From Our Rabbi: By Rabbi Joshua Neely
Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. Then he said to the Kenites, “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up
out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites. 1 Samuel 15:5-6
If you remember from the Torah, the Amalekites were the worst na-tion of raiders and destroyers in the ancient Near East. Saul was tasked with ending their murderous tendencies which had continued unabated for hun-dreds of years. I’m not much of a military expert, but it would seem to me that he made a big mistake in the passage above; if you are going to attack a vicious, warlike people, you’ll probably be better off not announcing it in ad-vance to anyone, friend or foe.
Saul warned the Kenites not just because they had shown our ances-tors kindness, but because Judaism has always taught that war should be lim-ited to the least death necessary to achieve security and ultimately peace. We offer peace to our enemies (Deuteronomy 20:10) and room for retreat as well (Hilchot Melachim 6:7).
Two thousand years ago our Sages recognized that the Amalekites were no longer distinguishable from other nations and the command to at-tack them was rendered null and void (Berachot 28a). As such, there are no nations which may be destroyed, which makes the lessons of our war against them all the stronger. Even when fighting Amalek we must avoid hurting the innocent. If the innocent cannot or will not leave, then we will fight but con-tinue to minimize the risk to them even if it means adding to our own risk.
This is not how war has been waged by any other nation in the history of the world. Babylon, Rome and Medieval Europe accepted much higher risk to civilians than Israel does. They have faded into history and dust, but we remain strong. To believe it is only our military might that wins our victo-ries and not the strength of Torah is to miss this important lesson of history. Those who use might indiscriminately and think that is what brings victory, fail to see that true victory is peace and righteousness. “Some trust in chari-ots, others in horse but we recall Adonai. They stumble and fall but we rise and stand firm.” (Psalm 20) If we won a battle at the expense of Torah, we would have allowed our enemies to score a victory against God. Israel should be praised by our people and the world for the example she sets. If war must be fought, this is how we must fight. If peace is possi-
ble, we will seize it.

From Our President: By Eric Hoffman
Hello Temple Israelites,
Harriett’s Park at Temple Israel is almost two years old and is maturing into a wonderful playground for our kids. The Personnel Committee at Temple Israel has been working hard to hire our new full time Congregational Life Coordinator, and we plan to have our newest employee hit the ground running with the start of the new school year. As an up-date, we are still evaluating the large number of excellent applicants for the position. We may not currently have a CLC, but Temple Israel program committees and staff have been able to maintain a full line of activities as we head into the start of the school year. Here is a sampling of our activities: July 30 is the start of the 2014 edition of “Passport to Israel”, a summer program of Hebrew enrichment for our kids; August 2nd we are holding “Light up Havdalah” in the evening (including S'Mores for dessert); Lily Morgan’s Bat Mitzvah is on Au-gust 8-9; and the start of Hebrew School is on August 17th. Additionally, we still have monthly game nights (courtesy of Men’s Club) and Friday night Shabbat dinners (next is September 5th). Of course as we get into September, it means that the High Holidays are quickly approaching. Between the start of Hebrew School and the start of the High Holidays, this is the time of year when we have a larger than usual influx of new and prospective members. This makes it a wonderful time for you to (re-)connect with TI and participate in our plethora of activities. I look forward to seeing you at the Temple. Saturday, August 2, at 9:00 pm
Join us as we usher out Shabbat and stay for a fun and creative Light Up Havdalah activity
for kids! Using light sources (glow sticks, flashlights, etc.) and a camera setup with a long exposure,
everyone will be able to create light art!
Light Up Havdalah!
Delicious S'Mores!
The Havdalah service will take place in the Rein Sanctuary and light up activities will be-
gin immediately after in the Roth Social Hall. Tours of the school will be given, also.
Havdalah celebrates the distinction between Shabbat and the rest of the week, light and dark. To
make the light and dark stand out in all the colors of the rainbow, we’ll be painting with light. This
photography technique involves long exposures and colorful light sources. Temple Israel will pro-
vide glow-in-the-dark bracelets, glow sticks, finger-mounted LEDs and more; participants will
provide enthusiasm! Everyone is welcome to bring their own cameras as well. Following the fes-
tivities, S'Mores will be served!
For more information, please call the Temple Israel office at 407-647-3055 or [email protected].
No RSVP is needed & there is no charge.
Amazing Light Art!

Monday, August 4 at 8:30 pm at Congregation Ohev Shalom
The Fast of Tisha B’Av (Ninth of Av) begins at sundown on Monday, August 4. Community Erev services will be held at Congregation Ohev Shalom. The saddest day in Jewish history is the ninth of the month of Av. On this day, the Babylonians destroyed the First Temple in 586 BCE and the Romans burned down the Second Temple in 70 CE. Other tragedies in Jewish history that occurred on this day include the expulsion of the Jews of England in 1290, the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 and numerous actions by the Nazis during the Holocaust. To commemorate these tragic events, our sages designated Tisha B’Av as a full fast day, like Yom Kippur, from one evening to the next. In ad-dition to fasting, other prohibitions include drinking any liquid, bathing, wear-ing leather shoes, etc. On Erev Tisha B’Av we gather to read the Book of Lamentations (Eycha) with a special trope melody. This is an ancient dirge written by the prophet Jeremiah after the destruction of the First Temple. During the synagogue service it is customary to sit on the floor, as mourners, and we are not to greet each other, also as mourners. During the morning service we do not wear tefillin, because it is considered too joyous an act for so sad a day. On the following Tuesday morning, the holiday will be commemorated at the daily minyan at the Jewish Academy of Orlando at 7:45 am.

9:00 am Registration / Schmooze / Medical Form Pictures - Roth Social Hall 9:30 am Opening Assembly - Rein Sanctuary 10:00 am Parent Meeting - Rein Sanctuary During Registration you may complete paperwork while catching up with friends and enjoying some bagels, juice and coffee (for the adults!). At the Parent Meeting you will receive your child’s curriculum overview and a Parent Handbook. It is important that all parents attend this meeting as we will be forming Holiday/Event committees and selecting Room Parents. If you know anyone who is looking for a religious school, please invite them to call or come by for a tour and intro-duction. If you have any questions regarding our school, please feel free to call Rabbi Joshua Neely, Principal, at 407.647.3055.
Attention Meitin Religious School Parents! Now is the time to complete your registration forms for next year! There have been some important and exciting
changes to our school, so please read this information carefully and then download the new forms from our website:
https://www.tiflorida.org/learning/temple-israels-religious-school/
First of all, there is a change in meeting times for our school. Recognizing that it has been difficult to bring your chil-
dren on Wednesday afternoon by 4:00 pm, the start time for Wednesday has been moved one hour later, to 5:00
pm. Our students will meet from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm on Wednesday afternoons, thus leaving the same evening
time available for your children to complete homework and spend time with family. Our Sunday session time has
been changed to 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.
Secondly, in order to meet the educational needs of our students and provide a meaningful classroom cohort, the grade
designations have been realigned to reflect the composition of our student body. There will be three grades this coming
year:
K/1/2 Taught by Sharon Pinhas Meeting Sunday morning only
3/4 Taught by Adele Lipofsky Meeting Sunday morning & Wednesday Evening
5/6/7 Taught by Chuck Silverman Meeting Sunday morning & Wednesday Evening
Tuition rates remain the same with the tuition for students in Grade 2 remaining at the lower level.
For more information about these changes please contact Rabbi Neely or Sharon Sachs, VP of Education, who may
be reached at [email protected].

From Our Sisterhood President: By Cathy Swerdlow
I write this article having just returned from the International Convention in Whippany NJ and all I can
say is…WOW! Let me use this space to share with you some of the highlights:
Upon arrival I met Rabbi Lilly Kaufman, the new Executive Director of Torah Fund. What a wonderful
woman! I also got to see the new pin (see it on the next page!) and see a new set of note cards.
Judaica Fair, Bid ‘n’ Buy, Opening Plenum, Minchah, dinner, honoring Evelyn Auerbach (an amazing young
woman of 90!), Keynote address by Rabbi Gordon Tucker, a warm and loving tribute to Rabbi Neil Gillman
and his response, Maariv and a great Florida Region party all in one afternoon and evening! And this was
just the start.
Friday’s workshops were diverse. You had your choice among such things as creative Judaica Arts, workshops
on leadership or Torah Fund or Organizational management, social media, problem-solving, care and care
giving or study with our scholar-in-residence Rabbi Judith Hauptman or book sessions – either Debra Band’s
Kabbalat Shabbat: The Grand Unification or Rabbi Deborah Prinz’s On the Chocolate Trail: A Delicious Adventure
Connecting Jews, Religions, History, Travel, Rituals and Recipes to the Magic of Cacao! And that was just the morning!!!!
The afternoon continued with a Speedfest – like speed dating but workshops!, minchah and Installation of our
own, Carol Simon, as International President – so wonderful to see!
And then, Shabbat – there is no way to describe the spirituality of 400+ women welcoming Shabbat together. It
was truly a Shabbat that felt like a moment in Gan Eden. From Kabbalat Shabbat through Shabbat morning
service to Havdalah the day was filled with music, prayer, camaraderie and study. And who were our study
partners? – Rabbi Judith Hauptman, Chancellor Arnold Eisen, Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, Rabbi Deborah
Cantor, Rabbi Lilly Kaufman, Rabbi Diana Villa, Rabbi Sue Levi Elwell and more.
On Sunday there was a panel discussion centered on the Tzedakah theme of “Keep It Kind: Stop Bullying” that
presented much food for thought and actions to take. More on that later!
And, on the final day of the Convention we received our Emerald Jewel in the Crown Award for the third time
in a row (one of only 47 such Sisterhoods in the country!).
And these are just the highlights…there was so much more. All I can say is – it is so worth it. Convention will not come around again until 2017 – so start saving your money now. It isn’t cheap but there is definitely truth in the saying – You get what you pay for!! L’Shalom, Cathy Swerdlow [email protected]

IMPRESSIONS OF BERKACHER SYNAGOGUE
Arlene van de Rijn Interviews Daniel Wise
A group of Temple Israel members lovingly delivered our Goold Torah to the Berkach Village Synagogue build-ing in Germany to commemorate its 160th anniversary on June 1. The following interview is the second install-ment of this series.
Arlene: What are your most meaningful memories as you look back on this trip? Daniel: Traveling with the Torah was quite special in and of itself. Every person who came within sight of it was so reverent. It was very meaningful. When we arrived, we met with members of the Jewish congregation in Erfurt. We put the Torah in the Erfurt synagogue’s ark. After services on Friday evening, everyone had a light meal together. The 160th anniversary ceremony in Berkach was a day-long program. It started with a church service where the music minister led the mostly Christian group in Hashkivenu. There were numerous speakers talking about lessons to be learned from the Holocaust. Our Temple Israel delegation was warmly and repeatedly welcomed as the program moved from the church to the town square and finally to the synagogue itself. Harry carried the Torah into the building and handed it to the rabbi. As the cantor sang “Etz Chaim Hi,” they placed it into the ark. It was remarkable that this Torah should be so ceremoniously brought back into the building from which is was chased 65 years ago. Being in Germany felt odd. It’s very comfy in Germany today, and the people who were young during WWII seemed like regular people. It was frightening being in this beautiful place and, yet, you never for a moment forgot that people were murdered here. Germans seem to truly want to acknowledge what was done during the Holocaust. Every public place seemed to have some kind of memorial to the victims which refocuses you from the loss of a 6,000,000-person civilization to 6,000,000 losses of a single human being. We also visited Buchenwald. It all felt strange. The entire experience was meaningful to everyone who participated. Judaism alone was symbolized by our one Torah scroll. I think welcoming it back was cathartic for the non-Jews who were in attendance. They were able to emphasize that “we’re not like that anymore.”

Mirembe Kawomera “Delicious Peace” Coffee is grown on the slopes of Mt. Elgon in eastern Uganda by a cooperative of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim farmers. Fertile vol-canic soils, antique Arabica varietals, and the farmers’ craft combine to produce a rich and full bodied coffee, with distinctive hints of vanilla and spice, and a nutty sweetness.
A portion of the cost of Light, Dark, Decaf is donated to the Peace Kawomera Coop-erative to support schools, business development, and quality improvement projects. Mirembe Kawomera Decaf is made from 100% Fair Trade Organic coffee. Due to organic water-processed decaffeinating methods, we are un-able to source Mirembe Kawomera Decaf from Uganda.
Temple Israel Sisterhood will feature this coffee at Java and Judaica and have it available for sale in our Judaica Shop in 12 oz bags. If you would like a bigger quantity once you have tasted this delicious coffee, we can include you in the next bulk order.

Notes From Our Cemetery Chairman Dear Congregants,
On a visit to the cemetery you will see the beautiful landscaping that has been
installed and supervised under the efforts of Laurence Morrell. Recently a
major improvement to our Yank Frank Chapel was the installation of perma-
nent seating (pictured below) under the direction of Julian Meitin.
Shortly, we will be offering the opportunity to name a chair in the pavilion
with the following: IN HONOR OF or IN LOVING MEMORY OF. Look
for pricing information in our next monthly bulletin.

Temple Israel’s Keepers of the Flame Not surprisingly, our membership dues do not cover Temple Israel’s expenses and without generous dona-tions we would be unable to fulfill our mission of building a sacred community. Thus our basic dues represent a member’s minimum financial commitment. Recognizing that there are many members who have the ability and the desire to provide greater support in addition to their basic dues, Temple Israel created a membership category called Keepers of the Flame to provide a mechanism for this increased level of giving. The generosity of our current and future Keepers is vital to the sustainability and growth of Temple Israel.
In appreciation of this increased dues level of commitment, Keepers of the Flame are welcome at all Temple Israel sponsored Shabbat dinners, synagogue Seders and program events without additional charge. Only a reservation is required. Additionally, there is a designated “Keepers of the Flame” seating area at all of the High Holiday services.
The following giving levels are suggested:
Benefactors $15,000 and up
Pillars $10,000 to $14,999
Defenders $7,800 to $9,999
Guardians $5,300 to $7,799
Protectors $3,300 to $5,299
Preservers $2,400 to $3,299
Kindlers $2,000 to $2,399
If you would like to be counted among our Keepers of the Flame, please send your giving level to:
