Weekly Reflections“HIS WORD TODAY” by Rev. William J. Reilly

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENTNovember 29, 2013

“May the Lord increase you and make you overflow with love for one another and for all, even as our love does for you. May he strengthen your hearts, making them blameless and holy before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all the holy ones.”

We end a month and begin a new season of prayer. The advent season rushes upon us, and in the coming weeks we will be filled with activity, busyness and excitement, recalling the birth of Christ and anticipating His coming to us each and every day.

The words of instruction  of the scripture can be the word of greeting on the cards you write and receive, as it reflects a wish, not just for Christmas, but our task for every day of advent. Words like ‘overflow’ or ‘strengthen,’ ‘blameless’ and ‘holy’ mark our approach  to this season of joy and peace.  May the first gift you receive or give be for yourself, to take a few minutes each day in quiet prayer, telling the Lord what your desire is for this season of preparation. Those few minutes can be the source of internal peace and  the comfort we need, in order to recognize the presence of the One who is to come.

Don’t let advent become a ‘lost season’ but a great opportunity to reflect on the Incarnation and our need for Christ’s coming today. Birth Parents Must Take Action to Preserve Their Privacy

For well over a century, the Catholic Church in New Jersey has provided adoption services. Throughout all those years, the Church promised to honor the privacy of birth parents and adoptees. That promise of privacy also was assured by law and affirmed by the State Superior Court. Those promises can no longer be kept. On May 27, 2014, a new law took effect that will allow adoptees and certain relatives to request and obtain the names of their biological parents beginning January 1, 2017.

Any birth parents who wish to preserve their privacy must submit a Redaction Request Form to the New Jersey Department of Health no later than December 31, 2016. By filing this form, birth parents will be able to keep their names off any documents provided by the State to adoptees or anyone else. The State made the Redaction Request Form public on August 3, 2015. The form can be downloaded at http://nj.gov/health/forms/reg-36c.pdf If you know a person who placed a child in adoption, please tell them that if they do not file a Redaction Request Form, their name and other information could be given to the adoptee.

Market Street Mission (with Helping Hands)Sacred Heart has once again been asked to help make

Christmas at the Market Street Mission a joyous occasion.

At Christmas the Mission collects donations for their Men’s Christmas Bags. They work hard to make the men feel like they are a part of the Mission family and one way they do this is by distributing gifts to the men at their Christmas Chapel on Christmas Eve.

These are some of the items the men would like: flannel shirts, thermal underwear, t-shirts, Flannel PJs…etc. If you are going to make a donation of the needed items, Helping Hands Ministry will deliver them for the Parish. We will place a box to deposit at the foot of the alter for the next 2 weeks.(11/28-29 and 12/5-6) Please call Market Street Mission for sizes still needed (973-993-2871).

Pizza with the Bishop If you are a young man in high school or college, or

even older, come join Bishop Serratelli and priests from the Diocese of Paterson for adoration,

reflection, fellowship…and of course, pizza on the following dates: Each Night at 7:00 pm.
