I N T R O D U C T I O N TO THE TISHA B'AV WEBCAST

This Tisha B’Av marks the 32nd year that I have been presenting a special Kinot

program, beginning with the first year of my tenure as Rabbi of Congregation

Shomrei Emunah of Baltimore. It is the 19th year since this program has been

part of a webcast production of the Orthodox Union.

This year the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic have

necessitated changes in the format of the program. This year’s program has

been prerecorded, several days prior to Tisha B’Av, and will be available for

viewing by people all day long, so that people all over the world can view it

during their Tisha B’Av afternoon.

Its theme will relate to the special mood of Tisha B’Av afternoon, after

the Mincha service during which prayer of Nachem is recited. This prayer

helps us shift our attitude from grief and mourning toward consolation and

redemption.

Although Tisha B’Av is historically a time to contemplate past catastrophes

which faced the Jewish people, the circumstances in which we find ourselves

this year demand that we devote at least a portion of the day to contemplate

our current plight from a religious perspective.

Hence, the title of this year’s program is “Reflections on Recovery, Reflections on Recovery,

Resilience, and RedemptionResilience, and Redemption.”

We will include the current pandemic and its effects in our remarks and have

invited a special guest, himself a survivor of COVID-19, to address us.

It has been our practice to eulogize several individuals who have passed

away during the past year. The death of the righteous has been compared

by our Sages to the destruction of the Holy Temple. With those eulogies, we

will reflect upon the process of grief and have invited an individual who has

himself lost a parent this year to address us on the topic of grief and mourning.

We will reflect upon the concept of resilience by examining the lives of a

number of models of resilience, beginning with the prophet Jeremiah and the

Sage Rabbi Akiva. We will go on to consider other such models of resilience

in the course of Jewish history, including Holocaust victims and survivors and

contemporary individuals.

We will recite one kinah memorializing the six million victims of the Holocaust,

written by Yehuda Laib Bialer, himself a Holocaust survivor.

We will reflect together on the meaning of personal and national redemption,

drawing especially from the writings of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato, Rav

Kook, and the Modzitzer Rebbe, R’ Shaul Taub.

Rebuilding Jerusalemים ל לירוש   ,To Jerusalem, Your city וmay You return in compassion,  and may You dwell in it as You promised.  May You rebuild it rapidly in our days  as an everlasting structure,  and install within it soon the throne of David.

Console, O Lord our God,  the mourners of Zion and the mourners of Jerusalem,  and the city that is in sorrow, laid waste,  scorned and desolate; that grieves for the loss of its children,  that is laid waste of its dwellings, robbed of its glory, desolate without inhabitants.  She sits with her head covered like a barren childless woman. Legions have devoured her;  idolaters have taken possession of her;  they have put Your people Israel to the sword  and deliberately killed  the devoted followers of the Most High. Therefore Zion weeps bitterly,  and Jerusalem raises her voice.  My heart, my heart grieves for those they killed;  I am in anguish, I am in anguish for those they killed.  For You, O Lord, consumed it with fire,  and with fire You will rebuild it in the future,  as is said,  “And I Myself will be a wall of fire around it, says the Lord,  and I will be its glory within.”

This famous piyut by Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi, was widely copied and emulated throughout the ages, and seen as the ultimate expression of the Jewish people’s longing for their homeland. There are several notable differences between the Ashkenazic and Sephardic versions. The Sephardic tradition
