6th Sunday in Ordinary Time "But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment." In today's Gospel, Jesus takes the Ten Commandments to a deeper level. Instead of focusing merely on external actions, like murder or adultery, Jesus wants us to examine what is in our hearts, like anger or lust. These internal dispositions are the root cause of the outward sins. Jesus is teaching us to take responsibility for our attitudes as well as our actions. Some may say that we cannot control our inter-nal thoughts and feelings, or that it's unrealistic to expect us to eliminate anger and lust from our inner selves. But, as Saint Therese of Lisieux put it, Christ would not command the impossible. So it must be possible to purify our hearts and control our thoughts. But we don't have to do this on our own power. Jesus expects great things of us, but he doesn't expect us to do them alone! Through the presence of his Spirit in our hearts, we have divine assistance to accomplish this task. When we pray to God for the gift of the Holy Spirit, he responds by filling our hearts with the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit-wisdom, under-standing, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, mod-esty, self-control, and chastity. When these wonder-ful things are present within us, the bad things have nowhere to settle. Dear Parishioners, I first want to start off my weekly article with an apol-ogy. Last Sunday was known as "World Marriage Day". Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until after Sun-day's Mass. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who are married in the Church. When you came together on your Wedding Day, you vowed before God and to one another: "to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health", and "to love and honor you all the days of your lives". Through adminis-tering this Sacrament to one another, you made a covenant before God, as the priest or deacon witnessed this beauti-ful moment. Unfortunately in our day and age, many people are no longer getting married in the Church. Not only do we live in a time where the very definition of Marriage between one man and one woman is being challenged, but the very concept of Marriage as a Sacrament and covenant before God and to one another is viewed as archaic and "old fashioned". All you have to do is turn on the TV and see that there are very few shows and movies that extol the beauty of Marriage between a husband and a wife, who are committed and faithful to one another. With all this in mind, I would like to put out a few challenges to those who are not married in the Church. If you decided to "marry" outside of the Church, I invite you to take the necessary steps to fix that situation, so you will be able to receive Jesus in Holy Communion again at Mass. Maybe there is a need for an annulment from a previous marriage, or something else that is preventing you from getting mar-ried in the Church. I invite you to come speak to me, so that we can rectify the situation. Besides those who are civilly "married", there are others who are living together like they are "married", but have not yet made that com-mitment before God and to one another. If you are in this category, I suggest that after some serious prayer, you change your situation, whether it is through getting mar-ried in the Church, or physically separating from one an-other so as to discern with more clarity if he or she is the one that you want to get married to. Lastly, for those who are single and possibly discerning the vocation of mar-riage, I invite you to begin a practice that I believe helped me in my own vocation of marriage to the Church as a priest. Pray one Hail Mary each day, and place your vo-cation into our Blessed Mother's hands. Just as she led me to my future spouse, so I believe that she will do the same for you if you just simply ask her to. Let us continue to pray for one another as we journey to our Ultimate Wedding Day, when the Lord will hope-fully say to each one of us, "well done my good and faith-ful servant"( Mt 25:21). By Dr. Scott Hahn Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Affair of the Heart Jesus tells us in the Gospel this week that he has come not to abolish but to “fulfill” the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. His Gospel reveals the deeper meaning and purpose of the Ten Commandments and the moral Law of the Old Testament. But his Gospel also transcends the Law. He demands a morality far greater than that accomplished by the most pious of Jews, the scribes and Pharisees. Outward observance of the Law is not enough. It is not enough that we do not murder, com-mit adultery, divorce, or lie. The law of the new covenant is a law that God writes on the heart (see Jer. 31:31–34). The heart is the seat of our motivations, the place from which our words and actions proceed (see Matt. 6:21; 15:18–20). Jesus this week calls us to train our hearts, to master our passions and emotions. And Jesus demands the full obedience of our hearts (see Rom. 6:17). He calls us to love God with all our hearts, and to do his will from the heart (see Matt. 22:37; Eph. 6:6) God never asks more of us than we are capable. That is the message of this week’s First Reading. It is up to us to choose life over death, to choose the waters of eternal life over the fires of ungodliness and sin. By his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has shown us that it is pos-sible to keep his commandments. In baptism, he has giv-en us his Spirit that his Law might be fulfilled in us (Rom. 8:4). The wisdom of the Gospel surpasses all the wisdom of this age that is passing away, St. Paul tells us in the Epistle. The revelation of this wisdom fulfills God’s plan from before all ages. Let us trust in this wis-dom, and live by his Kingdom law. As we do in this week’s Psalm, let us pray that we grow in being better able to live his Gospel, and to seek the Father with all our heart.
