Welcome to Rutland Electric Fencing! Though the county of Rutland may be the smallest in England, Rutland Electric Fencing Co., Ltd. and its Electric Shepherd® brand of energisers and accessories, is the largest manufacturer of electric fencing in the United Kingdom. We take great pride in the range and quality of the products we design and manufacture, and place great value on our close working relationship with our customers.

This catalogue includes our full range of products together with details of their most suitable application. For additional information see our specialised brochures. What animal is to be fenced?

For horses, high visibility conductors are recommended such as tape or rope. Slow moving cattle or sheep can be contained with poly wire or steel wire. Nocturnal, feral animals and wildlife will need a physically strong construction as they will not see most wires and simply run into the fence and knock it over in the dark.

What type of fence? If you wish to move the fence regularly, always buy lightweight portable products such as plastic posts, poly wire & tape, reels and battery powered energisers. When a permanent fence is necessary, use wooden posts with high quality insulators, or our self insulating Electro-Wood. High tensile wire is ideal for farm livestock but Electro-Rope and Electro-Tape can be used with special insulators for horses.

Which energiser? This depends on the length of the fence, amount of vegetation likely to grow on the conductors, type of fence-line material used, animals to be controlled and whether a local 230v power source is available. See the back page of this brochure for full performance details and energiser selection criteria.

Mains Powered Energisers – Where possible, always use a mains-powered energiser sited inside a building. Running costs

are low (unlikely to exceed £20.00pa) but best of all, no batteries to go flat and less likely to be damaged by animals.

Dry Battery Powered Energisers using 6v and 9v batteries – If the fence is to be moved daily, use an energiser with an internal battery

such as ESB15, ESB25, ESB115, ESB120, ESB125, ESB135, ESB145, and ESB150. These are lightweight and easy to relocate, require no maintenance and generally the batteries last 1 – 6 months before replacement is needed. These batteries are not rechargeable.

12 Volt Wet Battery Energisers – If the fence is moved infrequently or is semi-permanent and no mains power is available, then select

a 12v energiser together with a 12v 75 Ampere Hour (Ah) leisure battery (22-107). The higher the Ah., the longer the period between recharges. Generally these energisers are more powerful than dry battery versions and can operate longer fences.

Other Key ComponentsPosts – Posts provide the backbone of your fence system. Line posts support the fence wire and keep it evenly spaced. Corner posts (generally wood) must be set deeper than line posts to withstand the strain of supporting the fence line. Temporary or portable posts are generally smaller and lighter.

Fence Wire – The electric fence wire conducts electricity around the enclosure. Wire types include smooth steel wire, high tensile wire, poly wire (stainless steel wire strands woven with polyethylene) poly tape and poly rope. Your selection will depend on the type of fence, the species of animal you are containing and how long the fence will stay in place.

Insulators – Insulators prevent electrical shorts between the electrified wire and the fence posts. Good-quality insulators are critical for a properly functioning fence. Insulators are most commonly plastic.

High Tensile Fence System – A high tensile fence system requires many unique components and is ideal for permanent installation particularly for very long farm fences. Although not right for every type of animal or enclosure, a high tensile fence is affordable, attractive, easy to maintain and long lasting (20-40 years).

Accessories – Fence system tools like voltage testers help keep your fence in good working condition, while lightning diverters can help protect your energiser.

Plan Your Layout It helps to plan your fence layout in advance and choose the various components you’ll need to complete the installa-tion. Using pencil and a sheet of graph paper, sketch out the area you wish to enclose, noting distances. Then draw in the approximate locations of buildings or barns that will be adja-cent to or enclosed by the fence. Also include in your plan:

n Location of water supplies and feeding stations

n Trees or other obstacles

n Low – or wet spots

n Entrance/exit points where gates are needed — note the length of gates

n Fence termination points (e.g., corners and gateways)

n Location of fence energiser and electrical source (if applicable)

n Cross fences within the pasture area (temporary or permanent)

Choose Your System’s Components and Complete the ChecklistWhen your sketch is complete you’re ready to select compo-nents for your system. Refer to this guide for more detailed product information and tables that will help you calculate the number of each component you’ll need.

FENCE ENERGISER TERmINOLOGy

Volts – This is the pressure behind the flow of electricity to push the energy along the conductive fence wire . (similar to air pressure) Most energisers produce up to 10,000 volts and about 3,000 volts minimum (measured by a volt meter, 14-171), is needed at the end of the fence .

Ohms – This is the measure of resistance, rather like friction of water running along a hosepipe . Small diameter fence conductors, such as those in poly wires and tape have high resistance and are used for short fences . Large diameter wire such as 2 .5mm high tensile have low resistance and can be many kilometres long . Vegetation growth on a fence line acts like a leak in a water pipe and "shorts" the fence to earth thus reducing its effectiveness .

Joules – This is the amount of energy available to be pushed down the conductor by the energiser, and is the measure of shock felt by the animal . This is rather like cubic capacity or volume . Higher joules mean longer fences (see back page for the joules stored in each energiser) .

Amperage – the measurement of electric current; what you feel when you get shocked . The higher the amperage the more intense shock the animal will feel .

SPECIES CONSIDERATIONS Minimum recommended Characteristics/Animal voltage on fence line* Recommendations

Horses 3,000 volts Use high visibility products such

as poly tape or poly rope

Cattle 3,000 volts If docile with plenty of pasture,

1-3 strands adequate

Bulls 4,000 volts Extra shock needed to control a

determined bull, 4 strands

recommended

Sheep/Goats 3,000–5,000 volts Difficult to confine (goats jump,

thick coats require higher

voltage), 4-6 strands

Nuisance pests 3,000 volts Smaller animals require closer

and vermin wire spacing

Pigs 3,000 volts To deter from rooting, use

3-4 wires starting 15cm from

ground

Foxes/Predators 4,000–5,000 volts Multi-wires spaced 13-20cm apart

from ground level

Deer 3,000–4,000 volts Multi-wire fence 1.8-2.5m high

using high visibility tape or rope

Pets 2,000–3,000 volts 3-4 wires, starting 15cm from

ground

*Rutland Electric Fencing Company’s voltage testers (page 14) can help you determine if you have adequate voltage on your fence line .

*Battery life and recharge times are based on using batteries supplied by Rutland Electric Fencing. In practice rechargeable batteries should never be run flat. The battery life quoted assumes only 75% of the fully charged capacity is used before recharging takes place. When used in economy mode the life expectancy can increase by up to 30%.**Where more than one electric net is being used they should be powered from the middle of the run and at least a one metre galvanised earth stake used.***Distance of fence wire which can be energised is based on using multi-wire electric fencing constructed with 2.5mm dia. high tensile galvanised wire. Use the ‘average vegetation’ figures when calculating distatance for poly wires and tapes as poly wires and tapes are less conductive than high tensile wire.

Hardwood electric fencing from a renewable source. One of the most economical ways of producing a permanent, stock proof fence for sheep, pigs or cattle. Utilizes rust-free attachment clips to attach galvanised wire to fence post. *No need for insulators.

Note: The spacing of the droppers is dependent on how level the ground is . Tie downs should be used on undulating ground and through ditches .

*May require insulators on very long runs of fencing .

EARTHING

In order for the fence to work correctly it is necessary to make an adequate Earth. The shock circuit is then completed when an

animal comes into contact with the fence. If an insufficient earth is used then the whole system becomes inefficient or ineffective.

You will only get the full potential from your Rutland Electric Shepherd energiser if it is correctly earthed. Depending on the

energiser, we suggest you use a minimum one metre (Part No. 18-179B) or two metre (Part No. 18-179M) galvanised earth stake. In

dry ground conditions the current flows less easily than in wet conditions and may require the use of additional earth stakes.

Additional earth stakes should be spaced two metres apart and joined with lead out cable (Part No. 17-128).

HOW TO TEST YOUR FENCE

At the furthest end of the fence line

from the energiser, measure the

voltage with an Electric Fence Volt

Meter. We recommend using the

Digital Electric Fence Tester (Part No.

14-172). See page 14 for additional

testers. A good fence line should

have 3,000 volts or more. If a lower

value is read then it must be

improved or the stock will not get a

high enough shock and learn to

respect the fence.

HOW TO TEST THE EARTH

Short the electric fence to earth using a metal bar or wire, at

least 100 metres from the earth stakes. Connect one lead of

the voltmeter to the top of the earth stake. Push the other

lead/probe into the ground as far away as possible from the

earth stake. If the reading is more than 400 or 500 Volts then

the earth needs to be improved. Add extra earth stakes at least

2 metres apart and connect with lead out cable. Then re-check

the voltage. Finally, remove the short from the fence.

FENCE GATES

To transfer power from one side of a fixed gate to the other use

our Under Gate Cable. Temporary gates should be wired in the

same way. You should not rely on the contact between the gate

hook and insulator to supply power to the rest of the fence.

*Battery life and recharge times are based on using batteries supplied by Rutland Electric Fencing. In practice rechargeable batteries should never be run flat. The battery life quoted assumes only 75% of the fully charged capacity is used before recharging takes place. When used in Economy mode the life expectancy can increase by up to 30%. **Cost based on average domestic UK unit cost per annum. ***Where more than one Electric Net is being used they should be powered from the middle of the run and at least a one metre galvanised earth stake used. Mains energisers can be used to power electric nets, however to comply with health & safety requirements the energiser must be mounted indoors with a lead out cable going to the nets. We do not recommend using energisers over four (4) Joules on nets. ****Distance of fence wire which can be energised is based on using multi-wire Electric Fencing constructed with 2.5mm dia. High Tensile galvanised wire. Use the ‘average vegetation’ figures when calculating distatance for poly wires and tapes as poly wires and tapes are less conductive than high tensile wire.
