We’ve got a lot to be proud of on the Coast-side — from the natu-ral beauty of the ocean

After all, some prefer thick crust, some prefer thin. But what are your favorites? When you have guests, where do you take them? When you

go for a hike, what’s your favorite trail? This was not multiple choice. We did not have voters pick from an edited list. This was all on your own, and we tallied every last ballot — more than 1,200 of them! Some of the winners were landslides. Many were decided by the slimmest of margins. Bay Book is an oasis for Coastside readers

Bay Book Company is the kind of place where you can learn about helicopters and horses or pick up the latest by Brian Herbert. In fact,

fans of the Dune series author recently met him at one of the many regular author events held in the Strawflower Village institution.

Is it any wonder that Bay Book Company is once again taking a Readers Choice award?

The store has a cozy, homey feel. Aisles are clear but the place is packed. A corner of the store is devot-

ed to cigar smokers and tobacco pipes are kept over the cash register. The walls are lined

with an eclectic mix of memorabilia both literary and local.

And if you have a reader on your shopping list, he might appreciate one of several autographed editions that are signed during author visits. The store often has signed copies of books by such luminaries as James Lee

Burke and Jojo Moyes.Owner Kevin Magee smiles at the no-

tion that readers – both his and the Re-view’s – find what they are looking for in his

longstanding store.“I just want to say thanks to all the customers who

have supported us all these years,” said Magee, who first opened Bay Books in Shoreline Station in 1978.

It’s been in its current location for nearly 30 years. “It’s a real testament to the people who work with me at Bay Book.”

Favorite Coach

2014

SPOTLIGHT

Communication key to coach’s successFor Rick Campbell, the key to being a good

coach lies in a good relationship with the ath-letes.

“That’s more important than the X’s and O’s,” he said.

Campbell should know. He’s been a coach for 27 years, mostly on the Coastside.

He’s coached high school baseball and Little League. As a teacher at Cunha Intermediate

School, he has guided volleyball players, basket-ball players and flag football players.

But more than the results of the hundreds if not thousands of games he has coached, he cherishes the friendships he has maintained the over years.

Perhaps it’s the way he talks to his players when he teaches them on the finer points of a

jump shot, or maybe it’s the way he puts it into perspective after a strikeout. He’s earned the respect of the players and their

parents; that’s obvious as he is this year’s choice among readers for Favorite Coach.

Campbell knows the importance of being a role model. In fact, he’s still in contact with the first group of athletes that he ever coached.

“My door is always open,” Campbell said. “I am al-ways approachable for the kids.”

2014

SPOTLIGHT

Jersey Joe’s scores a touchdown

On just about any other day, the TVs are on just as background noise while customers at Jersey Joe’s talk about their lives and the issues of the

day over a hamburger. It’s different on Sundays.

The eight TVs in the dining room are tuned to every NFL football game that is being played. As for the customers, conversations deal with only the games those folks are paying particu-lar attention to.

The games end, the customers get up, take away their baskets and cups, place the gar-

bage in the garbage cans and put the baskets near by, where they can be cleaned up for the

next customers.Jersey Joe’s is the place to be to watch any sport-

ing event, according to Half Moon Bay Review readers who responded the Reader Choice Awards.

Jersey Joe’s was picked the Favorite Place to Watch Sports. The eatery was also picked as the place with the Fa-

vorite Burger and the Favorite Restaurant for Kids. It finished second for Favorite American Restaurant and third for Favor-ite Place for a Beer.

Owner Don Godshall listens to the wants of the customers, making sure a particular game is on.

“I run around with the remote,” Godshall said. The restaurant has three big screen TVS, one 55-footer and

two 65-footers, and eight smaller screens. The big screens get top priority.

“Those are reserved for the 49ers, the Raiders and the Phil-adelphia Eagles,” Godshall said. “I’m from Philadelphia.”

Football Sundays are a fun time there, according Godshall.“When you hear someone scream, you wonder what hap-

pened in what game,” he said.Any sport can be seen on the TV from baseball to golf to

soccer. Business was strong when the America’s Cup was on.“It’s always fun here,” he said. “We get a lot of people here.”

Big-wave icon a hit with surfing fansF or many surf fans, a visit to the Mav-

ericks Surf Shop in Princeton isn’t so much a shopping trip as it is a pil-

grimage to Mecca. The surf shop is hallowed ground for

many surf enthusiasts, both for the qual-ity of its products and its iconic owner and board craftsman, Jeff Clark.

Since moving his shop to its location at Pillar Point Harbor in 2010, Clark says he’s been insistent about only a few things. He started his business to sell only “what he knows.” That includes his own designs of

longboards, shortboards, guns, fun guns and stand-up paddleboards in all man-

ner of shapes and sizes, for rent or sale. “My business is shaping surfboards

to ride this Everest of a wave,” he said. “People know what to expect what they walk in our door.”

The store is also the home base for Clark’s own Mavericks line of clothing,

which features everything from T-shirts to inflatable life-vests. For many, sporting

the Mavericks clothing is like a banner of pride for the Coastside.

The coming months, big-wave season, mark the busiest time of the year for the Princeton shop. For Clark it conjures up special memories. This is his 40th year of surfing at Mavericks!

“It’s been a long road, man,” he said. “It’s been awesome.”

Coastside Hope takes pride in helping neighbors For nearly four decades, Coastside Hope has served as a critical

resource for residents in need of food, clothing and other es-sentials.

More than 16 percent of the coast’s population, including low-in-come citizens, disabled residents and those in need of emergency as-sistance, utilized the nonprofit’s services last year. Besides providing food for residents in need, Coastside Hope also offers resources such as weekly citizenship classes and rental assistance.

Coastside Hope Community Development Director Keith Terry says the Readers Choice recognition as the favorite nonprofit is

a reflection of the organization’s mission.“Our mission is neighbors helping neighbors,” Terry said. “I think people chose us because they identify

with that mission. Coastsiders have a good heart and want to help people.”

Coastside Hope was founded in 1976 under the name Coastside Opportunity Center and used to provide transportation for Coastsiders in addi-tion to safety net services. After another organi-zation took up transit services, Coastside Oppor-

tunity Center shifted its focus almost exclusively to providing vital resources like food and clothing.

In 2006, the name changed to Coastside Hope to re-flect this primary focus on safety net services.

The organization is reliant on contributions of time, mon-ey and other resources from fellow coastal citizens. Terry says

local donations make up 20 percent of Coastside Hope’s annu-al budget, and more than 300 volunteers give more than 5,000

hours of service each year.“Satisfaction comes from helping people who need help,” Terry

said.“We may have been given the honor this year, but we can’t do it

without the other organizations,” Terry said. “It’s a safety net and I look at is as we’re each a rope in that net. You put us all together and you have a good, solid safety net on the coast.”

Hop Dogma pours an always-fresh experienceHop Dogma has found the winning recipe for what

a truly great neighborhood pub can be. On almost any night, the barroom is packed

with a lively crowd of local blokes and neighbors. The atmosphere strikes a friendly vibe, the prices are rea-sonable and the staff knows your name.

But what’s really important is the beer — sessions, ales, IPAs, porters, stouts, saisons, hefeweizens and all the rest. Every pint is brewed right in the backroom in a small three-barrel tank that is like a drop in the buck-et compared to most breweries. But that small supply makes Hop Dogma unique because no single visit is quite the same. Testing out special hops varietals or oth-

er ingredients would be a risky challenge for large brewers. For Hop Dogma, it’s standard operat-

ing procedure. “On this scale you have a lot more room to experiment,” said owner and brewer

Dan Littlefield. “We’re making better and better beer all the time.”

Hop Dogma has come a long way since opening its doors last year, and the brewery has made a name for it-self. Pints of its beer are now served at

several bars around the Peninsula, and its selections headlined one night in this

year’s SF Beer Week festivities. Littlefield is even collaborating with his direct compe-

tition. The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is working with him on a session IPA for both bars to serve. Hop Dogma beer will also be featured at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, the pre-

miere beer-lover’s expo in the country. “I want to give a big thank you to everyone,” Littlefield

said. “We’re always trying to make this a better place. The people here are the best.”

SPOTLIGHT

Colorful history translates into favorite spot for sunset, romanceWith spectacular ocean views, fine dining for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, and

rumors of a resident ghost, the Moss Beach Distillery is a double winner as Readers Choice for favorite place to view the sunset and favorite romantic destination.

It all began as “Frank’s Place,” built by Frank Torres in 1927. With its proximity to San Fran-cisco, the politicians and silent movie stars of the day flocked there. A recent visitor was Frank’s grandson Frank Torres III, who shared stories of the past.

The scenic spot also had a dark side. During Prohibition, rumrunners’ boats hit the beach-es below the eatery. A brothel allegedly flourished in the little rooms downstairs. A hotel, set

up where the parking lot now stands, burned in the 1950s. In the 1930s, a young woman was allegedly murdered on the beach below the restaurant that we’ve known as the Moss Beach Distillery since the 1970s. The unfortunate murder victim lived on in legend as the “Blue Lady” haunting the eatery when her story hit television’s “Unsolved Mysteries” in the early 1990s and the restaurant incorporated an (electronic) ghostly young woman’s face randomly appearing in the ladies’ room mirror.

And Author Dashiell Hammett was a regular customer, and his story “The Girl with the Sil-ver Eyes” was allegedly written during visits to the restaurant.

Today, the Distillery features California coastal cuisine upstairs, and casual seating and a dog-friendly patio downstairs. Here, customers can soak in sunset views and dogs can enjoy items from the doggie menu such as burger patties or skirt steak “for the really good dogs,” says sales and marketing manager Mel Vega. “We take great pride in creating a space where dogs and dog lovers can come,” she added.

Aztec Gardens strives to make customers feel like familyIf you ask Aztec Gardens owner Daniel Padilla why he thinks his business garnered the

Readers Choice for gardeners, he won’t shy away from answering.“We are damn good,” Padilla said. “We care.”

Padilla has operated his landscape design business for 30 years, serving homes from Paci-fica to Pescadero and on the peninsula as well. He started off working at a now-closed Coast-side nursery, digging holes and planting, and he liked the experience enough to study environ-mental horticulture at the College of San Mateo. Padilla then started his own business and, with advice from mentors Eddie Andreini and Mel Mello along the way, hasn’t looked back.

Padilla attributes his success to the importance his business places on treating customers well.

“My customers are like family,” Padilla said. “I’ve seen my customers’ children from infancy, go through school into college, married and have children.”

Moss Beach resident Christine Mendonca attested to Aztec Gardens’ personal approach.“I’ve been a customer of Danny and his crew at Aztec Gardens for over 14 years,” Mendon-

ca said in an email. “They go above and beyond when I need it and treat me like family.”Whether the job is commercial or residential, big or small, Padilla takes pride in relating to

his customers and seeing the project at hand through their eyes.“We know what it is to own a home and business,” he said. “Our philosophy is take a little,

leave a little but do one fantastic job.”— Julia Reis

Photographer creates intimate connections with subjectsFor El Granada resident Tammy Trejo, voted Readers Choice for favorite Photographer

this year, the key to success with her Coastside Photography is simple: “I get up each morning and go to work and I’m excited about my work.”

She started Coastside Photography in 1986 on Kelly Avenue and has been at 731 Main St. since 1990. She does portraiture, with emphasis on families, either in her studio or in a variety of settings depending on the season. She’s on the beach during autumn or early winter, wood-ed or forest settings on foggy days or wildflower fields in springtime.

The foundation for all her work, she said, is “connection of families to nature and to one

another,” an element she makes palpable in her portraits. “There is a real magical transforma-tion that always happens during a shoot.”

She uses “a little bit of psychology” to get subjects to relax on shoots she times for early morning or sunset, which she calls “the sweet light” times.

Over her 28 years in business and an estimated 100 sittings per year, she has also managed to create two books of portraiture: “Infinite Goddess,” portraits of women embodying differ-ent goddess archetypes, and “The American goddess,” due for publication in October, which will include portraits of women honoring their heritages.

She credits husband Grant Walters, a local Realtor and musician, with support and encour-agement, and declares that, “My work is important because it allows people to participate in art and become subjects of art.”

Honesty is the only policy at Phil’s auto repairA trip to the car repair shop can be a trip down the rabbit hole for most drivers. Even if

you once knew how to change your own spark plugs or adjust the timing, you proba-bly don’t know how to tinker with your 21st century automobile.

Manager Jason Peters says Phil’s Tire Pros and Auto Repair earned this year’s Readers Choice for best auto repair because customers can trust that they are getting quality service at a fair price.

“I think it’s because we are honest,” he said. “We treat men and women the same and peo-ple can trust us.”

Phil’s has become an institution on the coast over 23 years in business. While “tires” are

right in the business name, they account for less than half of the work done at the Purissima Street location, Peters said. It’s a full-service auto repair facility with four service technicians.

The pros at Phil’s are capable of a wide variety of repairs. Last year, the business added new equipment necessary to recharge air conditioning units on hybrid vehicles. In fact, the occasional electric vehicle rolls in for new tires.

While change is constant in the car repair business, experience matters too. Owner Phil Holderbein, tire specialist Jim Farnham and Peters have a combined 100 years of automotive experience.

Phil’s Tire Pros and Auto Repair also won the Readers Choice award in 2012. Coastside drivers clearly know they can trust the pros at Phil’s.
