8th Sunday in Ordinary Time Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? The anti-anxiety message Jesus gives us today is not just ancient pop psychology. The point of this passage isn’t to give us a strategy for coping with our fears. Jesus is proposing something much more profound. He is teaching us how to eliminate our fears altogether. To put it simply, he tells us to get our priorities straight. This whole reflection on worrying culminates in the instruction to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. That’s where our freedom lies. When we concern ourselves with being in right relation-ship with God, our other concerns melt away. Deep down, we know that this life isn’t about bodily health or comfort. Those things don’t last an-yway. But freedom from fretting is more than simp-ly thinking about how it will all work out eventually in heaven. No. Jesus offers us more. He insists that our heavenly Father will provide for us, here and now. We only need to take him at his word. That means sticking to our part of the bargain by putting God first. What does this look like, this seeking God and not worrying about the rest? It looks like Mother Teresa giving up every material possession, living amongst the poor without any dependable income, and watching truckloads of food appear at her door-step unannounced. It looks like a check showing up in the mailbox of two struggling parents to cover the medical bills for their sick baby. It looks like the couple that tithes to its parish month after month, and still finds it has plenty to cover its expenses. In a word, it looks like trust. Trust in the divine provi-dence of a Father who loves his children.

"Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap,

they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Fa-ther feeds them. Are not you more important than

they?" - Mt 6:26 Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ?2001, 1998, 1970 CCD.

Dear Parishioners, As many of you know from last weekend, Troop-er and I had an unexpected visitor enter the yard next to the Church last Saturday evening. It was around 9pm when I let Trooper outside to do his busi-ness. Before you know it, he was quickly running to meet the visitor - we'll call him "Pepe Le Pew”. Pepe was very small in stature, but packed a power-ful punch. Unfortunately, Trooper found this out the hard way as he received a full dose to the face of Pe-pe's "sweet" aroma. This aroma was so powerful that it extended itself all the way into the Parish Cen-ter, church, and Rectory. As I was contemplating this amazing defense mechanism of such a small creature of God, I was thinking that as disciples of Christ, we need to be more like Pepe. Rather than leaving the bad odor that he left, that I'm still smell-ing everywhere I go even as I am in sunny Florida this week, we are called to leave a good, sweet aro-ma of the Gospel wherever we go. As our Holy Fa-ther has been challenging us to do, we are called to live the joy of the Gospel in all that we do. A simple smile, act of kindness, courteous gesture, encourag-ing words to others, and the like, show that we are followers of Jesus Christ. As we prepare for Lent to begin this Wednesday, let us ask the Lord to help us bring the sweet aroma of the Gospel to all we meet, even to those unexpected visitors. God bless! Fr. Sistare
