THE ROCK GENRE

Why we should choose it for our music video.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Our target audience for the Rock genre would have to be a varied age of

males and females between the age of 13-17.

I have managed to find a video within the Rock genre (My Chemical

Romance – Teenagers) and have managed to find the official statistics of

the video on YouTube.

This is unusual as most rock videos are aimed ant and are more popular

with male.  We can also see from the map that the video is most popular

in America, Alaska and the UK.

However, Rock music usually has a vast variety of ages in their fanbase

and often are not just subject to one sex, as both males and females like

them.

CONVENTIONS OF ROCK

For most rock videos in this

day and age, the story of the

actual video is a must, the

narration of the whole video

can be seen as one of the most

important things about the

video. If we look back to the

70’s, when the rock era was

first truly born, most of the

videos just contained footage

from a concert that they have

just recently done, or just the

band performing on a stage to

the camera.

The mise-en-scene is usually simplified, with sets being a stage

and bright stage lights often included – this could be a very simple

music video to film if we do choose rock, this sort of backdrop could

be used for the chorus, and for the rest of the song, a narration can

be filmed.. Depending on the lyrics of the song.

The shots that are mostly used emphasise the bands togetherness,

if it is a band, this could be done simply by a variety of long shots.

Props mostly consist of musical instruments, which are easy to get

hold of. Alcohol in the background, and posters, to keep up the

reputation and persona of the band.

POTENTIAL SONGS TO USE

I think a good potential song that could be used, is

30 Seconds To Mars – City of Angels. This is

because when looking at the lyrics we can

almost picture a story in our minds without

seeing the actual music video, making the

filming process easy if we pick a single route

and stick with it.

With the lyrics “City of Angels” we think of

somewhere in America, this could be achieved

easily by preferably in a place that cannot be

recognised as Peterborough, shots of L.A could

also be used in achieving this American effect.

WHY SHOULD WE CHOOSE ROCK?

Big enough target audience to appeal to any age or gender.

Easy to achieve elements of mise-en-scene to film.

Forty years of the rock genre to use and look back on to take

inspiration from for our potential piece.
