Giunto alla sua 14esima edizione, Religion Today è un festival che si coniuga ottimamente ad un territorio sensibile alle problematiche religiose e spirituali e ai temi del dialogo, dell’accoglienza,

della pace. Se in passato Trento è stata la sede del primo grande Concilio della cristianità, oggi il Trentino ha centinaia di missionari e di cooperanti che operano nelle aree più difficili del mondo, a stretto contatto con culture e religioni diverse dalla propria. Ha un centro come il Cinformi, all’avanguardia nelle politiche di accoglienza degli immigrati, ha un’Università che incoraggia l’arrivo di studenti dai Paesi in via di sviluppo, realtà come la Fondazione Campana dei Caduti di Rovereto o l’Osservatorio sui Balcani, che da anni pro-muovono iniziative in favore della pace e della riconciliazione. Ha una legge sulla solidarietà internazionale che destina una quota fissa del bilancio provinciale al sostegno dei progetti di cooperazione allo sviluppo. In Trentino esiste poi un tessuto vivace e attivo di enti e di associazioni che si occupano di solidarietà e volontariato, che promuovono manifestazioni in grado di far rete e di favorire l'apertura della nostra provincia alle dinamiche del mondo.Per questo ritengo che un festival del cinema come Religion Today nel quale si incontrano le religioni del mondo, senza preclusioni e senza pregiudiziali, trovi in Trentino davvero la sua sede “naturale”.Quest'anno poi sarà un'edizione speciale che vede per la prima volta la collaborazione fra il festival trentino e Faith Shorts, il concorso

annuale di cortometraggi rivolti ai giovani e organizzato dalla Tony Blair Faith Foundation. Un risultato importante e qualificante per la nostra provincia, che conferma la vocazione di questa terra al dialogo e all'incontro. Una terra di confine, abituata da sempre al dialogo fra culture diverse ma al contempo "gelosa" dei suoi valori, delle sue prerogative e della sua storia peculiare di Autonomia.Il tema scelto, "Povertà. Problema o occasio-ne?", sul quale sono chiamati a confrontarsi oltre sessanta pellicole selezionate fra quasi trecento film provenienti da tutto il mondo, offre poi mille occasioni di spunto. Non solo il Sud del Mondo, dove vivono in povertà estrema oltre un miliardo di persone, ma anche il Mondo Occidentale, il cui modello di sviluppo è stato messo in crisi dalla recente crisi globale, una congiuntura negativa che ci sta costringendo a riorientare la crescita della nostra società e a trovare nuovi percorsi.Infine un'ultima annotazione positiva sulla presenza consolidata del festival in Trentino, con appuntamenti su tutto il territorio in grado di penetrare nella realtà delle valli, nonché occasioni rivolte ai filmaker trentini. Momenti importanti che, anche alla luce dell'attività svolta dalla neo nata Trentino Film Commission, ci permetteranno di contribuire alla crescita delle professionalità presenti sul nostro territorio.Religion Today Filmfestival è dunque un even-to che si conferma, anno dopo anno, come un'importante risorsa per tutto il Trentino.

Now in its 14th edition, Religion Today is a festival perfectly connected to an area which is sensitive to religious and spiritual problems and the themes of dialogue, welcome and peace. While

in the past Trento hosted one of the great Councils of Christendom, today Trentino has hundreds of missionaries and cooperative workers who operate in the most difficult areas of the world, in close contact with cultures and religions very different from our own. Trento has a groundbreaking centre called Cinformi to welcome immigrants; it has a university which encourages the arrival of students from devel-oping countries; it has other entities, such as the Peace Bell Foundation in Rovereto or the Observatory on the Balkans, which for years have promoted initiatives in favour of peace and reconciliation. Trento has laws governing international solidarity which sets aside a fixed sum from the provincial budget for sustaining projects of cooperation for development. Moreover, in Trentino there exists a lively and active world of groups and associations involved in solidarity and voluntary work, who promote events aimed at encouraging network-ing and opening our province to the dynamics of the world at large. That is why I believe that a film festival like Religion Today, in which the world’s religions can come together without exclusion and prejudice, is really ‘at home’ in Trentino.This year will be a special edition as it sees the first collaboration between the Trentino festival and Faith Shorts, the annual competi-

tion for short films aimed at young people organized by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation; an outstanding achievement for our province, which underlines the vocation of this area for dialogue and encounter. Trentino is a borderland which is used to dialogue between different cultures, but at the same time jeal-ously defends its values, its prerogatives and its particular history of Autonomy. The chosen theme, “Poverty. Problem or op-portunity?”, which has inspired over sixty films selected from among almost three hundred applications from all over the world, offers countless possible interpretations. Not only the North-South divide where over a billion people live in extreme poverty, but also the Western World, whose model of development has been plunged into crisis due to the recent global recession, which is forcing us to redirect the growth of our society and find new pathways. Lastly, on a positive note, the consolidated presence of the festival in Trentino, with appointments throughout the area reaching out to the valley communities, as well as op-portunities aimed at Trentino film-makers are important moments. Ones which, in light of the activities carried out by the recently founded Trentino Film Commission enable us to contribute to the development of professionals in our region. The Religion Today Film Festival is an event which year after year has confirmed itself as an important resource for the whole Trentino region.

Povertà.Problema o occasione?

Quattordici anni di vita e un tema che ancora una volta abbina una precisa linea di riflessione sul religioso a una forte dimensione sociale. Quando, alla fine dell’edizione 2010, ci siamo interrogati sulle nuove sfide che ci poneva la cronaca, dopo l’intensa riflessione sui “Viaggi della fede. Viaggi della speranza”, la scelta è caduta quasi naturalmente sulla natura e gli effetti di quella crisi economica internazionale che esplode oggi in tutta la sua gravità, tra l’allarmismo mediatico e un diffuso senso di impotenza, generando sofferenze e incertezze crescenti.L’obiettivo è sempre quello di preservare lo spirito generoso e dialettico che è all’origine del Festival senza rinunciare a guardare avanti, in un confronto aperto con le trasformazioni profonde che investono tanto il settore dell’audiovisivo quanto la società nel suo rapporto con principi e tradizioni religiose incarnati nelle persone e nelle comunità. Allora largo ai giovani, con la partecipazione attiva e creativa delle scuole, ma anche attraverso il coinvolgimento di uno staff under 30 sensibile e motivato. E al tempo stesso attenzione a pubblici diversi che nel panorama del film religioso possono trovare risposte sempre più varie e articolate alla loro domanda di cultura e informazione.Per la sua XIV edizione, il Festival intende dunque indagare la povertà come tema e problema ad un tempo sociale e culturale, spirituale, etico e teologico, che coinvolge direttamente le religioni e che può diventare occasione per approfondire il dialogo inter-religioso. Ci interessa capire se e come il

cinema offra un linguaggio e uno spazio di comunicazione adeguati a questo dialogo.Da un lato il tema vorrebbe far emergere la varietà di atteggiamenti verso le cose materiali elaborati nel solco delle diverse tradizioni religiose: dalla povertà come sventura e ma-ledizione celeste alla povertà volontariamente scelta, in forma personale o comunitaria, come esigenza di verità e di assoluto, fino alla povertà come forma radicale di spossessa-mento di sé dei "santi folli". In ciascuna di queste tradizioni c'è una saggezza che chiede di essere accolta, evitando al tempo stesso ogni forzatura e ogni elogio strumentale della povertà materiale.Dall'altro lato Religion Today intende approfondire i temi dell'impegno etico contro l'ingiustizia e la sperequazione che negli ultimi decenni, a livello locale come su scala plane-taria, hanno allargato il fossato tra crescita ed emarginazione, sullo sfondo delle incertezze e della sfiducia generate dalla crisi economica in una società che predica l'individualismo, la competizione, il guadagno e il successo ad ogni costo. A fronte di queste contraddizioni, alle comunità dei credenti e a tutte le persone di buona volontà si impone di ripensare l'idea di povertà senza per questo cessare di com-batterla. La povertà, in questo contesto, può essere interpretata anche come la testimonian-za controcorrente di una cultura che si oppone all'esclusione in nome della solidarietà.

Poverty. Problem or opportunity?

Fourteen years since we began and again we have chosen a theme which combines a clear line of reflection on religion with a strong social dimension. At the end of the 2010 edition, when we were thinking about the latest challenges posed by the daily news, after such intense reflection on “Journeys of Faith. Journeys of Hope”, the choice was practically made for us to focus on the nature and effects of the international economic crisis, the heavy effects of which are still being felt, from mediated alarmism and a widespread sense of impotence, generating suffering and growing uncertainty. The aim has always been that of maintaining the generous dialectical spirit which is at the heart of the festival without failing to look ahead, openly examining the profound transforma-tions which are affecting both the audiovisual sector and society at large in its relationship with the religious principles and traditions embodied in people and communities. Hence we have made way for young people with the active and creative participation of schools and also through the involvement of new, highly sensitive and motivated staff members all under 30. At the same time we try to make sure that different audiences are able to find answers to their increasingly varied and articulate questions on culture and information within the panorama of religious films. Therefore, for its XIV edition, the Festival plans to investigate the theme of poverty not only as a social problem, but one which is above all cul-tural, spiritual, ethical and theological, directly involving religions and which could become the key towards more in-depth inter-religious

dialogue. We would like to know how cinema offers a language and communicative space appropriate to this dialogue.On the one hand the theme seeks to highlight attitudes towards material things as viewed by different religious traditions: from poverty seen as a misfortune and heaven-sent curse, to poverty which is actively sought-after, chosen by an individual or community, as a means of truth and an absolute. Then there is poverty as a radical form of deprivation of self as practiced by certain “holy fools”. Behind each of these tra-ditions there is a kind of wisdom which should be respected whilst at the same time neither encouraging nor praising material poverty.On the other hand Religion Today intends to further investigate the themes of ethical com-mitment to combatting injustice and inequality which, over the last few decades both at a local and global level, have widened the gap between growth and marginalization, against a background of uncertainty and lack of trust generated by the economic crisis in a society which preaches individualism, competition, accumulating wealth and achieving success at any cost. Faced with these contradictions, with communities of believers and all people of good will, we aim to rethink the idea of poverty, however seeking to prevent it. Poverty in this context can be interpreted as a testimony to a counterculture which opposes exclusion from society in the name of solidarity.

In viaggio. Le sedi di Religion Today

Dodici giornate di proiezioni e incontri nelle sedi principali di Trento e provincia, Roma, Milano, Bolzano e Nomadelfia (14-26 ottobre), con anteprime a Teggiano, Merano e Bassano. Sono questi i cardini di un’edizione caratterizzata dalla straordinaria crescita delle iscrizioni, con quasi 300 film rappresentativi delle diverse religioni pervenuti al concorso da tutto il mondo.L’edizione 2011 rinnova dunque l’impegno per la qualità dei film e della rete delle collaborazioni, che a livello internazionale cresce in particolare attraverso l’alleanza con Faith Shorts, il festival annuale del cortometraggio organizzato dalla Tony Blair Faith Foundation. Prosegue inoltre l’espansione del Festival tanto sul territorio trentino quanto sul piano nazionale, con il coinvolgimento attivo di diversi pubblici attraverso la formazione di giurie speciali, l’attenzione alle diverse comunità etniche e religiose e la proposta di percorsi laboratoriali. L’apertura dei lavori si terrà a treNto, dove saranno proiettati tutti i film in concorso e si riunirà la Giuria internazionale. Il programma trentino si aprirà con una tavola rotonda organizzata con le ACLI, la Caritas Diocesana, la Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto, la Fondazione Fontana e Unimondo, con l’obiettivo di approfondire il tema dell’anno attraverso le voci delle comunità religiose a confronto con esperti del mondo della finanza etica. In città la rassegna si svilupperà in nove

giornate ininterrotte di attività per le scuole, proiezioni e incontri pubblici con i registi e gli ospiti internazionali del Festival. La presenza della manifestazione sul territorio provinciale sarà rafforzata attraverso appuntamenti in diverse località quali Arco, Lisignago, Padergnone, Pergine Valsugana, Tuenno e Vezzano.Proseguono le contaminazioni con altri linguaggi come il teatro e la musica, con la collaborazione della compagnia teatrale Arditodesìo e dei cori "I Minipolifonici" e “Piccole Colonne” di Trento.Riparte inoltre il percorso di proposta e riflessione sul ruolo delle religioni nelle relazioni internazionali nato dalla collaborazione fra Ministero Affari Esteri - Unità di Analisi e Programmazione, Provincia autonoma di Trento, ISPI – Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale e Religion Today Filmfestival. Quest’anno i lavori si svilupperanno sul tema “La nuova regione euro-mediterranea: la necessità di un dialogo postsecolare”, che sarà presentato al pubblico del Festival nella serata del 20 ottobre.Novità del 2011 sarà l’organizzazione a Trento, nella sua interezza, dell’esperienza del laboratorio di convivenza tra registi, produttori e esperti di diverse fedi e nazionalità, con momenti di confronto e di incontro nello spirito della “convivialità delle differenze”. I lavori di gruppo saranno aperti gratuitamente a tutti i filmaker trentini; in questo modo il Festival intende contribuire anche alla crescita delle professionalità presenti sul territorio.

Around and about with Religion Today

There will be twelve days of screenings and meetings in the festival’s main host towns and cities, namely Trento and its province, Rome, Milan, Bolzano and Nomadelfia (14-26 October), with previews in Teggiano, Merano and Bassano. This is the setting for an edition characterized by an extraordinary increase in applications for the competition, with almost 300 films representing different religions from all over the world. The 2011 edition has renewed its commitment to quality films and creating a network of col-laborations, which is growing at international level in particular through the partnership with Faith Shorts, the annual festival of short films organised by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation. Likewise the expansion of the Festival contin-ues both locally and nationally, with the active participation of different audiences through the formation of special juries, attention to differet ethnic and religious communities and several proposed workshops. The festival will begin in TRENTO, where all the films in competition will be screened and the Internationl Jury will meet. The Trentino programme opens with a round table orga-nized by ACLI, Caritas Diocesana, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto, Fondazione Fontana and Unimondo, with the aim of exploring the theme of the year through the voices of different religious communities alongside experts from the world of ethical finance. In the city the festival will take place over nine days of non-stop activity for schools,

public screenings and meetings with film-makers and international guests of the Festi-val. The Festival’s presence throughout the province will be reinforced by appointments in different places namely Arco, Lisignago, Padergnone, Pergine Valsugana, Tuenno and Vezzano.Another aspect which continues this year is that of collaborating with other languages, such as theatre and music, with the company Arditodesìo and the choirs "I Minipolifonici" and “Piccole Colonne” of Trento. Again there will be a reflection on the role of religions in international relations, thanks to the collaboration between The Italian Foreign Office - Ministero Affari Esteri - Unità di Analisi e Programmazione, the Autnono-mous Province of Trento, ISPI – Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale and the Religion Today Film Festival. This year the theme to be debated is “The new euro-med-iterranean region: the need for post-secular dialogue”, which will be presented to the public on the evening of 20 October. One new aspect for 2011 is the hosting of the entire living workshop experience in Trento. Film-makers, producers and experts of different faiths and nationalities will spend a few days living together sharing ideas and holding meetings in the spirit of “celebrating our differences”. Group work will be open to all Trentino film-makers free of charge; in this way the festival intends to contribute to the development of professionals in this area.

Anche quest’anno roMA ospiterà una giornata di studi sul tema dell’anno del Festival in collaborazione con la Facoltà di Scienze della comunicazione Sociale della Università Pontificia Salesiana (24 ottobre). L’appuntamento nelle settimane successive sarà seguito da una rassegna dei migliori film dell’edizione che saranno analizzati e recensiti dagli studenti con particolare riguardo agli assi portanti della Facoltà: i giovani e la comunicazione. Per la prima volta, inoltre, il Festival collabora con il centre culturel Saint-Louis de France, "Institut français" a Roma e presso la Santa Sede fondato nel 1945 dal filosofo Jacques Maritain; tra il 24 e il 26 ottobre, il prestigioso centro nel cuore della capitale sarà teatro di una rassegna di proiezioni e approfondimento soprattutto sul cinema francese e francofono a tema religioso.

Religion Today 2011 sarà anche a MILANo grazie alla nuova partnership con il centro Francescano culturale Artistico rose-tum quale sede ufficiale di proiezione (19-21 ottobre). La rassegna si inserisce nell’ampio progetto culturale del Centro quale luogo di incontro e crescita personale, attraverso la cultura, lo scambio e il dialogo.Tornano gli appuntamenti di NoMADeLFIA e boLZANo/boZeN che anche quest’anno faranno ricorso allo strumento delle giurie speciali come occasione di coinvolgimento e partecipazione, con particolare riguardo ai giovani e alle scuole. I gruppi familiari della comunità grossetana fondata da don Zeno Santini attribuiranno il premio “Fraternità”,

mentre il capoluogo altoatesino, città dalla forte dimensione multilingue e multicultu-rale nel cuore d’Europa, vedrà la rinnovata collaborazione con le classi dell’Istituto Salesiani Don bosco rainerum e la novità di un appuntamento speciale “dal libro al film” organizzato di concerto con la bi-blioteca civica “c.battisti”. Per la prima volta il Festival farà tappa anche a MerANo grazie alla collaborazione con la Comunità Evangelica Luterana.Si confermano inoltre il legame con bAS-SANo, con proiezioni commentate presso il centro di spiritualità ignaziana di Villa San Giuseppe, e l’anteprima presso la diocesi di teGGIANo-PoLIcAStro in provincia di Salerno, in programma per l’8 ottobre 2011.

E il viaggio continua. Da qualche anno, infatti, la sede di Trento è anche centro di cultura permanente dove lo staff dell’Associazione Bianconero, che organizza il Festival, mette a disposizione di scuole, enti e associazioni un archivio ricco di oltre 1200 titoli provenienti dai cinque continenti. Lungo tutto l’anno ven-gono organizzati anche eventi e scambi con altri festival internazionali, da Gerusalemme a Dhaka Bangladesh.

Also this year ROME will play host to a day of in-depth study on the Festival’s theme of the year, in collaboration with the Facoltà di Scienze della Comunicazione Sociale of the Università Pontificia Salesiana (24 October). In the weeks following this ap-pointment a selection of the best films will be analysed and reviewed by students, focusing particularly on what mainly concerns the Faculty: that is, young people and communi-cation. Moreover, for the first time the Festival will collaborate with the Centre Culturel Saint-Louis de France, "Institut français" in Rome and in the Holy See, founded in 1945 by the philosopher Jacques Maritain; from 24 to 26 October, the prestigious centre in the heart of the capital will play host to a selection of screenings mainly on French and French-speaking religious cinema.

Religion Today 2011 will also be present in MILAN thanks to a new partnership with the Centro Francescano Culturale Artistico Rosetum which will officially host the screenings (19-21 October). The Festival fits nicely into the wide-ranging cultural project of the Centre which is a meeting place for personal growth through culture, exchanging ideas and dialogue. A return to NOMADELFIA and BOLZANO/BOZEN is planned. Again this year special juries will see the involvement of young people and schools. The family groups of the community founded by don Zeno Santini will award the “Fraternity” prize, while the South Tyrol capital, a city with a strong multilingual and multicultural dimension in the heart of

Europe, will again collaborate with the classes of the Istituto Salesiani Don Bosco Rainerum and something new this year, a special appointment “from book to film” orga-nized with the collaboration of the Biblioteca Civica “C.Battisti”. For the first time the Festival will visit MERANO thanks to a new collaboration with the Evangelical Lutheran Community. Furthermore, links with two of the Festival’s historic host towns will again continue, in BASSANO, with screenings and commentary at the centre of Ignatian spirituality at Villa San Giuseppe, and a preview in the diocese of TEGGIANO-POLICASTRO in the province of Salerno, scheduled for 8 October 2011.

And so the journey continues. For some years now the Festival office in Trento has become a permanent cultural centre where the staff of the Bianconero Association, which organizes the Festival, also houses a rich archive of over 1200 films from five continents and makes them available to schools, organiza-tions and associations. Throughout the year events and exchanges are organized with other international festivals from Jerusalem to Dhaka Bangladesh.

Michèle BourgeotDopo gli studi di lingua tedesca e cinema, inizia a lavorare per la catena franco-tedesca ARTE. Ha realizzato 11 documentari, tra cui “Une année avec Soheib Bencheikh”, vincitore del premio “Dialogo e pace” del Religion Today 2010.After studying German and Cinema, she began working for ARTE, a French-German group. She has made 11 documentaries, amongst which “Une année avec Soheib Bencheikh”, winner of the “Dialogue and Peace” prize at Religion Today 2010.

Dorothea FranckLaureata in Linguistica Teoretica e Dottore in filosofia del linguaggio, dal 1973 insegna in diverse Università in Germania e nei Paesi Bassi. Ha all’attivo varie pubblicazioni su temi filosofici, letterari, poetici, estetici, artistici e religiosi.A graduate in Theoretical Linguistics and a Doctor in Philosophy of Language, since 1973 she has taught in various universities in Germany and the Netherlands. She has published various works on the themes of philosophy, literature, poetry, aesthetics, art and religion.

Serge GorielySpecialista di teatro e cinema, insegna presso l’Università cattolica di Louvain (Belgio). È regista e sceneggiatore, nonché cofondatore e organizzatore di Cinespi, film festival internazionale centrato sulla relazione tra cinema e spiritualità.He teaches at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium). He is also a film-maker and a playwright, and one of the founders and organizators of Cinespi, an international film festival centered on the relation between cinema and spirituality.

During the war, Don Vittorio Bonomelli from Brescia is a military chap-lain, paratrooper, radio operator and secret agent. Ungaretti wrote in a poem similar to a psalm: “A man when he is truly a man is nothing more than a clot of blood and dreams”. The protagonists of the DREAM programme – doctors, patients, the sick who do their best to redeem themselves and other desperate people – really do appear to represent this clot of blood. Blood, whose T-cell count is declining, the dream which made this possible.

Tutto inizia quando il preside della scuola frequentata dai bambini zingari milanesi si accorge che una di loro, Loredana, ha ambizioni artistiche e sogna la Scala. Loredana si appella alla Madonnina del Duomo per riuscire nella sua strada e racconta nel suo diario le vicende del campo, in un racconto corale in cui il sogno si intreccia con la difficile realtà politica e economica della comunità.

It all begins when the head of a school attended by gypsy children in Milan realises that one of them, Loredana, has artistic ambitions and dreams of performing at La Scala. She appeals to the Madonnina of the Cathedral to help her achieve her goals and writes in her diary about life in the camp; a musical tale in which the dream is interwoven with the harsh realities of the politics and economics of the community.

On 24 March 1980, Romero, the Bishop of San Salvador who had denounced social injustice and abuse on the part of politicians and the military, was assassinated while celebrating mass. His beatification which began in 1997 has not yet been completed. Romero remains a controversial figure: he never became a member of a political party yet was accused of Marxism, he never adhered to Liberation Theology, but is now considered an icon of it.
