MUSIC GENREVOCAL GENRE:

This genre is for music created for the human voice without accompaniment. It is what is known as “a cappella” voices. For example: a choir.

INSTRUMENTALGENRE:

Pure music: this genre applies to music that is composed to be played as music, and nothing else. A symphony is an example of this genre.

Descriptive music: this genre refers to refers to music that represents extra-musical contexts that are not directly related to music, as in the piece pacific 231

VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL GENRE:

This genre applies to music that requires a combination of voices and instruments. An example would be a rock band.

RELIGIOUS GENRE:

This is music composed to be played in a religious context. We can distinguish between two modes of religious music , depending on wether or not it is part of the liturgy (the way in which public religious worship, is conducted). These are:

Liturgical music Music composed for religious ceremonies, as part of the liturgy, such as a Gregorian chant or a mass.

Non liturgical music:

Music of a religious character composed for a religious purpose, but wich is not part of the liturgy. Christmas carols are an example of this type of composition.

PROFANE GENRE:

This comprises any composition that serves no religious purpose, whether liturgical or non-liturgical, and which is used for entertainment or for cultural or education purposes.

Depending on these two possibilities, we can divide profane into two categories:

Popular music:

Folk music, which includes popular folk music from anonymous sources ballads and local legends and history, handed down from anonymous sources, ballad and local legends and history, handed down from one generation to the next. For example: a sardana from Catalonia or a muñeira from Galicia.

Light music, which includes any simple, easy-to-understand, mainstream music of a marked commercial character, generally intended for leisure. There are many examples of light music, including pop music, rock, blues, and so on.

Cultured music

Intended for a cultural context, these compositions are written in a specific period. They reflect the cultural context of the time and the composer`s personal thoughts. They try to describe our complex emotional framework and how we respond to our feelings and moods. Typically, we think of cultural music as classical music, “serious music” such as a symphony or a concert.

FUNCTIONAL GENRE:

This is genre applies to music that serves as a backdrop to important events, such as commemorations, shows and opening ceremonies. The Olympic hymn is an example of this genre.

CINEMATOGRAPHIC GENRE: Motion picture music.

This is when motion picture soundtracks are used to reinforce the film`s message, maximizing the sentiments and emotions in the script.

THEATRE GENRE: Stage music

Stage music is used in artistic expressions acted out on a stage, as in plays, opera, zarzuelas, musicals, ballet and dance.

ADVERTISING GENRE: Advertisement music

Used for radio and TV ads, this genre employs in the same way films do. It tries to get people to choose certain products by combining pictures and suggestive music to catch the attention of potential buyers
