WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDERING FOSTERING

Rutland County Council’s fostering team are urging people in Rutland who have considered fostering and would like to know more to come forward and register their interest. Rutland foster carers provide care for local children and young people while the child’s own parents are either unable to look after them or need a break to recharge their batteries. Foster carers can help a child through a time of crisis, with the aim of helping them return to their own family, move onto adoption, or life as an independent young adult.

Whether they are taking care of a child for just a few days or a longer period of time Rutland foster carers make a real difference to that child’s life and a significant contribution to our community.

Residents who are interested in fostering can register their interest online at www.rutland.gov.uk/fostering or by calling 01572 722 577 and asking to speak to one of the foster care team.

STAPLEFORD PARK HELPS TO RAISE

FUNDS FOR SUE RYDER

Stapleford Park recently hosted a special White Tie and Tiara Ball to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder, a national health and social care charity. A silent auction was held during the evening organised by Stapleford Park, which helped to raise over £8,000.

All money raised from the event is vital funds that will help Sue Ryder continue to provide quality care for people living with end of life and long-term conditions including; Cancer, Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Huntington’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease.

Zak Welch, Head of Sales at Stapleford Park said, “We chose to support Sue Ryder as they do magnificent work for people with so many conditions. Everybody will know somebody who has been effected by a condition the charity cares for and will be able to make a connection to the cause”

For further information on how you can support Sue Ryder call the team on 0845 050 1953. For more information on Sue Ryder visit www.sueryder.org

The Reserve occupies shore line and shallow water lagoons

along 9 miles of the western end of Rutland Water Reservoir

Back to basicsHEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

Mark Gordon

www.fitness2health.co.uk

Facebook: Mark FitnessTrainer

With our busy lives, the lead up to Christmas and the excesses that come with the festivities, the New Year is always seen as a time to start again. This is just as true for our health, fitness and nutrition. Going back to basics is simple, but something we can all forget about.

Exercise } Start slowly • TryahomeDVDworkout, includingalittleresistance. You can build up the resistance as you become stronger.• Useobjectsinthehomeasfreeweightssuchasbottles of water and tins.• Yourcoremusclesaresoimportant, notjustinexercise but also in your day to day health and wellbeing. Coupled with this is posture. Take a check a few times everyday to see how your posture is, whether you’re sitting or standing. • Asimplepieceofhomeexerciseequipmentisagym ball. By using the ball with exercises that require balance, you are engaging more muscles in your workout which means it will be more effective overall. • Littleandoften.Agood20minuteworkout4–5 times a week is more realistic and effective.

Detox There are questions over whether detoxing is effective or beneficial. Our bodies are designed to clean out waste, but as modern diets quite often include processed ingredients and ‘junk’ foods, our bodies have to work so much harder. By maintaining a balanced lifestyle yourself, you shouldn’t feel the need to actively detox. Check the ingredients in the detox solutions available.

Food } Cutting back the simple way• Nevereatanydietfoodproduct.Thesefoodsarefull of chemicals that our body cannot process and are almost certainly lacking in nutrients.• Avoidallstarchycarbohydrates, whitebread, white rice, pasta, cakes and biscuits. These are packed full of sugar and will give you an energy rush followed by a sudden fall in energy levels.• Avoidprocessedfoodsandsauces.Thesecontain high levels of sugar, salt and additives.• Tryhavingatreatdayevery3-4days,butthat doesn’t mean the whole day! • Drinkplentyofwaterandcutbackonsoftdrinks, alcohol, coffee and tea. This will help your digestive system, pick up your energy levels, aid water retention and give your skin a healthy glow.• Stockuponleanproteinliketrimmedmeat, eggs and nuts. Protein fills you up for longer and plays a vital part in muscle formation. Perfect if you are trying to loose weight and gain muscle tone.

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

In the grips of winter the garden can seem a most forbidding place, but with a keen eye we can see the garden start to stir. Snowdrops and Aconites reaching skywards, Hellebore buds swelling ready to burst, the sweet scent of Which Hazel and Christmas box - earth to turn, beds to mulch, plenty to do and keep us warm.

Happy New Year and happy gardening for 2012!

Garden skills- Tree plantingI think there is nothing more satisfying and soothing for the soul than planting a tree. From the giant English Oak to the dainty Mountain Ash, to watch a tree you planted grow, mature and thrive is just a magical experience. But as when sowing seeds it’s vital to give your tree the best start in life so correct planting is vital.

1. Theplantinghole-squareshallowhole.Unlessthesoilisparticularly impoverished don’t add any additional organic matter to the hole as this will help to create a sump for water to drain into which will cause root damage and encourage water borne infections.2. Planting depth; This is vital, the trunk flares out towards its base just above where the roots are found, this is the depth to plant bringing the soil level just above the roots so as not to cover the root flare. Check that the tree is straight. 3. After care; Add a handful of blood, fish and bone in spring. 4. Staking; A stake is only there to hold the root ball in the ground until its roots grow out, a healthy tree that is enjoying its situation should only need a stake for 1½ - 2 years.

Five great garden trees1. Malus ‘Golden Hornet’2. Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’3. Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’4. Acer griseum5. Betula utilis var.jacquemontii

IS IT TIME TO HAVE YOUR CHIMNEY SWEPT?

More and more people are returning to the use of

open fires, or having stoves or heaters fitted, for

economic, environmental or aesthetic reasons. If

you have one of these, you must understand the

importance of having your chimney swept. This year,

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service recorded an

increase in chimney fires across their area - they

were called out to more than 100 chimney fires!

Chimney sweeping helps in the prevention of chimney fires and reduces the risk of dangerous fume emissions, notably carbon monoxide. Clean chimneys and appliances are safer and work more efficiently; this will also help the environment by assisting the complete combustion of the fuel. Having your chimney swept also eliminates the build up of soot and clears obstructions such as nests.

Martin James

A chimney should be cleaned at least once a year, and possibly more often depending on how often a fire is lit and what fuel is being used. All types of chimney that are in use, even where a modern wood-burner is fitted, need regular cleaning.

Martin James, your local chimney sweep was first taught by his father more than 40 years ago and he has also received formal training in dealing with different types of flues and appliances.

EbooksThe Scene guide to buying an Ebook readerYou may think that the screens on Ebook readers make your eyes

strain, but this problem has been solved by the use of a display

called ‘e-ink’. They don’t use a back light, which is what typically

leads to eye strain. Ebook readers have also been developed now

to give you sufficient battery life for between 7,000 and 8,000 page

turns – plenty to keep you busy!

Ebook readers can store a significant number of books, possibly

several hundred with 512mb of storage. Some Ebook readers

also come with memory card slots if you are looking at adding a

significant number of books to your collection.

Some readers can also store audio books, so if this is of interest to

you check the capabilities before buying. Audio books do require

more memory though.

The functionality of Ebook readers can vary with some having

touch-screen and stylus input, whilst others have QWERTY

keyboards.

Students may want to consider a reader which allows notes to be

made or highlighted.

Finally the size of the reader needs to be considered – do you

want it to fit in your pocket or handbag, or would a larger screen

be beneficial.

We have all heard the slogan ‘A dog is for life, not just for Christmas’. This campaign was created by the Dogs Trust in 1978 but is an ongoing concept not just for dogs, but all pets.Thereareabout24millionownedpetsintheUK,amajority of which are cats and dogs and there are also at least 200,000 unwanted pets needing new homes.

The following considerations should be taken into account when taking on a pet:

• CanImakealifelongcommitmenttothispet?• Ismyhomebigenoughandsecureenough?• DoIhavetimeforsocialisingandtraining?• Wouldmyworkhoursleadtoneglectingmypet?• What type of household environment is suited tomy pet, eg. children, families, other pets.

So when thinking about whether you would like to give an animal as a gift for Christmas please make sure you are able to give it all it needs and deserves, and don’t let it become one of the thousands of unwanted pets.

IS YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER?1ST CLASS TYRES & AUTOCARE... BE SAFE THIS WINTER

Afteraweekofsnowand iceonUKroads last January, peoplefinallystarting to take winter tyres seriously. A legal requirement in most of NorthernEurope.WintertyresareverymisunderstoodintheUK.Hereare some reasons you might want to consider swapping to winter tyres.

In icy conditions, from just 10mph a winter tyre stops an average vehicle 7 meters shorter than asummer tyre! Imagine the difference from 30 mph! The number of accidents caused by wet conditions increases in winter by 267%. Give yourself a chance of avoiding someone else’s incident by fitting winter tyres.

It’s no secret modern cars have gained a littleweight,infactaMK5Golfisalmosttwice the weight of a MK1 Golf. With all that extra weight comes added inertia when trying to change directions or slow down, which gives the tyres much more work to do.

SHOULD GET TWO WINTERS OUT OF YOUR WINTER TYRES.

One of the most common misconceptions with winter tyres are that they are not needed in theUK,becausewedon’t getenough snow. Winter tyres are designed to be more effective than regular tyres in any temperature under 7c, on any type of road.

Cold weather tyres are designed with more natural rubber and silica in the compound, which means they do not harden up in freezing weather, where summer tyres shall. The chances are, if your car windows are frozen in the morning, so are yournormaltyres. Itcantakearound15miles of driving for summer tyres to warm up in winter conditions.
