Page 2: Rock music genre analysis

• Rock music is a genre that started in the 1950’s. • It originally began as a type of music that branched from

other musical genre’s such as ‘rhythm and blues’, and ‘Jazz’ . • For years its music was influenced by the music genre’s that

it evolved from, but over the years has gained its own independence and is now is singularly know music genre and has its own style of music. This is mainly because of the artists that have made songs under the rock music genre. Rock artists usually work in groups called bands.

• A typical rock band consists of a bass guitarist, electric guitarist, drummer and the lead singer. As rock grew largely, it began to have subgenre’s, starting in 1970, such as ‘Heavy metal’, ‘New wave’ and in the 1990’s, ‘Indie rock’.

• Rock bands from some genres use a saxophone. More rarely, groups also use bowed stringed instruments such as violins or cellos, and brass instruments such as trumpets or trombones.

• Over the years as Rock music has progresses, it has been associated with particular styles and colours. Due to stereotypes, when people think of rock music, they think of the colour black. The reasons for this are because the majority of rock artists wear all darkcoloured clothing when performing live and in music videos. Additionally, they have the main background colours in a black or grey colour andmost of the props such as amplifiers and drums are also dark colours.

• The clothes that people associate with rock music are usually black motorbike jackets, black leather jeans, and motor bikers boots.

• The Mohican hair style is portrayed as a rockers hair style and other trends such as many body piercings are also linked with rock music. The reason for this is that the people in these video are wearing and using these styles. Rock bands from some genres use a saxophone. More rarely, groups also use bowed stringed instruments such as violins or cellos, and brass instruments such as trumpets or trombones.

• The perceptions of rock music relate to our video a lot because the sound track in our music video is a rock song, Queen – Bicycle Race. So the way in which rock music is stereotypes will presumably affect the impression our video initially has on the viewer because of the soundtrack. From audience research we found that a lot of people think that music videos contain middle aged adults, jumping around in black and making a lot of noise. We aim to change this stereotype of rock music because our music video is not like this. We have teenagers acting in the video and instead of dark colours everywhere, we have mainly bright colours and the clothing that the characters are wearing are also bright. By doing this we hope that we can change peoples’ impression of rock music and rock music videos.

How it relates to our video?
