Call the Rabbi! Rabbi Konigsburg visits the local hospitals on a regular basis. An

important part of his duties is to bring comfort and healing to those who are sick. Due to privacy laws, the hospitals can’t tell him if one of our members has been admitted. He could be just

down the hall, but if he doesn’t know someone is there, he will not know to make a visit.

Please call the Rabbi if you or someone you know is in the hospital so a timely visit can be made: 860-643-9563

Faithcraft I was reading an article the other day about how people react to change in the world around them. It was an interesting article that claimed people react to change in much the same way as people react to grief. There is denial that things are changing. There is anger that things can’t be the same. People start bargaining to bring back the old way of doing something. The article stated that people showed signs of depression about how things seemed to be changing out of control and then finally there was acceptance about the new situation. I certainly do not want to trivialize the stages of grief that those who have suffered a

personal loss have to endure. Change does not compare to death, even though for many people it is also a form of personal loss. This sense of loss when it comes to change is noteworthy because the world is constantly changing and the only thing that never changes is the fact that everything is changing. This summer we said goodbye to Cantor Bolts, and we welcome to our community Cantor Krieger. A change in cantors always means changes in the way services are conducted and the music that will be used. While all cantors know many of the same melodies, each cantor is an artist who uses the music to “paint” a musical canvass that is our liturgy. Music is an art form and every cantor uses his or her voice to create a work of art. What makes this even more interesting is that Cantor Krieger was the cantor at Temple Beth Sholom before the merger (ten years ago). Many in our congregation do not know his music or how he wielded his art to inspire prayer in our sanctuary. Just as Beth Sholom B’nai Israel is not the same congregation that it was twenty years ago, Cantor Krieger has also grown more experienced over the years and has added to his musical palette new melodies for us to consider. One thing I do know is that different members will react differently to the changes. Some may be angry as their favorite tunes are replaced. Some of us will request that familiar tunes be included in the rotation of music that Cantor Krieger will develop. Some will find the new music interesting and enjoyable and accept the changes without any further concerns. My only request is to remember that a work of art is not created in just one or two sessions. It is only with the passage of time that the beauty of what Cantor Krieger brings will become apparent. If we immerse ourselves in his music, we will, together, create beautiful services and spiritual moments here in our sanctuary. Let us welcome Cantor Krieger to our home and together let us create liturgical harmony.

Words from the President

Please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] or at 860-657-9951.

You may have heard that I was the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs’ Connecticut Valley Region’s Ma’asim Tovim honoree. The recognition was presented at the FJMC’s International Convention, which was held in Toronto in July. About 350 men from the U.S. and Canada attended the event along with many spouses (including Sue!). Since it is fresh in my mind, I would like to share some recollections:

• One panel featured leaders from the Conservative Movement: Chancellor Arnie Eisen of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Rabbi Ellen Wolintz-Fields of the Women’s League, Rabbi Philip Scheim, former president of the Rabbinical Assembly, and Rabbi Andy Shugerman of the FJMC. I found their remarks interesting, yet unremarkable. There is a clear understanding that we need to change, but (and perhaps because of lack of time), I didn’t hear a call for anything immediate or dramatic. Of the four, Rabbi Ellen stood out the most in terms of calling for change. Among her comments were to use more technology to bring people together.

• Rabbi Daniel Cohen of Stanford provided a motivational keynote address based on his book “What Will They Say About You When You Are Gone?: Creating a Life of Legacy.” Among his key messages was that we all can create “Elijah moments.” We can play a role making someone else’s life a little better.

• The FJMC launched a mental health initiative aimed at raising awareness and addressing issues surrounding addiction. The group devoted one afternoon to the issue, and engaged Rabbi Mark Borovitz and Harriet Roseeto, a husband and wife team (with very interesting back-stories) who founded Beit T’shuvah, a residential addiction treatment center, congregation and educational institute in Los Angeles.

• I spent some time with Irwin Harris, a Ma’asim Tovim honoree and a board member of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Irwin also presented his personal and congregational experience during their horrific Shabbat morning last October as well as their experience since that time. The presentation captivated the audience, many of whom wore black “Stop the Hate” shirts with the Steelmark logo (better known as the Pittsburgh Steelers emblem).

In addition to Jewish geography, a lot of learning happened outside the official programs. While we may differ in size and geography, our congregations share many of the same challenges and concerns.

On that last point, I am often reminded that our congregation has many things of which we should be proud. While we have opportunities to improve our programs and services, we shouldn't overlook some of the wonderful ones that we already offer.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Phil Margolis, President

Tisha B’Av Saturday, August 10, 2019, 8:30 pm

Tisha B'Av is a somber fast day commemorating a number of calamities that have occurred in Jewish

history on this day, primarily the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. Over the years,

many other disasters have fallen on and near this day and have been added to the list of events that we mourn

on Tisha B'Av. The observance of Tisha B'Av is similar to that of Yom Kippur in that eating, drinking, makeup, and leather-

soled shoes are all prohibited on this day. In addition, Tisha B'Av observance incorporates rituals associated

with mourning, including sitting on a low seat or on the floor. It is customary on Tisha B'Av to recite Eicha, the

Book of Lamentations, the Biblical book of laments for the destruction of the First Temple.

At our Tisha B'Av evening service at BSBI, we hold a short Maariv service followed by the reading of the Book of Lamentations by the congregation. If you would like to read, please

contact Cantor Krieger. Everybody is welcome to join. We invite you to join us in our quiet

and traditional observance of Tisha

B'Av this year, at 8:30 pm on

August 10th.

To All Our Members

Caring for each other is one of the most important goals that we have in our congregation. It is vital that every member knows that all of us will be there for them in their time of joy or their time of sorrow. There are just some times in Judaism that we must rely on the hearts of others to help us through the difficult moments in life.

Daily Minyan is really the heartbeat of our congregation. Every evening, we gather to check in with those who are mourning, to show how much we care for those with whom we daven and to show our support for our community. Minyan is a certified miracle. Every day we need ten adults to show up. It does not matter what happened last night nor what tomorrow will bring. The fact that ten or more come in the evening is never a sure bet and the fact that we make the minyan almost every day is to see one of God’s miracles.

We do need your help. Can you help keep our minyan miracle going? By committing to attend minyan on one, two, three or four nights a month, you can make a huge difference. The time commitment is small, just a half hour, but the difference you can make can change a life.

When we are called to jury duty by the courts, we are annoyed but we understand that our judicial system depends on our participation and so, in spite of the inconvenience, we attend with the hope that if (God forbid) we are ever on trial, there will be those who will answer the call to bring us justice.

Jewry Duty is very similar. We all take our turns each month so that every person in the community will have a minyan to say Kaddish on the day of their yahrzeit or during their days of mourning. Even if you are not one of the first ten to enter the chapel, your presence is a gift to mourners and to our community as well. We invite you to be a part of this important and essential part of synagogue life. You can feel the appreciation as soon as you walk in the door.

We thank you for your participation.

RLWRS Update

If you are planning an event, you MUST contact Judy to

coordinate Dave and other staff. Your cooperation is

greatly appreciated and will help

alleviate confusion.

https://www.facebook.com/ myshul/

Now is the time for all interested parents to send in their registration forms for their students so we can plan for the upcoming year. If you know any interested parents, friends, neighbors, or other potential members please contact me ASAP. Feel free to call the synagogue or access the registration forms on myshul.org under the education tab, then click on RLWRS registration forms.

Our first day of school will be Sunday, September 8th. We are eagerly planning to see our friends, meet new staff, resume our learning and wrap up with “A Taste of Honey” starting at 11:30 with a barbeque, farmers market, face painting, and lots more activities. What better way could we have to start a sweet New Year? Thanks to Ilene O’Neil for organizing this annual event open to all. I would like to personally thank Rebecca Rumbo, Debbie Benblatt, Jordana Benblatt, Maddy Turk, Bea

Brodie, Merle Cohen, Steve Cohen, Sarah Poutre, Stacey Poutre, Sally Ivaldi, Sandi Phair, Ilene O'Neill, Michelle Konigsburg, Carol Alter, Dave Alter and apologize to anyone else I forgot. It truly took a village of phenomenal helpers to organize all the craft materials, texts, games, audio/video, school library, classrooms, school office, etc. While I am grateful that I will never need to order any school supplies, and there are some very useful materials, they had not been sorted, organized or inventoried. Now, teachers will know what we have and where it is, and be able to use them in making lessons come alive. I have been working on this seriously huge project since December. CJEL (Commission on Jewish Education and Leadership) is an umbrella organization that supports all the area religious schools. I attended their recent meeting and was able to network with other school directors and stockpile a list of helpful ideas. This will be ongoing throughout the school year. Federation honored Emma Finer at their annual meeting as our madrich (aide) of the year based on my nomination for her initiative, caring, and leadership skills. No teacher aide had been nominated by BSBI in the past 10 years. The education committee continues to spend long hours working thoughtfully on a myriad of topics including how to grow the school and by extention the synagogue, teacher contracts, parent and staff handbooks, a creative and fiscally responsible budget, etc. Feel free to add your input and please explore ways you can be involved.

BSBI Community

Thank you to the BSBI community for your caring and kindnesses during our

mourning period.

Saul Nesselroth and family

Dear BSBI Community, It has been my honor and my pleasure to serve as your cantor for the past two years. I am grateful for all of the relationships I have built here, and I will miss being part of this community. Thanks to all of you for welcoming me and my family and for sharing your voices and your lives with me. Special thanks to Rabbi Konigsburg for being the best clergy partner I could have asked for. Michael, Julia, and I will be making our new home in Rockville, Maryland, where I will be serving as the Associate Cantor/Music Director at B'nai Israel Congregation. We are looking forward to being closer to our families and friends and are excited for this next step on our journey. I wish you all the best in the future, and may this community continue to thrive.

Rabbi Richard Plavin Library Corner David Alter, Librarian

For the history buffs in our congregation, the library is featuring two historical books this month: The Jewish War by Josephus and To the End of the Earth: a history of the crypto-Jews of New Mexico by Stanley M. Hordes.

The Jewish War Flavius Josephus (a.k.a. Joseph ben Matityahu) was a Jew who grew up in Jerusalem at the beginning of the Common Era. He was well educated, knowing both Jewish texts and the Greek language (although his Greek grammar was faulty). During the Great Revolt from 66-73 CE, Josephus served as a general of the Galilee. When the Roman army overcame his forces, Josephus and 40 compatriots fled to a cave. They agreed to commit suicide. Josephus fixed the lots so that his name would come out last. After the others killed themselves, Josephus convinced the remaining fighter to surrender with him. As a prisoner of the Romans, Josephus volunteered to write the history of the Great Revolt. General (later Emperor) Vespasian agreed. In The Jewish War, Josephus thus provided the Romans with a first-hand account of the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE. It must be emphasized that Josephus was writing for Vespasian - he was also writing from Rome - so his work is definitely biased. He mentions several times in his Greek writings that he created an Aramaic version of the events as well, but unfortunately, it is not extant.

To the End of the Earth: a history of the crypto-Jews of New Mexico The author, while working as New Mexico State Historian heard stories of Hispanics who lit candles on Friday night and abstained from eating pork. Hordes realized that these practices might very well have been passed down through the centuries from early crypto-Jewish settlers in New Spain. After extensive research and hundreds of interviews, Hordes concluded that there was, in New Mexico and the Southwest, a Sephardic legacy derived from the converso community of Spanish Jews. In To the End of the Earth, Hordes explores the remarkable story of crypto-Jews and the tenuous preservation of Jewish rituals and traditions in Mexico and New Mexico over the past five hundred years. He follows the crypto-Jews from their Jewish origins in medieval Spain and Portugal to their efforts to escape persecution by migrating to the New World and settling in the far reaches of the northern Mexican frontier.

Both books can be found on the display shelf.

Thank you from Leket

Leket Israel received the Sisterhood Beth Sholom B'nai Israel’s donation for

$2,900. Our sincere thanks again for the generous support.

I thought this may interest you and provide a glimpse of some of those benefitting

from your support of our food rescue and distribution activities.

Through 3 Tel Aviv based non profit organizations, La Sova, Sela/Pesia’s

Kitchen and LOFT/Otzma ve Koach Leket Israel is providing a daily hot meal to 510

primarily adult men that are in various stages of homelessness and

rehabilitation. The food has been rescued from hotels, army bases and corporate

cafeterias in the Gush Dan and Sharon regions.

If we take LOFT/Otzma ve Koach as an example, we are providing a daily hot meal

to 140 men living in their 7 shelters in the Tel Aviv area. Each hostel cares for a

different population group at need, those who have recently been released from

prison, those with a history of mental illness, and those with a history of substance

abuse. Some of the residents are short term (the homeless who are given a bed, a

shower and meal) and some are going through rehab. In addition to those who

are live in, LOFT/Otzma ve Koach is also feeding those coming off the street for a

meal. Overall we are providing LOFT/Otzma ve Koach with over 210 meals a day.

Our thanks again to the Sisterhood for the support.

Paul Leiba

VP Resource Development, Leket Israel

The thank-you note to the side explains beautifully the wonderful work that is being accomplished by Leket Israel, one of the three organizations that benefited equally from your generous donations to our recent Pesach Project. The other two organizations were Mazon, which feeds the hungry in the United States, and, of course, our Sisterhood, which helps our congregation. I encourage you to view the inspirational YouTube link at the bottom. Please also be aware that you can contact Leket for a tour whenever you visit Israel. Sisterhood appreciates the generosity of all of you who participated in our Pesach Project this year! We also appreciate the hard work of Lisa Plavin and her committee for making this project a success for the third year in a row. Thanks to Lisa, the committee, and all of you for bringing this project to fruition! Judy Meyer President, BSBI Sisterhood

Her farce “An Impeccable Larceny” is published through Samuel French and has been translated into Dutch.

In January, she was one of five playwrights invited to participate in Clamour Theatre Company’s “Clay & Water Playwrights Retreat” in Green Cove Springs, Florida. She was also the 2019 recipient of the Robert J. Pickering Award for Playwriting Excellence.

Her diverse acting background includes indie and student film, improvisational and scripted comedy, corporate projects, commercials, voiceovers and murder mysteries.

A voting member of the Dramatists Guild and an award-winning journalist, she is also the author of “Super-Charge Your Staff Meetings: 52 ways to create fun, meaningful, memorable meetings that your employees will love,” a Grand Award winner from the Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX).

Sisterhood Speaks Continued

Knit & Kvetch Meet us in the BSBI library on Tuesday, August 13, at 1:30 pm for another session of Knit and Kvetch.

If you are making an afghan for us please make it at least 36 x 48 inches.

Remember we can always use yarn or monetary donations to continue our mitzvah. It doesn't have to be a huge amount, $5.00 goes a long way towards buying yarn. We do appreciate all donations of yarn, however please no wool. Our items need to be machine washable so we can only accept 100% acrylic.

Please make sure that all donation checks are made out to BSBI Sisterhood and marked "Knit and Kvetch" on the memo line. If they are be left in the BSBI office, please ask for them to put the checks in the Sisterhood box. Any questions call me at 860-649-6551 or at [email protected].

Hadassah/Sisterhood Book Group - Monday September 9

Our next gathering is planned for 7:30 on September 9 at BSBI. We will discuss The Weight of Ink, by Rachel Kadish. Books will be placed on reserve for BSBI at the Mary Cheney Library.

'WINNER OF A NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD A USA TODAY BESTSELLER

"A gifted writer, astonishingly adept at nuance, narration, and the politics of passion."—Toni Morrison

Set in London of the 1660s and of the early twenty-first century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city; and Helen Watt, an ailing

historian with a love of Jewish history.

When Helen is summoned by a former student to view a cache of newly discovered seventeenth-century Jewish documents, she enlists the help of Aaron Levy, an American graduate student as impatient as he is charming, and embarks on one last project: to determine the identity of the documents' scribe, the elusive "Aleph."

Electrifying and ambitious, The Weight of Ink is about women separated by centuries—and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order to reconcile the life of the heart and mind.'

Happy reading! Maxine Lerman Myrna Spector

Brotherhood Corner Carl Mandell, Brotherhood President

This past year has been very successful for the BSBI Brotherhood. Our monthly breakfast meetings were well-attended as were a number of our events including Keeper of the Flame, our annual Abitz Angel Memorial Golf Tournament, Schnapps and Steaks in the Sukkah, Brotherhood Shabbat and our Yom HaShoah program to mention a few. July 1-4 was the National Brotherhood Convention in Toronto and one of our members, Phil Margolis, received the Ma’asim Tovim Award representing all that he has done for our Brotherhood and for our synagogue community. Finally, I am proud to state that the BSBI Brotherhood is the recipient of the Quality Club Award

Special thanks to Spin Zucker, Jack Steigelfest and Glenn Hauer for heading up our Golf Tournament. Thanks as well to all the others who supported this event either with their labor or with their golfing skills. There are just too many names to list!

I am happy to pass on the gavel to our new Brotherhood President,

Glenn Blumenstein.

Our board has changed slightly and will consist of:

I would like to thank everyone who has supported Brotherhood for the past two years during my time as president, especially our Executive Board members who stepped in to keep things running while I was away for most of May and June enjoying the birth of our grandson.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable summer!

We encourage donations to this wonderful fund so that others might experience a meaningful Shabbat together during Shiva.

Leave a Jewish Legacy

The BSBI Endowment Board of Trustees has periodically published Bulletin articles about Legacy Giving and our collective obligations to sustain, nurture and grow current programs and institutions for ourselves and for future generations. As we move from 2018 to 2019 in the secular calendar, the BSBI Endowment Board of Trustees would like to thank our prior, present and potential donors and supporters. Prior Bulletin articles have discussed our col-laboration with the Jewish Community Foundation. This collaboration allows us to offer charitable annuities and charitable remainder trusts as other options for our donors. The Jewish Community Foundation can also provide continuity of philanthropy to support Jewish causes in the future. Our working relationship with the Jewish Community Foundation has never been better and will continue to strengthen as we moved forward together. The New Year is an opportune time to review some of the ways you can give to the BSBI Endowment. It is also a good time to be certain that your Will reflects your wishes and values with regards to the disposition of your assets at the time of death. A bequest to the BSBI Endowment can be made in your Will either as a spe-cific dollar amount or as a percentage of assets. The BSBI Endowment may be the beneficiary of an existing paid up life insurance policy. Alternatively, a new life insurance policy can be purchased with the BSBI Endow-ment named as the beneficiary. Under certain circumstances the premiums for such a policy may be deducti-ble to the extent provided by law. Loved ones can be memorialized with gifts to the Endowment. In the past we have reviewed the use of QCDs [Qualified Charitable Distributions] from IRAs, Keogh, 403B or 401K plans if the owner of the assets is over 70 1/2 years of age. It is also possible to leave IRA assets to the Endowment at the time of death regardless of age. The residual of an estate can also be bequeathed to the Endowment. During the last calendar year the BSBI Endowment has provided periodic educational opportunities about charitable giving and how you can help us sustain the institutions and programs that have helped enrich Jew-ish life east of the river. The tax regulations are complex and in constant flux. If you are considering leaving a legacy or retirement as-sets to the Endowment Foundation of BSBI please reach out to Jeff Wasser [[email protected]] or Roy Filkoff [[email protected]] or [email protected]. Sincerely, Jeff Wasser, MD President of the BSBI Endowment

WE NEED YOUR HELP !

We are updating our sparse calling list for evening minyan. Our mourners count on all of us to provide the communal mourning requirement of a minyan to get through tough days. Can we count on you to add your name to the list in the chapel for evening minyan? It is not only the

right thing to do, it’s a mitzvah. If you can help out, especially if you live less than 10 minutes or 5 miles away,

Please call Rabbi Konigsburg at 860-643-9563 Ext. 101 or email [email protected] Thank you

BSBI has been given the opportunity to accept do-nations of vehicles through a partnership with Vehicles For Charity to process donated vehi-

cles. Consider donating your unwanted vehi-cle in support of BSBI. It is easier and faster than selling it on your own, and you may qualify for a tax deduction! Donors say it is a satisfying way to make a larger donation than they normally could. Other vehicles accepted by this program in-clude: unwanted car, truck, boat, motorcycle, RV or recreational vehicles. For more information go to: https://www.vehiclesforcharity.org

We have now made the switch to the new Siddur Lev Shalem! Similar to the Machzor Lev Shalem we use on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Siddur Lev Shalem includes informational side notes and extra readings on each page to help everyone get more out of Shabbat te-phillot (prayer). We are now offering opportunities to dedicate these siddurim in honor of people or events in our lives or in memory of loved ones. A siddur can be dedicated for just $50 a book. If you would like to see a copy of the new siddur, they are available for inspection at the synagogue.

Beth Olam Cemetery

The lock at Beth Olam has been replaced and now

no key is required. The combination is 1818.

There is a reminder near the lock in case you have

forgotten the combination.

Please follow the directions below to use the new

lock:

• The lock is located under the black weatherproof cover

• Pull the lock over the black weatherproof cover

• Turn the number to 1818-line them up with the red line

• Lock will pull apart

• When done, reattach the cable to lock it

• Turn at least one number to secure lock

• Replace the lock under the black weatherproof cover
