PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK
FATHERS & DAUGHTERS Our Parsha begins with the laws of vows, teaching us both how a vow is
made, and how it may be annulled. Thus the Torah describes relationships within
which one may override a vow of the other, including a husband vetoing certain
vows made by his wife, and a father vetoing vows made by his minor daughter. It is
clear, however, that the father’s power does not derive simply from the fact that his
daughter is a minor, as he holds no similar power relative to his minor sons. It seems
to be a function of the father-daughter relationship. Indeed in Torah generally,
while a minor son may have certain limitations on his own independent ability to
accomplish, the father does not assume these abilities in place of the son. On the
other hand in the case of a daughter the father exercises domain over certain
aspects of her life, until she reaches adulthood, i.e. independence from him.
Examples of the father’s domain over his minor daughter include his ability to marry
her off, to claim her income for himself, and to override her vows. What is the basis
of this power of the father and why is it limited to his daughters?
HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA
WEARING FRESHLY LAUNDERED CLOTHING DURING THE
“NINE DAYS” One is to refrain from wearing freshly laundered clothing during the “Nine
Days”. The Poskim comment that this custom does not include clothing that fre-
quently gets dirty, such as undergarments and children’s clothing, but does apply to
shirts, pants, and the like. In order to “prepare” such clothing for the “Nine Days”
one should wear them in advance for enough time to cause them to lose their crisp,
fresh feeling. Earlier Poskim mention a method of “preparing” clothing for the “Nine
Days” by throwing them on the floor. Contemporary Poskim are hesitant to make
that recommendation because our homes no longer have dirt floors, rendering that
method less effective in our day and age. If in a bind, one can rely on this option, or
find another way to cause the clothing to lose their freshness. Wearing freshly laun-
dered clothing on Shabbos is permitted; therefore, if one forgot to “prepare”
clothing for the “Nine Days” one can wear a few shirts or outfits on Shabbos to
cause them to lose their freshness and then use them for the remainder of the
“Nine Days”. However, one must be careful not to do so in a way which is obvi-
ous that it is being done specifically for the upcoming week, so as not to violate
the general prohibition of preparing on Shabbos for a weekday need.
We welcome our members, their families and guests who have joined us for Shabbos!
