NEWSLETTER: 2nd December 2015 TERM 4, WEEK 8

Dear Parents and Carers,

I can scarcely believe that we are so busily preparing for the final part of this term together! My reflections

this week have seen me scroll quickly down the Term planner, revisiting all the wonderful events and

occasions that we can look back on fondly and celebrate! We continue this week with the concluding events

that are such a special part of this Advent Season, and these have been occupying much of the children’s past

days. Many of our parents may need an additional reminder that the celebration of our 2015 year together,

Concert and Prize Night will take place on the School Oval this Friday 4th December from 6.00pm

sharp- the evening will see all classes perform their song item, and traditional Christmas Carols. We will

conclude with a family picnic, and it promises to be a wonderful evening for all to enjoy. Teachers will be

reminding parents about costume items this week, and we ask that all children arrive promptly at 5.45pm.

The evening will provide all families with the opportunity to come together and acknowledge the hard work

and beautiful voices of our boys and girls, who will shine in the Arts Learning Area, as they perform and

sing for all! Please note that families will be able to access the Oval with their picnic rugs and BYO supper

items from 5.45pm, with our evening commencing at 6.00pm. The children will be sitting in their class

groups with their teachers, until the conclusion of the night. Following this, all parents and children can

enjoy their picnic supper and coffee will be served in the School Hall.

Learning - Learning from our experiences.

Last Friday, our Kindergarten children were front and centre on the stage, delivering their Assembly item

songs- It was a full house, with many of our parents, grandparents and extended family able to celebrate the

wonderful growth and learning journey their boys and girls have made in this, their first year at Sacred

Heart! Thank you to Mrs McKenna, Miss Dinh, Mrs Greener, and Mrs Miocevich for their many hours of

work and preparation with the children- it was a fabulous presentation, and one that the Mayor of the City of

Vincent, Mr John Carey, will remember fondly!

As our term comes to its final weeks, teachers are busily attending to assessments and the analysis of our

boys’ and girls’ progress. This is in preparation for the Semester Two Reports, that will be issued by post to

all families, in the week following the conclusion of this Term. This enables our staff to continue with the

teaching and the presentation of content and concepts, until the very end of the term. Please ensure your

address and contact details are up to date at the Front Office, to ensure Reports arrive safely in the mail.

Our Year Sixes enjoyed a terrific day together to celebrate all that has been their final year together today, at

The Maze in Bullsbrook! Reports were very positive about the great day together, and the fun of the water

slide and animals- and despite a forgetful bus driver, who seemed to think that the children didn’t need to be

transported back to Sacred Heart, the day ran smoothly, courtesy of Mrs Sonia Caielli and Ms Renee Byrne-

King!

As always, learning out of a classroom brings rich rewards, but very significant obligations to us as a school

in providing supervision and support- our parent helpers today were very necessary to the success of the

excursion, and on behalf of our teachers, I extend my thanks to all parents for their continued contributions.

Engagement The promotion o f positive re lationships with our students/staff /parents.

The Year Six Graduation is scheduled for next Tuesday 8th December with Mass taking place at Sacred

Heart Church at 6.00pm, and our beautiful Dinner being served by our exceptionally capable Year Five

parents, in the Hall from 7.30pm. We look forward to a very special celebration.

Accountability Tak ing responsib ility for the q uality o f our work .

The Sacred Heart School Board and Parents and Friends Association gathered last week in the School Hall to

conduct their respective Annual General Meetings. I was very pleased to have been joined by our staff and

many of our school community members. The AGM is where the presentation of the 2016 Budget and

School Fee Schedule is made, and additionally, the election of ordinary and Executive members to both

parent bodies took place. I wish to acknowledge the generous service offered by parents in our school

community who have volunteered their time, and wish to contribute so positively to our journey together in

providing a “Sacred Heart” education for our boys and girls. It continues to be a very real pleasure to work

with parents who are committed to serve the school, in order for all children to benefit. Well done everyone.

Discipleship Living out the teachings o f Jesus.

This Sunday, sees the Church season of Advent continue with the lighting of our second candle. Our school

conducted an Advent Wreath ceremony last Monday, with the Year Six children leading us all in prayer and

a Christmas carol to follow.

Advent is a season of joyful waiting. This week’s gospel calls us to prepare ourselves for the coming of the

Lord.

John went preaching. “Turn away from your sins, be baptised and God will forgive your sins.” For it is written in the

Book of Isaiah; “Someone is shouting in the desert. Get the road ready for the Lord, make a straight path for him. Every

valley shall be filled, every hill and mountain made low. And all will see God’s salvation.”

What is your family doing to approach Advent positively?

In closing, can I ask that we all call to mind the work of our teachers and staff at this busy time- I’m sure

many of you are experiencing the usual busyness of this time of the year, and our staff all continue to work

hard to accomplish all that is required of them as the year concludes. Their families are probably longing for

them to return to their homes at more reasonable hours! At this special time of the year, we are reminded of

those who are not with us, and I ask that we keep the ones we love, in our prayers.

Many thanks and God Bless,

Mrs Tanya McGuire

Principal

A Prayer for Lighting the Advent Wreath The liturgical year begins with Advent, a word derived from Latin that means "coming." During Advent we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. Enjoy this prayer with your children and family as you light the Advent wreath candles. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the universe. You sent your Son to be the Light of the world and to spread his light of love to all. As we light the candles of this wreath, may its growing brightness remind us of the approaching nearness of your Son. So that the day of His coming may find us prepared and filled with joy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

SCHOOL NEWS Engaging Hearts and Minds - Learning about Being Confident in Kindy Over the past couple of weeks we have noticed how grown up and confident all the children in our class have become. We have started telling news this term and we realised that we had to be confident to do this in front of our class mates. We also discussed our upcoming assembly and how we needed to present this in a confident way for everyone to enjoy. On a simple "T chart" we described what we thought being confident looked like and sounded like. These were the suggestions that we came up with as a whole class. Being confident looks like: - Standing tall - Shoulders back - Chins up - Eyes looking straight at others - Smiles Being Confident sounds like: - Clear voices - Audiences listening The Kindy children role played confident and non confident speakers and our photos show this by our body language. Being confident isn't just about how we speak to others but it's also about feeling really good about something that we have done, and it's no exaggeration that the Kindy children felt really good and confident about the way they presented their assembly. Mrs Marie McKenna (Kindergarten Teacher)

Year 6 Excursion Yesterday, the Year 6 class celebrated their end of Primary School with a trip to The Maze, Outback splash in Bullsbrook. They had a fun day problem solving and making their way through the various mazes. They enjoyed seeing a variety of animal life and had a super time on the water slides. We were fortunate enough to have an extended period of time in the mini golf area, where several students celebrated a hole in one. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 6 students for their impeccable behaviour on the excursion and to the Year 6 parents for all their support of the event and their continued support this year. Thank you! Mrs Sonia Caielli and Ms Renee Byrne-King Year 6 Teachers

SCHOOL BANKING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED in 2016 School Banking has been able to continue to run successfully throughout 2015 with the help of some very dedicated parents who so kindly volunteer half an hour of their time in the school library every Tuesday morning. A great big thank you to Jacinta Laffer, Clairly Lance, Maria Devlin and Vony Aditopo who have dedicated their time every week not only this year, but for the past several years now. For the school banking programme to continue to operate so well in 2016, we are looking for two or three wonderful parents or helpers who would be willing to assist us with the taking of deposits every Tuesday morning. The more helpers we have, the more we can roster the times that would be needed. Sacred Heart earns commission from the Commonwealth Bank on every deposit made and is a great fundraiser for the school. Please give some thought to donating a small amount of your time to this worthwhile programme. Feel free to contact Julianne Davidson on 0416 164 294 at any time, or call in to see us next Tuesday if you are willing to assist or would like further information. School Banking is every Tuesday morning from 8.30-9.00am in the Library. This is a great way to introduce your children to the benefits of regular saving. If you would like to join school banking, please feel free to open a Youthsaver account at any Commonwealth Bank for your child. Remember to take your child's full birth certificate and your driver's license or passport with you. Once you have the account details, pop into school banking and we can join your child up to the school banking program. The school earns commission from the Commonwealth Bank on every deposit made and is a great fundraiser for our P&F. If you would like to know more about School Banking at Sacred Heart, please contact Julianne Davidson on 0416 164 294.
