Pilot Cleaning Instructions for the Equator, Bantam, Tropic, and Glo-Ray Heaters

In order to properly clean the Rinnai pilot orifice and air venturi you mustfollow the procedure below.

NOTE; Service must be performed by a qualified installer, Service agency or gas technician.

First remove the pilot gas line from the pilot burner. Then using 120 psiof compressed air from an air com-presser blow through the pilot orificein the same direction as the gas flows through this assembly. See arrow to the left indicating direction of flow. DO NOT blow air through the gas supply line to the pilot assembly.

Next you will need to blow through the air venturi on the bottom side of the pilot assembly with 120 psi of compressed air, as above. See arrow to the left for location of the Air venturi.

Note; The above procedure is only recommended for Rinnai heaters. Contact the product manufacturer for other brands of product for their pilotcleaning instructions.

Proper Procedure for Checking Screw-in Type Thermocouples

NOTE; Service must be performed by a certified installer, service agency or gas technician.

Thermocouple checking procedure for “Screw in type thermocouple):

Set your voltage meter to a DC milli-volt scale. This scale should be able to read above 35 milli-volts. Place the red lead of your meter to the copper dome part of the thermocouple that screws up inside the gasvalve, place the black lead to the copper lead to the thermocouple as shown in the picture below. Now apply heat to the thermocouple thatcomes into contact with the pilot flame. If the thermocouple is good, youwill see the milli-volt output start to increase. Maximum output will bebetween 20 – 30 milli-volts. After you have eliminated the thermocoupleas the source of the problem, proceed with cleaning the pilot assembly.

Proper Procedure for Checking Plug-in Type Thermocouples

NOTE; Service must be performed by a certified installer, service agency or gas technician.

Thermocouple checking procedure for “Plug in type thermocouple):

Set your voltage meter to a DC milli-volt scale. This scale should be able to read above 40 milli-volts. Place one lead of your meter into each receptacle of the thermocouple plug as shown in the picture below. Now apply heat to thethermocouple that comes into contact with the pilot flame. If the thermocouple is good, you will see the milli-volt output start to increase. Maximum output will bebetween 20 – 30 milli-volts. After you have eliminated the thermocoupleas the source of the problem, proceed with cleaning the pilot assembly.

The magnetic unit can be checked for proper operation on all non-thermostat gas control valves, manually operated valves.

The magnetic unit in thermostat units can not be checked by following the procedure below. DO NOT remove mag units from thermostat model units. The thermostat gas valve is not field serviceable.

NOTE; Service must be performed by a certified installer, service agency or gas technician.

Proper procedure for checking the magnetic unit, (Screw-in and Plug-in) types.

Shut off the gas supply system to the appliance. Remove the magnetic unit from the gas valve. Once it has been removed reconnect the thermocouple to the magnetic unit. Then apply heat to the thermocouple while holding down on the spring loaded plunger of the magnetic unit. See picture below of magnetic unit. Hold the plunger down until it bottoms out for thirty seconds at the same time heat is being applied to the thermocouple. After thirty seconds release the plunger. If the plunger stays down the magnetic unit is good. After a few seconds the plunger will release and spring back out. If the plunger fails to stay down, it’s defective and will have to be replaced.

Infra-Red Heater Burner Cleaning Instructions

NOTE; Service must be performed by a qualified installer, Service agency or gas technician.

Remove the unit from the structure before performing this procedure due to the dust created by the cleaning process. In order to properly clean the burner on Rinnai Vent-Free Radiant Heaters you will need an air gun or nozzle. You will then blow directly into the burner plaques from roughly six inches away. Take time to blow through each of the holes in the plaques. This procedure will take about three minutes if done properly. After blowing the burner out, fire the unit up and let it operate for two minutes. Shut the unit down and repeat the above procedure three additional times. Problems caused by dirty burners such as, humming and/or air noises, dull plaques, and over burning at the top of the plaques will be eliminated by following the above procedure. Units that are serviced annually as stated in the owner’s manual normally do not encounter these problems. If the burner has to be replaced, you will need to replace the entire burner assembly. Rinnai does not allow replacement of single plaques.

Blow 120 psi of compressed air directly into the burner plaques from six inches away. DO NOT, use low pressure blowers.

Servicing Vent-Free Product

There’s only four components that can fail on Infra-Red Heaters, these are the;

1. Regulator on the appliance – You can check this component by checking to see if you have the proper inlet gas pressure on the outlet side of the regulator or the pressure to the pilot assembly when the handle is pushed down to allow gas to the pilot. The inlet pressure should be 6 – 10” W.C. for natural gas units and 10 – 13” of water column (W.C.) on propane gas. The regulator on ALL vent free heaters is not adjustable. DO NOT attempt to adjust the regulator, the adjustment screw has been sealed at the factory to prevent it from being altered. Tampering with the regulator will void the unit’s warranty and could cause serious bodily injury, death, or fire.

2. Gas control valve – The gas valve can be checked by verifying the manifold gas pressure listed in the Owner’s manual of the unit being serviced. All manual gas control valves have the above regulator built into the gas control assembly. If you determine the gas control valve to be defective, the entire assembly must be replaced.

Servicing Vent-Free Product

3. Burner Assembly – First before replacing a burner inspect it for cracks in the plates. If no cracks are found, blow out the burner assembly with 100 psi of compressed air. Hold the air nozzle out six inches from the burner plate surface and blow directly into each hole in the burner surface. Take time to ensure each hole is blown out. After blowing out the burner, fire the unit up for one minute, shut the unit down and repeat the above procedure. Do this procedure three times. In most cases this will make most burners function as new again. Low pressure blowers will not clean the burner plates properly. It is a good idea to blow out around all orifices during this process also.

4. Pilot Assembly – This component is replaced most often by servicemen. Over 99% of all pilot assemblies that are replaced are not defective. Please follow the pilot cleaning instructions in this booklet before replacing a pilot assembly. Dust balls build up inside the pilot burner blocking the air/gas flow through the pilot. One good way to tell if your pilot needs cleaning is to turn the lights off in the room. Look at the pilot flame with the lights out. If the flame appears yellow at the tip or it seems to turn up such as a dog’s tail, that’s a good indication the pilot needs to be blown out. If the pilot is properly cleaned, you may never have to replace another pilot assembly on a Rinnai heater.
