Dear Friends,While summer hits most of thecountry on June 20th, I think it’sfair to say that in Arizona, summeris already here. By now kids areout of school, many are planningvacations to cooler climates, andthe pace slows down as the tem-perature reaches triple digits. Itappears that activity decreases asthe mercury rises.

Yet at Beth El, we are here for you365 days a year. In addition to our regular office hoursduring the week, we conduct services twice daily, morn-ing and night. I purposely say “services” and not“Minyanim” (plural for Minyan) because while wealways have services, we don’t always have a Minyan.We need you, our members, to insure that we have tenJewish adults at services each and every day. Whilethere is a core of 6 or 7 people who are here nearlyevery day, that leaves us with a gap that can only be filledby you. Many of you come when you are observing aYahrzeit for a loved one so that you can say Kaddish,but rest assured that if it wasn’t for others who attendedour service, you would not have a Minyan. I hope thatwhether you have to say Kaddish, either during a periodof mourning, or on the anniversary of the passing of afamily member, or even if you have no such Chiyuv(obligation) you might commit to supporting our ongo-ing Minyan which is the only ongoing egalitarian Minyanin the Valley of the Sun. We would welcome you withopen arms and we know that you will find friendshipand fellowship with other members of the Beth ElFamily. Sometimes it is particularly challenging to get aMinyan during the heat of the summer, so your pres-ence is even more appreciated at this time of the year.

I am also pleased to report that my Achilles’ tendon hasbeen healing well since my surgery in January. While Iwas unable to walk or drive for over three months, I wasstill able to make hospital visits, conduct funerals,unveilings, and weddings with the assistance of Dial-A-Ride, taxi service, and the assistance of my wonderfulwife and erstwhile driver, Debbi. But now, thankfully,I’m walking (mostly without a cane), and my surgeontold me that I am now safe to drive (it’s the pedestriansthat have to worry). I’ve even returned to the golfcourse, and I’m as bad a golfer as I have ever been, nowthat I’ve earned a true handicap.

I have heard that some people have been reluctant tocall me for pastoral assistance in recent months becausethey heard that I was still healing. I appreciate theirthoughtfulness, but that was certainly unnecessary thenand remains unnecessary now. If you or someone youknow is ill and could use a visit; if you want to call aboutplanning a Simcha (a wedding or a Bar/t Mitzvah), or

Typically, the Board administersand manages the affairs of the con-gregation and is charged with thesupervision and control of theproperty, adopts rules and regula-tions as it deems necessary andapproves the annual budget. TheBoard approves the employmentand termination of employment ofthe senior staff. They also set con-

gregational goals and manage the direction of the con-gregation. In other words, they have a big responsibility.

Each year there is a transition of lay leadership and whena member joins the Board, they are elected for a one,two, or three year term. Since we recently had ourAnnual Congregational meeting, I would like toacknowledge the Board members that have served andwhose current term ended with the May Board meetingand sadly - will not be returning for another term:

EDUCATION News

Education Today

Educating our children today poses newchallenges. Chances are that when youthink of a school you think of a classroomwith children sitting in one place in a quietroom with a teacher standing at the front ofa classroom with a whiteboard or black-board (or green or blue) behind her (orhim). Perhaps you also think of that teacheras having a large desk behind which s/heoften sat, formally separating him/herself

from his/her students. Today’s religious school classroom atBeth El doesn’t resemble this type of classroom in any wayexcept that the class contains students and teachers.

Today’s Beth El classroom likely includes one or more madri-him (teenagers who are assisting the teacher). Many of ourclassrooms have students from several grades, and a large pro-jector screen in front of the classroom or to the side in lieu ofa traditional board. Material the students are studying can beprojected on that screen, and students and the teacher are ableto take notes on the screen with special tools. In one of ourclassrooms, students can “write” on the screen using their fin-gers or faux pens.

What is going on in our classrooms that encourage us to leavea traditional classroom and even traditional teaching meth-ods? Studies indicate that in the secular classrooms, about20% of all students have special needs. At Beth El’s TalmudTorah, it is likely that 30-40% of our students have specialneeds. In addition, we recognize that logistics and schedulingmay make attending our classes during their set times unfeasi-ble.

Over the last five years we have been designing and imple-menting ways that we can both provide more individualizedinstruction to students within the larger framework of a class-room setting, and also providing a way for students who can’tattend classes at Beth El. Our madrihim program and ourBeth El On-Line program work together to provide one solu-tion to two challenges. Madrihim help teachers to createsmall groups or even one-on-one instruction, whicle the BethEl On-Line program gives us tools to reach students off-site –perhaps at their homes or in their parents’ office. If you comeinto any of our classrooms, you might find several students sit-ting in a classroom, and several more pictured on the screen.Our teachers are succeeding at meeting the challenge of teach-ing students who are physically present in their classroomsand students who are off site and sitting in front of a comput-er screen. Does it sound complicated? It is. It’s like an actorin a play in the round. To help the teachers combat the chal-lenges that arise from these changes in classroom structure,our madrihim are in the classrooms. If you want to see some-thing amazing, stop by Talmud Torah any Sunday orWednesday and see how our school has changed, and why weare at the forefront of using technology in a religious school.In fact, our use of technology has won us several awards andrecognition as well as the support of the Council for JewsWith Special Needs. Please, don’t just take my word for it, butplan to come visit one day after we resume classes on August25.

Preschool NewsMay has come to a close, as has our schoolyear. As always, the year seemed to fly by soquickly and we enjoyed each child and theiraccomplishments.

May was such a busy month. We focused oncelebrating our mothers by making them giftsand preparing for Mother’s Day Teas. Thetwo year old class decorated frames andmade sun catchers together, while the threeyear olds honored their mothers with a “lady-bug” theme. They made ladybug snacks,

ladybug purses and planters. They also dictated what they loveabout their mommies and sang a special song to them. The Pre-K group made their mothers aprons, clay handprints and vases.At their special lunch they gave them yellow roses and strawberrysmoothies and sang to them in English and Hebrew.

We also celebrated Shavuot during May with a special program.The children made their own blintzes by flattening out a piece ofbread, putting cream cheese on it and then rolling it up. Weplayed Shavuot related games and read stories.

I am looking forward once more to a fun-filled summer and CampYad B’Yad. Our goal is to provide an enriching experience with-in the framework of a Jewish environment. We will take a journeythrough literature as we focus on various authors. With each bookthe children will participate in various activities such as art, science,math, language, sensory and movement.

Each day the children will have water play activities which willinclude a water slide, mud pies, water tables, sprinklers, bubblesand more.

The entire camp will benefit from special visitors such as from thePhoenix Zoo, and the younger children will have a teddy bear pic-nic. Our Pre-K through 1st graders will experience many fieldtrips, some of which are bowling, the circus, the library, an indoorplayground, and a swimming party at my house.

What I enjoy most about the summer is when the whole campmeets each morning for T’filot. The children are so excited to sitwith their siblings or their new best friend. Each week we cele-brate Shabbat together and welcome any parents who want to joinus.

Try to stay cool this summer and, most important, keep your kidssafe around water.

Editor’s note: This is partof a series to profile BethEl’s wonderful volun-teers, written by DebraGelbart.

As a retired lawyer for the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency, EileenBloom knows that being especially knowl-edgeable about an organization is helpful todoing a great job, whether as an employee ora volunteer. She has volunteered at Beth El’sfront desk since the fall of 2005, and haslearned a lot about the congregation.

In addition to welcoming congregants andvisitors who come through the front door,she provides information to those who askquestions, completes acknowledgment cardsfor donations to the synagogue, sells gift shopitems, takes payments and helps with officetasks. “I’ve certainly learned how much isinvolved with running a synagogue,” saidEileen, who also is a member of theEndowment Committee.

Eileen also volunteers as a reading tutor inthe Madison School District in centralPhoenix. She and her husband, MarvinSiegel, a cardiologist, have been members ofBeth El since 1984, when they moved toPhoenix from Chicago. They have threegrown sons, Andrew, Eric and Zachary.Andrew is a physician in Philadelphia, Eric isa software developer in California andZachary is a mechanical engineer in Flagstaff.

All three of their sons had their bar mitzvahat Beth El. She’s glad to be a member andshe’s found that giving her time and energy tothe synagogue has enhanced her sense ofconnection. “I feel like I’m more a part ofBeth El by volunteering,” she said.
