Weekly Reflections“HIS WORD TODAY” by Rev. William J. Reilly

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 4, 2015“Indeed the word of God is living and

effective, sharper than any two edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart… ‘You are lacking in one thing. Go sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven, then come, follow me.’”

We call these reflections ‘His Word Today’ asking that what we read and hear, might have an effect upon us here and now.  Surely, the teaching of Hebrew about the word and the question posed by the young man are familiar.

The former might lead me to ask if the word is truly alive, does it make a difference, does it really touch my heart, does that word lead me to a real encounter with Jesus?

The encounter of the one who met Jesus, could be the question I raise. I know the word and I try to put it into practice. I ask myself, what’s the one thing I am lacking?  Surely there is something I can or must do. I don’t need to wait for Jesus to tell me, I am aware of it because His word has touched my heart. Surely there is something I can give away to someone – money, kindness and concern, needed encouragement, and then, perhaps for the first time I can really say I am following Him.

May the word of God be truly alive and effective. Birth Parents Must Take Action to Preserve Their Privacy

For well over a century, the Catholic Church in New Jersey has provided adoption services. Throughout all those years, the Church promised to honor the privacy of birth parents and adoptees. That promise of privacy also was assured by law and affirmed by the State Superior Court. Those promises can no longer be kept. On May 27, 2014, a new law took effect that will allow adoptees and certain relatives to request and obtain the names of their biological parents beginning January 1, 2017.

Any birth parents who wish to preserve their privacy must submit a Redaction Request Form to the New Jersey Department of Health no later than December 31, 2016. By filing this form, birth parents will be able to keep their names off any documents provided by the State to adoptees or anyone else. The State made the Redaction Request Form public on August 3, 2015. The form can be downloaded at http://nj.gov/health/forms/reg-36c.pdf

TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Wisdom 7:7-11 This poem discusses how the spirit of wisdom is far more beautiful than any riches could be. All gold is no more than sand when compared to the importance of wisdom, which often leads people to the other good things in life.Second Reading: Hebrews 4:12-13God’s perception of people is called “sharper than any two-edged sword.” God is able to know the thoughts and feelings of all his people. We can hide nothing from him, and will need to account for all he has seen in us.Gospel: Mark 10:17-30A man asks Jesus how he can share in everlasting life. Jesus tells him to sell his possessions and travel with them. The man refuses and Jesus tells his disciples how difficult it is for a rich person to enter heaven if they are too concerned with their possessions. The disciples remind Jesus that they gave up everything for him, but he assures them they will be rewarded with everlasting life
