Part IIThe article The Devastation by Michael Specter

appeared in the New Yorker and describes a drastically worsening HIV/AIDS epidemic in Russia.

The article cites health statistics from various

sources.  The author notes that "official" statistics can in some cases be misleading, such as the drop in the number of HIV infections reported last year by Russia's Federal AIDS Center (p. 62).

In the following slides you are asked to answer 5 questions regarding global health statistics.

Page 4: Russia and AIDS: The Real Picture

There are FIVE questions in this assignment. Answer the questions on paper and turn in the

assignment in class on the due date.

1. Use the tables on the next slides to create a graph of the trends in life expectancy for the United States, Russia, India, Brazil, and Uganda from the years1950 - 2005.

2. Use the tables on the next slides to create a graph comparing the literacy rate in each country (except for the US) to the life expectancy in 1970, 1985, and 2000.

3. Use the tables on the next slides to create a graph that compares reported AIDS cases versus time in each country.

Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years that a newborn baby is expected to live if the age-specific mortality rates effective at the year of birth apply throughout his or her lifetime. The projections reported here assume medium fertility (the "medium-fertility assumption" of the United Nations Population Division).

4. Look at the world maps on the following slides that track reported AIDS cases from 1979 till 2001 across the globe. According to these data, in which continent are the largest numbers of AIDS cases reported? Do you think the world maps data give an accurate picture of the true numbers of person with AIDS in each country? Why or why not?

5. Consider the population growth rate and population natural increase for the Russian Federation and USA. Does this data raise any questions in your mind?

Population Growth is the average annual percent change in mid-year population for a country or region in the indicated period. Percent changes in population are calculated using the exponential growth rate equation, which assumes continuous, exponential growth over time. The projections reported here assume medium fertility (the "medium-fertility assumption" of the United Nations Population Division).
