July 31, 2016 Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Dear parishioners, As many of you know, on July 12th I had laparoscopic surgery to remove prostate cancer. The surgery was successful, and I have been healing well. As my surgeon advised, I used July as a period of rest, recovery and recuperation. Now, with some restrictions on lifting and exercise, I will be ready to resume my presence and ministry among you in August. I hope you have enjoyed the service of the priests I have invited to assist at Mass during my convalescence. My spirits have been lifted by all the cards, food (and emails!) sent my way – and I am most especially grateful for your prayers. As I was being discharged, one of the nurses asked me to remember the hospital staff in prayer – and I hope we always do pray for them and all caregivers whenever we remember the sick and those facing surgery.

In Christ,

A Message from the Pastor

Giving Locally = Helping Locally

ATTENTION THOSE ENTERING 4TH AND 5TH GRADE:

DID YOU KNOW that YOU are now old enough to become an ALTAR

SERVER here at Guardian Angel parish?

Serving at weekend Mass is very special, and you have probably noticed we have many young people in this ministry – from 4th grade up through high school! It is an important re-sponsibility, and a wonderful way to serve God and the Church! And it really helps me and Father Don a lot! Altar servers assist the priest with the celebration of the liturgy. They carry the candles for the procession, hold the book (Roman Missal) for the priest and help with setting up the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. All altar servers receive training so that you will be ready. The alb (white robe) you will wear at Mass is provided by the parish, so there is no cost involved. We just ask that you exer-cise this ministry reverently: with prayer and care. There are two altar servers assigned at each Mass and servers are gener-ally scheduled to serve once or twice a month.

Training for new servers is coming soon! The coordinator of altar server ministry, Mr. Patrick Donahue will teach you about serving at weekend Mass. Please talk about this opportunity with your parents and have them contact Mr. Donahue soon. I really appreciate your service! Father Charlie

If you are interested or have any questions call Mr. Donahue at (201) 962-2119 or e-mail him at

SPECIAL CONFESSIONS TIMES AND VISITING PRIEST NEXT WEEKEND

As part our parish’s celebration of the “Year of Mercy,” next weekend we welcome to our parish Father John P. Fischer, who was specially-commissioned by Pope Francis as a “Missionary of Mercy.” Father Fischer, who has served as a member of the Comboni Missionaries and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, is affiliated with Cross Catholic Outreach and has a special devotion to serving the poor.

To help us prepare our hearts for the Lord, on Saturday August 6, Father Fischer will be hearing confessions at the special time of 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in our Reconciliation Room, which is located through the door to the right of the sanctuary. A “green light” over the door means the priest is present and you may enter the confessional either to use the kneeler behind the screen , or to walk past it and sit face-to-face with the priest. A “red light” over the door means another penitent is cur-rently in the confessional. Please leave the confessional door open when you finish.

I also hope you’ll plan to come to hear Father Fischer’s special preaching in this Year of Mercy at all our weekend Masses. I’ll be returning from my recupera-tion time and I look forward to seeing you!

Father Charlie

OUTREACH PRIEST - MISSIONARY OF MERCY Rev. John P. Fischer

To celebrate the JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Father John P. Fischer of Cross Catholic Outreach commissioned by Pope Francis in Rome as a Missionary of Mercy will be visiting our parish next weekend August 6-7. He will speak at all the Masses on behalf of the poor in

developing countries. What a blessed occasion to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

PARISH GARDEN HELPERS? Because of my surgery, I am temporarily restricted from doing some activities I would normally do while my body heals. One of those is weeding some of the parish gardens. We have one family who takes care of plantings and weeding around the church signs, but I could use volunteers for a few hours’ work – especially around the prayer garden and in front of the rectory. If you could spare a little time, I’d be happy to show you what needs to be done. And it would really be appreciated not just by me but by all those who visit and pray here. Thank you.

THE WORLD NEEDS LEADERS. Leading is more about learning specific skills than possessing inherent qualities. Come learn and practice skills that can make you a good leader: oral communication, collaborative skills, time management, leading discussions, group dynam-ics, Christ-like Leadership, and other important skills at the Capuchin Youth Leadership Training Retreat,

The Religious Education Office is preparing to close for the month of August. Schedules will be prepared and e mailed in the next few weeks. STEWARDSHIP BULLETIN REFLECTIONS

July 31, 2016 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” LUKE 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising contin-ually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle. _____________________________________________

REFLECTION FOR THE

18TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

A jar of honey lasts practically forever. The oldest jar of honey ever discovered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cherries and cucumbers so we won't waste a single one. We wouldn't feel that same urgency about honey.

In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe produce. Today's readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and always, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in every-thing they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company
