Words To Inspire The Faithful

Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring
your hand and put it into my side, and do not be
unbelieving, but believe." Jn 20:26b-27

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
understood what rising from the dead meant, which is not surprising. More concerning was it seems there was divisiveness among the disciples. Perhaps some of the debate from the Last Super about who would betray Jesus and the arguments concerning who was the greatest were continuing. The stress of seeing Jesus arrested, beaten, crucified, and die may have added to the discord. The first word attributed to Jesus that evening in the presence of the disciples was “peace”. He would go on to talk about “whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained”. These seem to be words Jesus would speak to a divided community.
The wonderful news is the disciples must have taken Jesus’ words to heart. We are told that Thomas was not present to hear these words. The disciples were all enthused at seeing the Lord now raised, and told Thomas the good news when he was finally with them. Thomas refused to accept their testimony. He rejected their excitement, formally went against their conviction, and did not believe their testimony. Often when one acts in such a way to a group of people, the individual would no longer be welcomed and be expelled from future gatherings. This was not the case with the disciples. They gave him no “either/or” ultimatum! Though Thomas persisted in going against their grasp of the situation, he was welcomed and allowed to stay.
There may have been division with Thomas and the rest of the disciples, but there was also humility, openness, and a willingness to take Jesus’ encouraging words of peace and forgiveness to heart. Neither the other disciples nor Thomas put themselves over and above the other. Because of this attitude Thomas was able to come by himself to a point where he too could believe.
Unity among the disciples would grow. We are told in the Acts of the Apostles this week that they would develop into such a tight group that this once divided band would grow to be “of one heart and mind”. They would care for one another with such great respect and love that they would share everything in common and no one would be in need. None of this would have been possible had the disciples and eventually the early church not taken to heart Jesus’ words of peace and forgiveness and began to live them.
This first Sunday after Easter is known as Divine Mercy Sunday. We celebrate the mercy Christ extends to us as demonstrated through his resurrection. The only way to fully comprehend this great mercy is to live lives that take to heart those first words of Jesus: “Peace” and “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained”. For those of us who may not be experiencing Easter joy, maybe it is not due to the weather. Could it be that we have not yet come in touch with Christ’s divine mercy?

As I write this I am looking out my window at the snow. It is coming down so hard that school was
cancelled today. Earlier I received a video card from some high school friends that featured tulips springing up from green grass. It would seem the only way we will soon see that is from a picture or video taken elsewhere.
It may look more like Christmas than Easter outside, and on Easter Sunday it was hard seeing so many people’s Easter dresses and suits sticking out from under winter coats. It is important that we not let the weather cover our Easter joy. But if we are struggling to find that joy, we are in good company. It seems all the disciples – not just Doubting Thomas – may have been struggling, though they too had heard the news that Jesus rose from the dead.
Our Gospel reading for this Sunday tells us that it was now evening. That morning, news had arrived that the tomb was empty. Peter, John, and some of the women saw the empty tomb. None of them

This is an organization founded by Katelyn and Shannon Baier of our parish and graduates of Saint Patrick School. Katelyn was diagnosed in 2008 with Crohns Disease, and has had three surgeries and countless procedures, most
of them at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital. Working with the Child Life Department at the hospital, her foundation now donates tie blankets to be given to children in difficult situations facing surgeries, procedures, or complicated tests.
We are looking for donations of fleece material for two upcoming event: 2 pieces of 1.5 yards (1 piece for each side of the blanket), OR you can donate money to go toward the purchase of fleece. Donations may be made out to “Saint Patrick”. On Sunday, April 8, in the church Social Hall from 9:45 AM – 2:00 PM, the I GOT TIME

LOOKING AT ADDICTION
On March 18 the Social Concerns Committee hosted a Coffee Talk on addiction. Peter VanDusartz spoke, giving an amazing and informative presentation. Peter, among other things, coordinates the mental health and addiction programs for Hudson Hospital. He framed the issues of addiction in a way that gave attendees new eyes when looking at this problem. And he certainly invited us to pause before we rush to conclusions. The Knights of Columbus will be conducting their annual “Tootsie Roll” Drive next weekend for the benefit of people with intellectual disabilities. They will be available at the back of church after each Mass next weekend to accept your generous donation for this cause. Through your generous donations last year, we were able to contribute nearly $4000 to programs for people with intellectual disabilities in our community. Look for the yellow vest.

The Diocese of Superior is pleased to announce that the applications are now being accepted for the Sister Kathleen
Agnes Brady Trust Scholarship. This perpetual trust offers partial tuition scholarships to children enrolled in kindergarten through grade eight in the Catholic schools of this diocese. Families must be active, registered, contributing members of a parish in the Diocese of Superior. All scholarship grants are awarded based on need as documented in the application process.
Interested families should contact the principal of your Catholic school for an application form and complete application instructions. All applications must be returned to your Catholic school principal by June 1, 2018.
