April 21, 2019 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

A Message from the Pastor

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Alleluia! Alleluia! Those words ring out again! To parishioners and visitors alike we offer a warm welcome and prayers for a faith-filled Easter Season! What joy and hope we Christians have to celebrate the great feast of Easter: Jesus Christ is the true victor, the Risen Savior! His suffering, death and resurrection are reminders to us that even in our own lives, suffering and death do not have the last word … for we have been baptized into the death AND resurrection of Jesus Christ!

What did you experience during Lent? Surely that shapes the way you now celebrate Easter. Fasting, prayer, almsgiving, are all meant to purify our hearts and draw us closer to the Lord and one another – to create a kind of emptiness within us that prepares a space to be filled with Easter joy and hope.

Did you know that the church refers to every Sunday as a “little Easter?” It is the day the Lord rose – and that is why every Sunday is a Holy Day of obliga-tion. Christians have always held Sunday to be sacred, and Sunday Mass remains the heart of our faith. Our willing obedience to the Lord’s command: “do this in remembrance of me” sustains us in Word and Sacra-ment and strengthens us in the bonds of community and Christian charity.

We are deeply grateful to those in our liturgical ministries, and everyone whose work is “behind the scenes.” Thank you to all who make the experience of Guardian Angel parish vibrant and alive now and all year long!

As the Easter Season begins I think especially of the children who will be receiving Eucharist for the first time here at Sunday Masses in the coming weeks. I hope we will look forward to participating at these Masses with them, sharing joy and faith by our pres-ence and enthusiasm. And let us help their families re-member that they have been preparing not simply for “First Communion,” but rather for every Sunday! En-tering the Easter Season also calls us to pray especially for our teenagers who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation here on May 19th at 2 p.m. May they re-ceive and share the gifts of the Holy Spirit abundantly and with enthusiasm! May the Spirit stir their hearts to deeper participation in the sacramental life of the Church!

* The greenery and blossoms make winter seem a distant memory. But once again winter storms caused havoc with our snow removal budget. You may not realize that with every winter storm we have two parking lots, as well as parish driveways and street

sidewalks that must be quickly cleared. And often, salting and a second plowing is required. For safety reason, everything must be ready – we can’t wait for it to melt. We have also needed to have a bit of electrical and HVAC work done on the Church and Auditorium – all to make the facilities up-to-date and attractive for worship and activities. If you would like to support your parish with these expenses, any donation is help-ful. Please be sure to write “grounds and maintenance” on the memo line of your check, so that it goes for this purpose alone (and is not taxed by the archdiocese as “ordinary income).” Thank you!

In Christ,

ARE YOU A GOLFER? We would like to resume having an annual parish golf outing – it’s lots of fun and a helpful fundraiser for the parish! If you are interested in helping us get started, please contact Father Charlie. Thank you!

A WONDERFUL LENTEN EXPERIENCE

The Lenten series on The Real Presence which ended last week , inspired all the participants who took advantage of this special opportunity to rekindle their understanding and devo-tion to receiving Jesus' body and blood in the Eucharist. The series produced by the Augustine Institute, covered the biblical foundation of our Catholic belief in the real presence we re-ceive each time we receive communion at mass. Testimony on how much this bread for the journey supports us through life and the coming of heaven to earth, joined by the communion of saints at the altar was very moving. If you were not present and missed this opportunity, I encourage you to gather as fami-lies, ministers of communion, other ministries and see one or more of the videos. For information and borrowing the films, contact ccblake38@ gmail.com or Lori in the office. The videos can be borrowed from the CCD office. Your reception of communion will never be the same after seeing these videos. Receiving communion is the sum and substance of our Catholic faith. We are a Eucharistic people. A huge THANK YOU to Bill Konvit and Irene Nayden who gave their time and expertise to handling the technology that kept the videos running. We en-joyed good conversation following the video and thank all the participants. Carolyn Blake

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Guardian Angel is a tithing parish. Biblical tithing means 10% of gross income to God. We ask half of this, or 5%, for your Parish Church. The April 7th collection was $9,027 with $5,416 from the collection basket and $3,611 from Faith Direct.

The Lord is risen! As Christ's disciples, we are called to go forth and spread the good news of His Resurrection. Our parish's many ministries are examples of how many of you answer that call. Our ministries require not only gifts of time and talent, but also of financial help. Please prayerfully consider supporting Guardian Angel with electronic donations through Faith Direct. Signing up is easy! Visit faithdirect/NJ513. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family!

• You will get a great deal of satisfaction (and a free limited-edition t-shirt!) for your volunteering efforts. Contact Irene Nayden (201-327-0352) or [email protected] if you want to help. Let us know if you can help out on any of the nights and if you have a preference for where you work, 1) Games, 2) Food, 3) Set up or clean up.

We will continue our “Food Court Sponsor” program to help offset some of the initial costs associated with the carnival. Families are invited to make a $100 donation to purchase a lawn sign in the Carnival Food Court. Signs will read:

During Holy Week this year many of our families partici-pated in events throughout the week. On Holy Thursday several families participated in the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Some of the children had their feet washed at Mass and joined in the procession to the chapel for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Good Friday is always an exceptional day as all the churches of Allendale join together at 12:00 noon to pray the Stations of the Cross together. Many families with children attended and found the experience to be very moving.

This spring we are proud and thankful to have 32 chil-dren prepared to receive Eucharist for the first time. The dates and times for these celebrations are: Saturday April 27 at 5:30 Sunday April 28 at 11:30 and Sunday May 5 at 11:30. Please join us at these Masses.

On Monday May 6th the First Eucharist class will lead a May Crowning ceremony and an Outdoor Rosary at 7:30 PM. This event will take place in the rectory prayer gar-den. I urge you to attend this very special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Operation Rice Bowl ENCOUNTER THE RISEN CHRIST

We prayed, fasted and gave alms – and now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl challenges us as we encounter our risen Lord to bring the hope of Resurrection to a world in need. Visit www.orb.crs.org for more information on the good work of Catholic Relief Services. If you did not being your rice bowl this weekend, please remember to bring it next weekend. Bring it to Mass and deposit it in the display located in the vestibule as you enter church.
