CLS BOARD MEETING REMINDER

The Board of Trustees of Congregation Lev

Shalom will meet on Tuesday, August 20th,

at 6p.m. at the synagogue. Members of the

Congregation are welcome to attend. Please

advise Paul Cohen ([email protected]

or 267-251-6473) if there are matters that you

would like the Board to consider or if you would

like an advance copy of the agenda for the

meeting.

Please be aware that non-board members will

be asked to step out of the meeting should the

Board go into executive session to address

matters deemed to be of a confidential nature

by the Board, such as personnel issues or mat-

ters dealing with specific members.

OUR STORIES—PAUL COHEN

At our July 2019 Board Meeting,

CLS wonderful marketing

"guru", Karin Eberhard, focused

the Board's efforts on telling

"our story" on social media and

through other marketing

opportunities. She asked us to

recall what were the

circumstances or people that

initially prompted each of our joining and

participating in the Synagogue. There is

something powerful in sharing these stories with

others, and potentially could make the difference

of new members considering or actually joining. I

thought about this after the meeting, and easily

recalled the circumstances and people that

prompted Shari and I to join CLS.

When Shari and I saw the real possibility of

relocating from Southeastern Pennsylvania in

2015 during a visit here around Labor Day, we

checked all of the boxes on our first visit here.

One of those boxes was, of course, stopping into

the local synagogue. When Google Maps

announced that we'd reached our destination, we

thought that perhaps we'd entered the address

incorrectly, but after looking more carefully, we

saw the posted calendar and street signs, which

confirmed that we were, indeed, in the right place.

The small building told us this was likely a much

smaller community than our previous two

congregations of 1200 and 600 families. Still, we

reached out to Rabbi Mindie via email, and had

lunch with her on our next visit to Flagstaff in

November. During lunch, she suggested that she

would arrange for us to be invited to a Shabbat

dinner. Within a day, we heard from Ron and

Linda Borkan, who invited us to their home for

Shabbat dinner that very weekend, along with

Helene Mann and Steve Grayson. What better

way to find out so much more about life in

Flagstaff and Temple Heichal Baoranim than with

great food and conversation from these four

generous people. They made us feel welcome,

and wanted us to seriously consider joining their

synagogue. This was a very welcoming and caring

community they said, and the four of them truly

embodied that.

In following up with Karin's request, I ask

everyone reading this to recall the how and why

they joined CLS. You can email your story to Karin

('KARIN EBERHARD' [email protected]) or

myself ('Paul Cohen'[email protected]).

Also, you can let me know if you want to share

your story in a future newsletter or permit Karin to

post it on our Facebook page.

Rebecca Sturm has complet-

ed her first year at Barrett,

the Honors College at Arizona

State University. She is pursu-

ing a B.A. in Global Health as

well as a certificate in Health

Care Delivery and Policy. This

past year, Becca has actively

participated in her campus

Hillel, been involved in research in partnership

with the Mayo clinic, competed in her school's

club triathlon team, as well as served as a

Barrett tour guide. She just completed a two-

month internship in Jerusalem working at a

nonprofit that assists English-speakers in navi-

gating the Israeli healthcare system.

This upcoming year, Becca is excited to an-

nounce she was selected to serve on the Hillel

International Student Cabinet. In this role, she

will be directly working with Hillel Interna-

tional's leadership team, offering advice, opin-

ions, and perspectives from her Jewish experi-

ence at Arizona State University. Collaborating

with a richly diverse cohort, they will be acting

as a vehicle to connect Jewish peers from over

550 Hillels across the country to one another.

Becca and her family have been members of

Congregation Lev Shalom (previously Heichal

Baoranim) for over 25 years.
