November 3, 2019 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear parishioners, As you can see in this bulletin, we can now announce who the new priest coming to Guardian Angel parish is – Father Robert Salm, currently a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel church in Ridgewood. I am very pleased that Cardinal Tobin has chosen Father Salm as your new spiritual leader. As the Vicar for Clergy, this was my first recommendation to the Cardinal, after consultation with my advisory board! In upcoming bulletins, you’ll have a chance to learn more about him. I trust he will be a wonderful fit with our parish community and staff. I am so grateful to our parish staff and Pastoral Council for the wonderful Farewell reception they hosted for me last Sunday. Everything was great, and I enjoyed visiting with you (and am sorry I couldn’t spend even more time talking to each of you!) I am also deeply moved by my memories of the Mass – the great planning, preparation and serving by our music ministry and other liturgical ministers made this truly a joyful, Christ-centered experience. To witness a church full of people praying and singing as we praised our God together – that is how it should be, and encouraged me in my own faith as well. Now, each evening, I am opening a few of the cards – and moved by your kind wishes and shar-ing of memories. God is truly present in our midst, and even as we part I know God will continue to do tremendous things in our lives if we open our hearts to Him and seek His will above all else. I will be here on a limited basis during November, until leaving November 30th. My final Mass with you will be the 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. My new address is: St. Thomas the Apostle, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield, NJ 07003, with my new email: [email protected]. In Christ,

A Message from the Pastor Priesthood by Fr. Steve Ryan, SDB

November is “clergy appreciation” month. The first Sunday in November is Priesthood Sunday. Some of you might think, “So what?”, and you’re right, it’s not that big of a deal. However, it is an opportunity to think about priesthood in the Catholic Church. There have been a lot of eyebrows raised regarding Catholic priests in today’s world. Priests have lost some respect due to scandal and sexual abuse accusations from generations past. Priests now have work to do to gain credibility back. The best way to work on public relations is for priests to be sincere. Strong. Kind. Totally authen-tic. To be – basically holy. What do you think about the priesthood? It’s a question people ask of me and it’s a question that I have to ask myself regularly.

In fact, as a priest, I think a lot of things about the priesthood:

• It’s an honor to stand with Christ and share in his apostolic mission for the world as an ordained minister.

• It’s a humbling and amazing experience to be at the altar and celebrate Holy Mass and bring Christ’s saving love in the Eucharist into the lives of people.

• It’s a joy to be the instrument of healing and forgiveness in the sacrament of Confession.

• It’s a huge responsibility for a priest to be an evangelical witness who is a father, a guide, a friend and a mentor for people.

• It’s amazing how many people love their priests and are praying for them and supporting them.

• It can be lonely without a family of your own but on the other hand you get to have a ton of people in your life and you really do feel a part of many families.

• It is so important for a priest to love the Church.

• Priests who have a strong relationship with the Blessed Mother have something important. Mary really helps priests out. She sup plies a lot of support.

• It’s a joy to serve and there are ample ways to do that as a priest – all day every day.

• A priest needs to pray daily to survive.

• The devil tries to destroy people who strive for holiness and the devil definitely has it out for priests. He tries real hard to mess them up.

• Pride and anger are buggers for men, and priests are no exception. • Chastity is a beautiful virtue – it is also takes discipline, prayer and

attentiveness. When St. John Bosco (Don John Bosco) finished his seminary training and was ordained on June 5, 1841, he received from his mother a little personal speech. The words she chose were not the warmest of congratulations. She felt it was necessary to caution him rather than coddle him. She gave him the best piece of advice any priest could have been given. His mother, Mama Margaret, said to her son – something like this: Now that your ordained – you better keep your head on straight. To be a priest means to sacrifice. If you want to do this right – learn to put others first and give until it hurts. Son, to be a priest means to begin to suffer – you will suffer misunderstanding, prejudice, and you will suffer like Christ to whom you are conforming your life. Priesthood is about giving your life away. Mama Margaret also told him to remember where he came from and to remember why he became a priest. She told him to always care for the poor, especially the young who were most in need. Finally, she said to him, “If you ever become an arrogant, selfish priest, I’ll be gravely disappointed in you. In order to get new recruits who really will prevent the ordained priesthood from becoming extinct, I beg you to pray for priests. Besides the grace of the Holy Spirit (which is always first), priests themselves have to be hardworking, joyful, prayerful, balanced and good at social relationships. Most of all, as Mama Margaret said, priests have to be in it to give their lives away and not for some kind of status or personal gain. They have to be able to sacrifice, or it doesn’t work. Are there men out there capable of this? Yes. I’m seeing them. The Salesian pre-novices I had dinner with the other night at Don Bosco Prep are sacrificial, prayerful and joyful. The four Salesian clerics who took perpetual vows two months ago up here at the Marian Shrine are like that. There’s hope. Keep praying. Say one for me especially.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the warm welcome you gave our son, Charlie, 16 years ago when he came to your parish. We would also like to thank you for the warm wel-come you have always given us when we have visited your church and parish events over the years. There will always be a warm spot in our hearts and prayers for you.

Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time November 3, 2019

But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.’” LUKE 19:8

This means everyone isn’t called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal sacrifice. No amount is too small or insignificant! TOUGH LOVE The first reading tells us that the God of all the universe is a merciful God who loves all creatures, not just enough to keep them in existence, but enough to give sinners the chance to repent. At times when I am behind a slow driver and want to arm the photon torpedoes if he doesn't move over, I remember that only God, who made all things, has the right to punish our transgressions. Instead, God gives us warnings and reminders to lead us to repentance. Warnings are found in God's word, in the scriptures, and in Jesus. In the Hebrew scriptures, we see many warnings about sin and unfaithfulness. Besides the Ten Command-ments, we also have the books of the law. While Christians no longer follow the laws of kosher, those laws can be warn-ings that even the smallest of sins need to be repented. White lies, for example, are usually told to keep from hurting someone's feelings. When we get used to telling white lies, however, we can be inclined to tell other lies, such as those told to protect ourselves. Those lies not only make it harder for people to trust us, they also keep us from facing our faults and taking responsibility for our actions. Jesus also warns us about sin, both in his teaching and when he forgives sinners. In John 8:1-11, he saves the wom-an caught in adultery from stoning but tells her to sin no more. In today's Gospel Jesus has dinner with the tax collector, who demonstrates his repentance by offering to repay those he has extorted. Jesus tells Zachaeus and the bystanders that he came to save the lost. But part of being saved is the inten-tion not to get lost again. And what about "reminders"-- the results of sin that usu-ally catch up with us? The sin of arrogance can lead a driver to think he can ignore the speed limit. But when he has to pay a speeding ticket, that is the reminder that his arrogance, not the speeding, was a sin. Most sins have consequences, rang-ing from a guilty conscience to a jail sentence or worse. If we ignore those reminders, we may suffer eternal consequences. If we think of the results of sin as God's "tough love," perhaps they will remind us to sin no more. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
