the church right after the dismissal is the right instinct. We’ve been sent forth to “go back to doing good works, praising and blessing God.” Ite missa est.

So why the addition of the extra hymn? This practice arose partially as a carry-over from Protestant worship, where hymn singing was much more prominent from the beginning of the Reformation. From a logistical and perhaps aesthetic standpoint, too, it makes sense to lend the liturgy a certain symmetry: we begin in song; it makes sense that we would end in song. And yet, the fact that the recessional hymn still hasn’t been added to the GIRM, even after years of use in liturgical practice, says something. It says that, having partici-pated in the source and summit of our faith, we have work to

do, and we can’t put it off long enough to sing even one more hymn. We’ve got to get back out there and bring Christ to every-one we encounter while we are still bearing him physically within our bodies as living tabernac-les. Now that we’ve been nourished in our Father’s house, we’ve got to be about our Father’s business out in the world.

There is a beautiful urgency in the lack of a recessional hymn. We gather in the noble solemnity of the Introductory Rite with the entrance chant or hymn, but over the course of the liturgical celebration, something happens to us. We are trans-formed. And we are sent out in this transformed state so that we in turn may transform the world. A favorite image of mine for this mysterious reality is that of a particle accelerator. When we receive Jesus Christ himself, present in the Eucharist—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—we become little particles infused with divine ener-gy, sped up in our movements until we reach maximum ve-locity and collide with other little particles, creating a beauti-ful explosion of energy that brings light to a darkened world.

Of course, all of this isn’t to say that the post-Communion liturgical action can’t be punctuated by music. Again, turning to the GIRM, we learn: “When the distribution of Commun-ion is over, if appropriate, the Priest and faithful pray quietly for some time. If desired, a Psalm or canticle of praise or a hymn may also be sung by the whole congregation.” (§88)

Yet, if the moment after Communion becomes the locus of our singing, the theological focus shifts: from the quasi-self-congratulatory missioning hymns so often sung after the final blessing and dismissal to a moment of musical contemplation at the sheer gratuitousness of the gift we have just received in receiving Jesus himself. And indeed, to amend my earlier advocacy of an occasional recessional hymn for certain feasts, I would in fact argue that the moments after Commun-ion are when particular facets of the Paschal mystery can be contemplated more deeply. “For we can only wonder at ev’ry gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies with-out end.” “Worthy is Christ the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.” “O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.” Singing these texts after Communion has the capacity to imbue them with a deeper Eucharistic richness; it can bring them to life in new and profoundly beautiful ways within the hearts of the congregation.

But what to do in lieu of a recessional hymn? Play an instru-mental piece, leave in prayerful silence (especially appropri-ate during penitential seasons), or, if the congregation is formed to sing, choose a brief acclamation that accompanies the presider and liturgical ministers as they process out of the sanctuary. Any one of these options will provide a sense of closure to the liturgy while still avoiding the scenario with which I began this post.

At the risk of incurring criticism from my peers in the field of liturgical music, the more I think about it, the more I come to

Psalm: Trace the words and

learn to pray like Jesus!

Learn at Mass The Lector reads from the Scripture at a stand called

the ambo. Can you find the ambo in the church?

Gospel: In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about coming back to Earth.

Listen to the words of the Gospel and add details to the picture below.

believe that singing a recessional hymn is a mixed sign. We’ve been told to go. We should go. We shouldn’t stand around singing about how the Mass missions us to be disci-ples in the world, because there’s a danger that singing about this discipleship is all we’ll ever do. Imagine what would happen if, after the final blessing, instead of singing one more hymn, the congregation immediately went out as a parish into the community and participated in forms of service together. What a concrete sign of Eucharistic love that would be!

We need to strike while the iron is hot. We need to go out into the world, bursting through the doors of the church like accelerated particles to collide with the particles who need the Good News, proceeding in haste to those who need us, like Mary did when she visited Elizabeth in the wake of the Incar-nation. When Mary received Jesus in her body, she didn’t wait around. She got up. She left. She went to those who needed her and shared with them the Good News that the

Messiah had come at last, taking on our very flesh in order to redeem it. When we receive Jesus into our bodies, we should-n’t wait around either. The people in our communities need this Good News, perhaps now more than ever, and instead of just singing about it within the walls of the church, we should do what we’re told: “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord with your life.” And emboldened by the presence of Jesus himself within us, we will be given the courage to “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation” (Mk 16:15). -Carolyn Pirtle

We began printing this series on April 15, starting with the Entrance Song, and now we’ve gone all the way through to the Recessional Hymn. Our Lady’s News

Book of Remembrance Traditionally, we pray throughout November for the Faith-ful Departed. The Book of the Faithful Departed will be available on a table in the gathering space at the back of the Church so that we can inscribe the names of our loved ones who have died. They will be remembered in prayer at Masses throughout the month of November. Also, the Book of Intentions will continue to be available on the po-dium in the gathering space. This Book enables others to join us in praying for people in need and for situations about which we are concerned.

We Need Your Help at Mass Would you like to become more involved in the Our Lady’s community? Consider serving as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, or Greeter at Mass. We are in need of volunteers at all Masses. We are happy to have you serve according to your availability, whether that is every week or once a month. For more information, please contact Maribeth Scott at 617-469-8110 or [email protected].

Lost and Found If you’ve misplaced an item, remember to check our Lost and Found bin, located in the work sacristy of the church. We have a collection of hats, gloves, umbrellas, reading glasses, prayer books, and so on. Items are donated after several months in the bin, so take a look!

Religious Ed for Older Children Do you have an older child who was never baptized or nev-er received their First Holy Communion? Do you have a child with special needs who would like to join our faith formation/religious education program? It’s never too late, and your situation is not as unusual as you may think! We help children of all ages, at all levels, in ways that are com-fortable for them. Contact Rosemary for more info (617-527-7560 ext.213, [email protected]).

Grand Annual Collection By now, you should have received a letter from Fr. John and Fr. Dan requesting your participation in our 2018-2019 Grand Annual Collection. This collection supplements our weekly offertory and lease revenue and is crucial to help us meet our financial obligations.

As of November 14, we have raised $91,712 from 221 parishioners. Thank you!

Our goal is $200,000, and we need everyone to take part in order to attain that goal. Whether you give $100 or $300; $1,000 or $5,000, your gift will be appre-ciated as it promotes the wellbeing of Our Lady’s.

Blue donation envelopes are available at the doors of the church. Thank you for your generous support!
