Letter from the Pastor Dear Parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish, On Thursday, November 26th our country will observing Thanksgiving Day. If we count the first Thanksgiving Day celebrated by the pilgrims in the fall of 1621, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day for the three hundred and ninety-ninth time! The pilgrims were giving thanks for the blessings of the abundant harvest that came to them after the particularly harsh winter and brutal loss of life among the pilgrims. We can learn a lesson from those first pilgrims. Thanksgiving Day is unique for us in the United States in the sense that it is a federal holiday and also most everyone takes the day off. Originally meant as a day to offer thanks and gratitude to God the Almighty among the citizens, it was a day that united us as a nation with that common purpose, thanksgiving. This year many may ask what is there to be thankful for? With the pandemic continu-ing to plague our world, we might be tempted to complain instead of compliment, to doubt instead of delight, to fear instead of to feast. While it is true that we are living through is a “first time” for us, it is by no means unique in the history of the people. Reflecting on the experience of the first pilgrims, they faced unknown hardships, they had no one to welcome them, no knowledge of the land or the people dwelling there, they had no communication with the old world. And yet they persevered by their hard work and their faith in God. We can do the same. We began the new year as we do every new year, with hope and anticipation for the good things to come. Christians always are hopeful and courageous. Hopeful in that we trust God our heavenly Father has only good and blessings prepared for us. Courageous when the world, sin and the devil do their best to undo the blessings of the Lord. We must face the challenge of the present pandemic with courage and hope based on our faith in God our Father. While we acknowledge the loss of loved ones to the virus and the true pain and mourning this has caused us, we remain firmly re-solved in the grace of God, to remain thankful and grateful for all the blessings we have received. I know it’s a cliche, but Thanksgiving Day should be a day to count your blessings and not your woes. It’s a day to rejoice with family and friends who are still with us, but also not to forget that in the Church we remain united with all our brothers and sisters who have died. If they are in heaven, they are rejoicing and giving eternal thanks to God. Let’s join with them on Thanksgiving Day (and every day!). In Christ, Fr. Velásquez

Mensaje del Párroco Estimado Feligreses de la Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón, El jueves 26 de noviembre nuestro país celebrará el Día de Acción de Gracias. Si contamos el primer Día de Acción de Gracias celebrado por los peregrinos en el otoño de 1621, ¡celebraremos el Día de Acción de Gracias por trescientas noventa y nueve veces! Los peregrinos estaban dando gra-cias por las bendiciones de la abundante cosecha que les llegó después del invierno particularmente duro y la brutal pérdida de vidas entre los peregrinos. Podemos aprender una lección de esos primeros peregrinos. El Día de Acción de Gracias es único para nosotros en los Estados Unidos en el sentido de que es un feriado federal y también la mayoría de las personas se toman el día libre. Originalmente pensa-do como un día para ofrecer gracias y gratitud a Dios Todopoderoso entre los ciudadanos, fue un día que nos unió como nación con ese propósito común, la acción de gracias. Reflexionando sobre la experiencia de los primeros peregrinos, se enfrentaron a dificultades desconocidas, no tenían a nadie que los acogiera, no conocían la tierra ni las personas que allí habi-taban, no tenían comunicación con el viejo mundo. Y, sin embargo, perseveraron por su arduo tra-bajo y su fe en Dios. Podemos hacer lo mismo. Comenzamos el año nuevo como lo hacemos cada año nuevo, con esperanza y anticipación por las cosas buenas que vendrán. Los cristianos siempre son esperanzados y valientes. Con la esperanza de que confiamos en Dios, nuestro Padre celestial solo tiene el bien y las bendiciones preparadas para nosotros. Valiente cuando el mundo, el pecado y el diablo hacen todo lo posible por deshacer las bendiciones del Señor. Debemos enfrentar el desafío de la actual pandemia con valor y esperanza basados en nuestra fe en Dios nuestro Padre. Si bien reconocemos la pérdida de seres queridos a causa del virus y el verdadero dolor y duelo que esto nos ha causado, permanecemos firmemente resueltos con la gracia de Dios a per-manecer agradecidos y agradecidos por todas las bendiciones que hemos recibido. Sé que es un cliché, pero el Día de Acción de Gracias debería ser un día para contar tus bendicio-nes y no tus aflicciones. Es un día para regocijarnos con la familia y los amigos que todavía están con nosotros, pero sin olvidar que permanecemos unidos en la Iglesia con todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas que han fallecido.
