Where and When

Page 4: Digital Rutland

Excluded areas - and why

Digital Rutland is funded with public funding and national grants and the conditions of this funding state that the project must not cover areas where a service already exists or is planned within the next three years.

Rutland County Council does not necessarily agree with these decisions, and have repeatedly challenged these decision making processes, but unfortunately our hands are tied.

These rules are not specific to Rutland. For instance, Parts of Grantham and Melton Mowbray are within Virgin Media areas, which therefore means that public funding cannot be used in these areas.

What can we do if our area is excludedIn terms of what can be done for the areas that are excluded from the Digital Rutland project, we would suggest that they follow these steps.1. Contact their respective Internet Service Provider (ISP) to see

what can be done commercially. 2. Register their interest in Superfast (fibre) Broadband with their

ISP’s. If sufficient demand can be obtained, then it could potentially be covered commercially.

3. Speak to various operators to see if there is an opportunity to bring these services to the areas.

4. Contact the Office of Communications (Ofcom) who have the powers to apply pressure on operators to improve their services.
