June 9, 2019 Pentecost Sunday

A Message from the Pastor

Dear parishioners, It’s Carnival time! The biggest annual event in Allendale is upon us, and

it happens here at Guardian Angel parish - June 11-15, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.!

I am excited about its arrival – aren’t you? Families and individuals from our community and neighboring towns love coming to spend evenings here. Great rides, games and food for young and old alike create such a sense of joy … and couldn’t we all use more of that?

The Carnival, under the leadership of Irene Nayden, involves many parishioners who volunteer in a variety of ways. We depend on you and are grateful to you! If you’ve never volunteered, please consider it – one even-ing of your time in a game booth or at our food court is not only a gift of your time to the parish, it’s also actually FUN and a great way to meet people.

Even if you can’t volunteer, and are not coming for rides or games, please come enjoy our amazing parish food court – bigger and better than ever before! I’m so grateful to Frank Paparozzi and our parish carnival food team, who have developed and expanded this part of our carnival over the past few years. Last year we added a new and quite popular feature: a beer/wine food court to provide a special place for adults to come and relax for the evening (even if you are not going on rides or playing games!).

And of course … don’t forget to support the parish carnival 50/50 raffle!

* This weekend at our 11:30 a.m. Mass we will offer a special blessing to our graduating high school seniors. This is always a special moment – they have grown in age, faith and wisdom among us, and now we send them out with a special blessing. Know that God is with you always!

* Recently, our parish held its open “pastoral council discernment” gathering, when everyone was invited to come for a meeting to pray and discuss about our parish, and consider who might begin three-year terms on the Council. We’re happy to welcome our new members, Carolyn Blake, Catherine Garbarini, Stephen Garbarini and Laurie Maimone. Thank you for offering your time and talent to help us reflect on the mission of our parish, and to fulfill it! And thank you to those who are complet-ing their three-year terms: Those serving their last year are Kathryn Bleckman, Susan Brown, Bill Konvit, and Maureen Morrissey.

In Christ,

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

Guardian Angel is a tithing parish. Biblical tithing means 10% of gross income to God. We ask half of this, or 5%, for your Parish Church. The collection for June 2nd will be reported in an upcoming bulletin, Did you know that June 21--the first day of summer--is National eGiving Day? Guardian Angel can take particular joy in this celebration, as the response to eGiving in our church has been wonderful. To build on this success, I am challenging you to put enve-lopes on a permanent summer vacation and set up an eGiving account with Faith Direct today. eGiving is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and Guardian Angel does not receive their envelopes. It’s easy for people to forget to catch up once they’re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result--making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries. The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National eGiving Day Challenge, the more con-sistent and predictable our offertory will be month after month--and this will help us do even more to spread Christ’s love throughout the community. Being part of this challenge is simple. Visit faith.direct/NJ513 Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as well as treasure!

Fr. Charlie

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The MINI-MISSION m&m® mini tubes were given out after mass June 1st & 2nd! As we prepare for our mission trip to Worcester, MA we could really use your prayers. Here’s your mission: Eat the minis and keep the tube. Then, continuing through this week offer a prayer for the mission team each day; when you finish each prayer, place 4 quarters in the tube. After this week, bring the tube with you to Mass and place it in the BIG TUB! I will need helpers at the carnival to make Slime putty at the Youth Group Slime Station! (Slime is a DIY toy that is made with simple ingredients) I am looking for newly confirmed teens to help out, so please let me know if you are available any of the nights of the carnival! We will pray for our graduating high school seniors, that their endeavors be guided by Christ and according to God’s will! Does your teen desire a deeper sense of purpose in life every week? Every day? Encourage them to stop by Youth Group this week (Wednesdays at 7:30 pm usually in the Red Barn)! We talk about our Catholicism, the Gospel, play board games, and occasionally video games too. What are you waiting for? It is so vital that we take the time to sit down with one another and talk about how we are all working to get to heaven!

Teens, ‘if you want to be happy, despise what Jesus despised on the cross; love what Jesus loved

on the cross.’

WEEKLY STEWARSHIP REFLECTION

June 9, 2019 Pentecost Sunday

“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” (JOHN 14:26)

The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate more on what we want than on what God wants for us. The relativism of our world tells us that we should be tolerant of all things, that there is no absolute truth. Pray to the Holy Spirit to transform our lives and to guide our thoughts, words and actions.

June 13th Thursday - The National Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, 674 Mt.View Rd. E., Asbury, NJ 08802. Celebrate Our Lady's apparitions at Fatima, and the 100th anniversary of the building of the Capelinha requested by Our Lady. Pray at the Holy House USA containing crushed stone from the Holy House of Loreto, the actual altar and baldacchino over which the last great vision of Fatima took place, and the largest extant piece of the tree upon which Our Lady stood at Fatima. 10:30 am-Confessions; 12:00 N.-Rosary Procession; 12:30 pm Speaker: David Carollo; 1:15 pm-Holy Mass-Celebrant: Rev. Ronan Murphy; Eucharistic Procession, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Fatima Farewell Procession. Talk at Holy House USA at 10:30 am and 3:30 pm; Talk at Capelinha at 3:30 pm. 908-689-1700, x224. www.bluearmy.com

Our June Graduates help us to reflect…

June is traditionally the time for graduation. Each graduate represents an accomplishment in academic achievement. For many people, however, providing the next meal is an “achievement” due to living in poverty. Would you be willing to clean out your closets and donate any unwanted clothing and shoes to the Catholic Charities donation bin located at the entrance to our small parking lot? The proceeds help Catholic Charities in their work with the poor. Thank you.

THIRD SATURDAY MASS

All are welcome to Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place Closter for the Third Saturday Mass on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 12:00PM. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only those individuals direct-ly affected with the abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict. A support group, Meeting of Hope will follow the mass. For information please call 201-768-7565.
