Reddam House Preparatory, Constantia Volume 02:4 2015 (23 - 29 October 2015) From the Headmistress Dear Parents Staff News It is with regret that I have to announce that Mr Brett Pearce will be leaving Reddam House at the end of 2015 after 10 years of loyal service as a teacher of Mathematics and a Deputy. Brett has been appointed as the Headmaster of Forries School in Rondebosch and I know that you will join me in congratulating him. He is an outstanding teacher and a valued colleague who will be missed by us all. We are also sad to lose Ms Mandy Webb (Grade 1). Although she has only been at Reddam House for 2015, she has made her presence felt through her excellent teaching and as a colleague. She is not leaving us altogether and will still be available to do locums at Reddam House when we need her. Ms Candice de Villiers (Grade 3) has decided to spread her wings and teach abroad next year. Candices dedication in the classroom and her commitment on the sports fields will be missed. Social Media Please continue to be vigilant with your children’s interactions on social media. Sometimes poor choices are made and the consequences can be devastating for all concerned. Nasty messages, ill-advised photographs and videos, foul language and bullying behaviour are being experienced more and more amongst the children of today and we as the adults need to continue to guide and discuss these issues with them. Intermediate Phase Extra Drama There will be no extra drama on Mondays starting as of next week. Extra drama will only be held on Wednesdays due to so few students participating in it each day. Drama will therefore only be offered from 2:45pm - 3:30pm for Grade 4 and 5 on Wednesdays and 3:45pm - 4:30pm for Grade 6 and 7 on Wednesdays. Due to the commencement of exams, the last extra drama lesson will take place on

From the Headmistress Dear Parents Staff News It is with regret that I have to announce that Mr Brett Pearce will be leaving Reddam House at the end of 2015 after 10 years of loyal service as a teacher of Mathematics and a Deputy. Brett has been appointed as the Headmaster of Forries School in Rondebosch and I know that you will join me in congratulating him. Wednesday, 4 November 2015. We apologise if some of the students cannot make the Wednesday slot and will hope to see those students in Drama again next year. Exam Booklets Grade 5, 6 and 7 The Grade 5 students received there “What to Study” Exam Booklets this week. The Grade 5 and7 students will find these have been posted through Google classroom by the teachers. They are also available on the Reddam App along with the November examination timetable. Grade 3, 6 and 7 International Benchmark Tests This week has been a busy week for our students in Grade 3, 6 and 7. They have been writing the International Benchmark Tests.

The IBT is an international standard assessment programme which provides schools with quality data and reporting, to help accurately measure student performance, identify areas of strength and weakness and monitor the effectiveness of school programmes.

Schools receive a range of quality reports including: individual student reports that measure and compare performance and highlight individual skills, strengths and weaknesses, group reports that allow schools to rank and compare student performance and identify individual, class and school-wide strengths and weaknesses school, regional and international comparison reports to compare and benchmark student and school performance, recognition of student performance, through Certificates of Honour, Distinction and Participation. The International Benchmark Tests aim to reward and recognise student achievement. The top achievers in each grade are awarded a Certificate of Honour. The subsequent 5% of students in each subject are awarded a Certificate of Distinction.

The English test is based on reasoning and thinking skills which underpin the subject specific content domain. In English the skills assessed are locating information, inferring, predicting, drawing conclusions and reasoning.

The Mathematics test is based on problem solving skills and thinking skills which underpin the subject specific domain. In Mathematics these skills include interpreting data, inferring, predicting, drawing conclusions, reasoning and problem-solving. The Science test is based on problem solving and thinking skills which underpin the subject specific content domain. In Science these skills include observing and measuring, interpreting data, inferring, predicting, drawing conclusions, reasoning and problem-solving.

In the last two years we have had some excellent results with the IBT tests. This confirms that we are achieving many of the necessary IEB benchmarks against both National and International Schools. Many of our students have already been issued with the Certificates of Distinction and Certificates of Honour from the IEB. These results will only be available in the early 2016 due to the wait for the International schools to write these tests.

2016 Class Lists This is one of the many tasks which a school handles at year end. I have already begun to receive requests from parents and my answer is always the same – I take note of requests but can never make a promise.

Page 3: Reddam House Preparatory, Constantia Tal… ·  · 2015-10-23Reddam House Preparatory, ... The Science test is based on problem solving and thinking skills which underpin the subject

The process is a long and complicated one taking into account academic strengths, combinations of children which do not work well in an academic setting, the needs of each child which must be met by teachers and, last of all, friendships. The teachers meet in grades with me and many hours are spent compiling the lists bearing all the above in mind. I appeal to parents to trust our professional judgement and decisions and not to make requests for changes to be made. Whilst friendships are important, the focus in the classroom needs to be academia, and while your children may beg you to ask for them to be with their friends, this is not always the best thing for academic progress. Jacques Kallis Foundation / Sporting Chance Junior Schools Cricket Clinic – Report by Gabi-Lee van der Westhuizen It was a wonderful afternoon of cricket at Wynberg Boys’ High School where the Jacques Kallis Foundation in partnership with Sporting Chance, hosted a Junior Schools Cricket Clinic at the, now retired South African cricketer’s oval. Jacques Kallis alongside WBHS headmaster, Keith Richardson, walked down to the JK oval which had been beautifully tunneled by all the participants of the event. The headmaster introduced Jacques Kallis, and explained to the audience what made him the best cricketer in the world. A group of U11, U12 and U13 boys from Reddam joined many other schools in learning from the world class All-rounder. Jacques spent

Page 5: Reddam House Preparatory, Constantia Tal… ·  · 2015-10-23Reddam House Preparatory, ... The Science test is based on problem solving and thinking skills which underpin the subject

his time at the clinic sharing his experiences and wisdom of being a cricketer, from his junior days up until his retirement. A net session was conducted by JK Foundation and Sporting Chance coaches, as Jacques made his rounds through the nets. The aspiring youngsters received many tips, including how to play the perfect cover drive, emphasizing footwork and balance when batting, the correct bowling lines and lengths and the importance of spending long hours in the nets. He carried on mentioning the importance of discipline, hard work and many sacrifices that play a huge part of training and performance. He commented that “cricket is a gentleman’s game”! All the young cricketers were inspired and motivated in a moment that they will never forget. Our very own Ashton Miller won the lucky draw, winning a cricket bat with a special message and signed by Jacques Kallis on the spot. It was definitely a day of excitement and joy for our boys. A day that they will remember forever, taking all the inspiration and striving toward reaching their dreams.

Bread Reminder – Westlake Emmanuel Educare School We would very much appreciate our families assisting us in the following charity drive to assist the Westlake Emmanuel Educare School on our doorstep. The principal of the school, Ms Eleanor Lawrence, would be most grateful if every week we assist with the supply of white and brown sliced bread loaves. Every Tuesday this term each Grade will have a turn to supply bread. The bread must be taken to the classrooms and will then be delivered by Mrs Elliot-Jones to this deserving school. Ms Lawrence then freezes the bread to use daily until the fresh bread arrives the following week. It would be wonderful if you feel you would like to add a container of Peanut Butter, Marmite, Jam or Anchovette. We thank you in advance for your kind assistance. The roster will be as follows:

Grade 3 Tuesday, 27 October 2015

Grade 4 Tuesday, 03 November 2015

Grade 5 Tuesday, 10 November 2015
