SPONSOR A KIDDUSH LUNCH AT AJ

To sponsor a tax-deductible Kiddush lunch at AJ:

Email Molly Evancho: [email protected]

Call Molly Evancho: 458-5359

Visit: www.adathjeshurun.com/kiddushsponsor

Adath Jeshurun gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the following for their sponsorship of the Shabbat Kiddush lunches: June 30, 2018 – Sponsored by Dr. Richard Lippman & Mrs. Susan Papp Lippman in honor of the upcoming marriage of Andrea Olinger and Jonathan Lippman.

July 28, 2018 – Sponsored by David M. Carney, Children and Grandchildren in honor of David’s 90th birthday, and the 77th anniversary of his bar mitzvah.

HIGH HOLY DAY SEATS

As we begin preparing for the High Holy Days, we ask our congregants with outstanding account balances to please remit all funds immediately. In keeping with the synagogue’s bylaws, High Holy Day seat reservation packets are only

sent to those members with balances no older than 90 days. For your convenience, we take all major credit cards as well as monthly bank drafts. Please call our Financial Administrator, Holly Southwick at 649-8135 if you have any questions about your synagogue account.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR 2018 HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES

High Holy Day Seat Reservation packets will be mailed soon. In keeping with security recommendations, reservations are again required for all members and guests. This year,

tickets will not be mailed. Instead, all reservations will be compiled on a list that staff and volunteers will check at the at the entrance doors. Once checked, members and guests will proceed inside as usual.

Please don’t let financial circumstances keep you from attending. Everyone is wanted, and everyone is welcome! Members needing financial assistance to reserve High Holy Day seats are asked to contact Rabbi Slosberg at [email protected], well in advance of the High Holy Days.

PARKING LOT SAFETY The AJ Preschool has expressed concern that people are driving very fast through the parking lot. The preschool children are often in the parking lot. Please slow down!

We are also having an issue with people exiting the parking lot through the lane that says: “Do Not Enter.” There have been near-miss accidents in this lane. For the safety of everyone, please exit the parking lot at the bottom of the hill onto Douglass Boulevard.

AJ BOOK CLUB • Next meeting: Sunday, August 26, 2018 • 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. • AJ Roth Family Board Room • Facilitated by Deborah Slosberg

“Norwegian by Night” by Derek B. Miller ~ 2013

“Derek B. Miller’s debut novel “Norwegian by Night” is a literary thriller that explores grief, memory, aging, and identity … Though heady, the novel is also funny, and laced with sardonic wit. [The novel also touches on the ‘greatest generation’ and Norway’s small Jewish population.]”

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES By AJ President, William Esakov

T he rem arks below are excerpts from a speech delivered by B ill Esakov at the 2018 AJ Annual M eet ing in M ay:

It is both a thrill and an honor to have been chosen to serve as your President. I believe that the

Synagogue is well-positioned to ensure its future. We have a strong Board of Trustees whose members are engaged and vested in AJ’s future. We have committees to identify ways to engage our younger families, including having more of the younger congregants serve on the Board. We are completing the final component of our building renovation, as we are currently replacing all windows from the 1963 construction of the Gittleman wing. We have begun to address the long-term financial viability of the Synagogue by participating in the Life & Legacy program.

There are several people whom I want to thank: Armand Rothschild for his three years of service, and for the fact that he will remain active on the Board for the coming year; Rabbi Slosberg and Cantor Lipp for their continued guidance and support; and Robin Silverman and Holly Southwick for their help and expertise which I will rely upon. I also want to thank and acknowledge all of the AJ staff members who ensure that AJ runs smoothly. Finally, I want to acknowledge those who are stepping down from the Board, and thank them for their service.

CONGRATULATIONS HOWIE EVANS!

The presentation below was made by Past-President, Arnold Zegart at the 2018 Adath Jeshurun Annual Meeting:

“Robin has given me the honor to make a presentation to recognize a very special person, who may not even realize just how very special

he is. His quiet demeanor often masks the extraordinary things that he does behind the scenes at AJ.

A few years ago, he generously agreed to serve in what was supposed to be a part-time volunteer position. What most people don't realize is how many full-time hours he actually spends on AJ issues. The special individual that I'm speaking about is our House Committee Chairman, Howie Evans!

In the past few years, I've had the privilege of working with Howie on many projects, both large and small. All I have to say is, “Howie, this needs fixing,” or “Rabbi says this needs attention,” or “Can you help solve this or that?” Howie’s answer is always, "I'm on it." He does this without ever complaining, and often receives little or no recognition.

I would like to present to Howie Evans a small token of our appreciation for all his hard work, dedication, and contributions of time and effort to our synagogue. Additionally, I’m sure that the entire Congregation joins me in thanking him for saving our shul thousands of dollars using his expertise in obtaining competitive bids and instituting cost-saving ideas.

I am delighted to present to Howie Evans the coveted “Golden Plunger Award.” Now this may appear to be somewhat of a gag gift, but this is no gag. May I suggest that before you attempt to use this in a toilet, you look inside the plunger for an envelope containing a small token of our appreciation. Mazel Tov and thank you from a very grateful synagogue.”
