or the last few years, we have been featuring illustrations on the cover of this magazine. Fellow designer Mark Restani and I have been swapping off the drawing duties. And, for the most part, it has been a ton of fun. Proud of many, nonplussed

by some, downright embarrassed by a few, the biggest challenge for me is always the October issue — how to illustrate the energy, the hustle, the ‘orangeness’ of the Coastside at Halloween time without being trite or repetitive. The ideas were not only hard to come by, but would usually wait to arrive until just hours before deadline. Inspiration never seems to keep a schedule. ¶ This year we are trying something new. Inspired by the bounty of talented artists that use our fair coast as subject matter for their art, we thought it would be interesting to feature, on the cover, a different take of the Coastside as seen through the eyes of a dozen artists. Some of the artists live in the area, some will be from around California, or further — the beauty of the coast is appreciated by all! The point is that the Coastside is inspiring; for artists, for visitors, for those lucky enough to live or work here. This is a hats off to those who find beauty on the Coastside and take the time to interpret it in their art for the rest of us to enjoy. ¶ for this month’s magazine, our cover art was painted at Dunes Beach, looking across to the bluffs near the Sweetwood campground. I love the feel of the trail leading to the tangle of cypress trees — and the rust colored edges of the ice plant. I’ve revisited this spot again since Kim Lordier sent in the image. It’s no wonder she chose it. ¶ There is other artwork worth taking a look at in this issue. The inset is an image that Margaret Lindsey painted in response to the ordeal that the Wicks family has gone through. I hope you get a chance to read this inspirational story about courage and hope ... certainly something we can all use more of at the beginning of a new year.

“We certainly couldn’t do this by ourselves as a family unit,” said Scott Wicks, a videographer. “A lot of people stepped up.”

“It’s been very humbling to be so lovingly supported by so many,” said his wife, Dayna Wicks, a counselor and bodyworker in private practice who left work to take care of her daughter.

As they speak, older daughter Aliya, now 5, snuggles up to play with little sister Dyllan. At 18 months old, with a cheru-bic smile and sparkly blue eyes under a fringe of soft brown hair, Dyllan exudes calm friendliness and curiosity. Scars across her chest and tummy are the only reminders of odds she continues to beat.

Arriving without complications on Feb. 21, 2010, Dyllan Kianna Wicks spent six carefree weeks with her family before her doctor, concerned by her failure to gain weight, began a monitoring pro-gram.

But within three months, things had not improved, and one morning Dyl-lan showed increased sweating and dif-ficulty breathing. Her parents scooped her up and started for the local clinic but changed their minds and headed in-stead for the University of California, San Francisco emergency room.

Dyllan was rushed into intensive care where her parents were given her status: a literally one-in-a-million condition called left ventricular noncompaction cardiomiopathy.

In this genetic but nonhereditary condition, the left ventricle of her heart could not adequately pump blood to the rest of her body. The attending physician told the Wicks she probably would not make it through the night and called the hospital chaplain.

“It was like being hit with a fast-moving train,” her parents wrote in a statement about their experience. “We could barely keep our balance.”

But when Dyllan did make it through that hellish night, her parents set about learning their options. Only one seemed fea-sible: a heart transplant.

Less than two weeks later, Dyllan was transferred to the Lu-cile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, where she spent

the next nine months in intensive care. “She was flat on her back for so long that she missed a lot of

critical milestones,” said her mother. But she did not miss out on any love. Her mother or father,

other relatives or a neighbor, were with Dyllan 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“It was very important for us to keep someone there for emo-tional support for her,” said Scott. “The nurses got to know the changes in our shifts as well as we got to know theirs.”

On Aug. 6, 2010, Dyllan was put on the donor list. By late August, with her own heart failing, she had to have open-heart surgery to install two external heart pumps, known as “Berlin hearts.”

Medical staff checked them frequently to guard against blood clots. Twice the pumps had to be changed out, requiring Dyllan to be taken “offline” for a few minutes each time. But to doctors’ and her family’s amazement, no major damage was caused.

“Dyllan touched death more times than we care to remem-ber,” wrote her parents. “She ‘crashed’ and was ‘brought back’ many times by an amazing team of doctors. To their surprise she continued to hang in there.”

Her parents did the same, one minute at a time. “We were in emergency mode,” said Dayna. “One foot in front of the other, walking though a nightmare, hoping it would end soon.”

What kept the parents going was their “very deep faith,” which Dayna explained drew from indigenous beliefs and ways and faith in god.

Blending realism with regard for their daughter as a conscious being in her own right, Dyllan’s parents did not exclude her from what went on, but “let her lead the way,” said Dayna.

“We tried to talk with her as best we could and include her in decisions,” said Scott. “We would talk to her and pray.

“It was her will to be here now on this earth as I see it,” he continued. “She had several chances to check out (of life) and go back home. We took that as her way of saying she wants to remain here, that she has something to do here.”

“We prayed a lot, talked a lot, surren-dered to the process and the belief that ‘thy will be done,’” said Dayna.

“She’s a conscious being, even though she is a baby,” said her husband. “She had deep awareness of what was going on.”

n Oct. 17, 2010, a donor heart became available. Once again little Dyllan was rushed into what became 12 hours of surgery fraught with complications. Again her

parents were warned she might not make it. But she did. Swollen and with more than a dozen Iv medica-

tions in use, she began to rally. “She was, by far, the sickest child in the unit,” wrote her par-

ents. “To all of our amazement, she continued to fight for life and hang in there.”

Triumph reigned when, three days before Dyllan’s first birth-day in February 2011, she came home. She joined big sister Aliya

“whose world has also been turned upside down throughout this process,” wrote her parents.

But home just means continuing vigi-lance for the Wicks family.

A regimen of 24 medications at three-hour intervals around the clock has now been reduced to eight medications. Physi-cal and occupational therapists help Dyl-lan improve strength, flexibility and gross and fine motor skills. Wary of infections, her parents provide sterilizing hand lo-tions to visitors as they enter the house.

yllan’s major challenge now is to adjust to normal life, to eat normally so she can abandon

her feeding tube and sustain herself, and continue the development that began with scooting across the floor.

“Once she crosses the hurdle of food, we expect to be more normal as a family,” Dayna said happily. “We’ll catch up. It’s just a matter of time.”

Big sister Aliya is “extremely happy to have Dyllan home and all of us home on a full-time basis,” Dayna added.

It’s “good!” being a big sister, little Aliya chirped.

But besides the medical regimen, ongo-ing medical and maintenance bills remain for the family. That’s where longtime friend, Coastside artist Margaret Lindsey, comes in.

A friend of the Wicks since before Scott and Dayna were married, Lindsey calls the couple “a second family to me” and is “Auntie” to Aliya.

Lindsey already understood helping loved ones through illness. When her mother was hospitalized, she said, “there was nothing I could do to help other than to love, to express my own love and care and embrace” through art.

In 2006 she created a 20-inch-by-20-inch acrylic painting on canvas of a heart, drawing on historical depictions of hearts designed in geometric patterns that sym-bolize eternal beating.

“The heart is essentially a spiral,” said Lindsey. “There are many levels of mean-ing to this.”

She hung that original painting in her mother’s hospital room. And she hung a reproduction of it in little Dyllan’s hospi-tal room.

now, inspired by recent nPR fundrais-ers that involved giving donors “thank-you gifts,” she launched, in mid-november, an

ongoing online fundraiser centered on the print.

It includes different levels of giving with giclee reproductions of the original painting as gifts to donors.

Donors of $75 or more will receive 15

5-by-7-inch “heart spiral” greeting cards with envelopes. Donors of $108 or more will receive a 9-by-9-inch archival quality canvas print of the heart spiral, suitable for framing.

Donors of $365 or more will receive a 12-inch-by-12-inch-by-2-inch mounted ar-chival quality canvas print with painted enhancement by the artist. Donors of $700 or more will receive a 24-inch-by-24-inch-by-2-inch mounted archival qual-ity canvas print of the spiral with painted

enhancement by the artist, plus a set of 15 greeting cards.

The funds will go directly to the fam-ily for ongoing expenses, Lindsey said. “I really liked the idea of making it sweet for givers.”

Copies of the donation form can be found at Bamboo Body & Soul on Main Street. Forms can also be found on the Web at artransforms.com.

A link to Caring Bridge, at www.caring-bridge.org/visit/dylanwicks continues to blog Dyllan’s story.

From high places, little Dyllan has re-ceived several salutes for her pluck. June 9, 2011, was proclaimed Dyllan Kianna Wicks Day by San Francisco Mayor ed-win Lee, and she received a certificate of honor from then-Lt. gov. gavin new-som.

And her parents continue to receive in-spiration from her.

“We said goodbye in so many ways over the course of these very long months, and have prayed daily that her suffering would end,” they wrote in their statement. “We are learning how to open our hearts more fully and embrace this incredible spirit who, against all odds, continues to choose life.

“We do not know what tomorrow may bring, and just try to enjoy each moment, each day, with the profound realization of how precious life truly is.”

ooking to make a healthy, simple change to your eating habits this year? eat more often! The key to weight loss and stabilizing blood-sugar levels is to eat fi ve or six smaller meals per day.

One important reason to eat smaller portions more frequently is hunger management. Research has found that people who eat only two or three large meals per day tend to eat more calories than peo-ple who break up their calories into fi ve or six smaller meals. eating meals fi ve or six hours apart leads to overeating because you are so hungry that you eat more calories than are necessary to satiate your hunger.

This overeating leads to increased calorie intake and subsequent weight gain.

Another benefi t of eating smaller portions more frequently is stabi-lizing blood-sugar levels. Blood sugar, derived from broken-down food,

is essential in giving you energy and stamina. When it’s low, we reach for caff eine, sweets and other processed carbs. eating fi ve to six small meals leads to a steady supply of blood sugar and you are less likely to reach for sugary foods and coff ees to boost your energy.

Large meals give your body a huge dose of blood sugar all at once. This surge tells our body to stop burning fat and start storing it, and this is the exact opposite of what most of us are looking to have happen! Our goal is to burn fat, not store it.

So, make it a point to have three smaller main meals per day with two to three healthy snacks in between. Load your meals with produce, lean proteins and complex carbs. This healthy eating pattern can make a signifi cant diff erence in the results you are looking for. you will likely also feel more energetic and vital during the day.

We asked six fi tness professionals to share some advice on how to stay fi t and healthy.

What to eat, and to avoid, how to exercise, how to stay motivated, how to think about exercise.

Here are their words of wisdom.photos by charlie Russo

ou get good at what you practice. Practice sloppy piano scales and you will get very skilled at sloppy playing. The same principle works for exercise and movement. And getting good at your workout translates to greater calorie burn, increased strength and fl ex-ibility, improved coordination, along with exponential increases in all of the other benefi ts of exercise, which include improved cardiovascu-lar function, reduced stress, enhanced mood, and more.

Try incorporating these four elements of effi ciency to optimize the time you spend working out to ensure that you get those great results. (The four elements of effi ciency were detailed by Dr. eric Cobb of z-Health Perfor-mance Solutions.)

Perfect form: enlist the help of a skilled personal trainer, a knowledgeable teacher, an honest friend with a good eye, or even a good mirror. Insist on maintaining perfect form on every repetition, which translates to fewer repititions and a deeper level of concentration and precision.

dynamic Postural alignment: Proper posture increases spinal stability, decreases your risk of injury, and provides the perfect torque converter to transfer power from your trunk to your limbs. Here, a teacher or person-al trainer can help, but even more important is developing awareness of your own posture and understanding ways to improve it from the inside out. Practicing good posture on a daily basis has the added benefi t of making you look thinner, more confi dent, and even more attractive.

synchronized breathing: Focusing on the harmony of breath and movement in your workout is critical to effi ciency by ensuring that you are, in fact, breathing, which delivers needed oxygen to the muscles. Take some time before your workout to observe your breath, and then keep the breath as an underlying rhythm for your session.

balanced tension and relaxation: Think of a great running back or an Olympic gymnast. What we perceive as grace is really their abil-ity to balance the tension and relaxation in their bodies, thus creating optimal effi ciency. To work on this in your own body, try observing your body in the middle of a movement. Where are you holding unnecessary tension? Can you release everything but what you need to accomplish the movement? you can then use that energy toward performing the task.

These four tips are practical advice for any activity whether it’s lift-ing weights, riding horses, running, or even sitting at a computer. Fo-cusing on effi ciency can improve the quality of your workout, reduce pain, and take you to the next level!

he “core” is a buzzword that has caught much atten-tion over the last several years in the fitness community. However, it is hardly a new concept.

Professional athletes have focused on developing strength in their midsection for decades. The reason is quite simple. In order to be more powerful in your legs and arms, you must be able to transfer power through your center. Many exercisers seek the cosmetic benefits of having a strong midsection. yet, having a “six pack” is just the icing on the cake! Athletes and general exercisers alike need to develop functional strength in the midsection. For athletes, a strong core can dictate winning or losing an event. For the general public, a strong core means better daily function, sound posture, increased flexibility, a strong sense of balance, and lower incidence of back injury or pain.

Let’s define the term. Remove the arms and legs from the body, and nearly everything left in between is part of your core. your back, hips, butt, and muscles of the trunk and abdomen are all a part of your core. To train effectively, you must work:

the inner unit the deepest muscles closest to the spine. They act as a brace, or sleeve of support, around the spine keeping it stable.

the outer unit — the muscles that run from the ribs down to the pelvis allow forward and backward movement as well as rotation of the trunk. They stabilize the position of the pelvis so that we maximize power and minimize injury.

the sling muscles — the ones that run from the lower limbs, con-nect through the outer unit, and intermesh with the muscles of the

upper limbs. They connect the upper and lower body and dictate how much power we deliver.

you should include both isolated and integrated exer-cises in your routine. An example of an isolated exercise is the abdominal “crunch.” It allows us to achieve a burst of intensity within the targeted muscle group. Integrated

exercises use a larger series of muscles and provide functional train-ing for the midsection. Try the hover, also known more commonly as the “plank.” get down on your elbows, come up to your toes holding your body in a straight line from head to heels, and brace the midsec-tion without moving. See what you feel. not only will your heart rate increase due to the demand to deliver blood supply to more working muscles, but you will feel intensity and challenge every second of the way!

tips fRoM the pRos hat does the word “fitness” mean to you? If you are currently drinking the Kool-Aid and depending upon what your individual favorite “flavor” hap-pens to be, this term likely brings about visions of hiking, biking, bending and flexing. If you have yet to require the necessity of a 10-step program with regard to moving your body, then this seemingly unassuming term probably brings up images of grunting, groaning, sweating, aches, pains, struggle and strife.

So, which is it going to be? In my estimation, I would have to say neither. The word “fitness” literally means “health.” I believe that fitness should not be an action, but rather a result. I

prefer to think of the definition as, “the degree to which you may enjoy life at an elevated level.” In simple terms, you move better, feel better and even look better, all while focusing on the truly important aspects of life such as laughing, loving, playing, singing and dancing with wild abandon.

It has long been my belief that life is not a spectator sport. your body is crying out every day for you to actively participate in your well-being. Our bodies were never intended to sit still, let alone sit down for extended periods. By our very architecture we were designed to move. In most cases the formula is quite simple; move more and you will live better and live longer.

no matter what impassions you, fitness is a vehicle that will most certainly allow you to do it for longer and at a higher level, so get out there and start moving. Life, as they say, is a journey, and the healthier you are, the greater your ability to enjoy your travels. Life is no more about the destination than is fitness. The road is endless and ever-changing, and the ability to love every minute of it to the fullest is what fitness means to me.

ow are you going to end up where you want to be if you don’t know where you want to go? goals will focus your efforts and keep you moving in the right direction. All important achievements will consist of many smaller achievements, or mini goals.

goals must be smart. goals must be specific, written, exciting and achievable. They must be specific and written so that they are real to you, and so that you can see them and refer to them. They must be exciting. you should be energized when you think about accomplishing a goal. Finally, your goals must be realistic and believable to be effective.

am often asked the question – “If I want to lose body fat, why should I lift weights?”

The human body is extremely adap-tive. That is, it is designed to adapt to specifi cally imposed demands and stresses. There is a misconception that lifting weights is only for bodybuilders, or those simply looking to increase the size of their muscles to achieve a certain cosmetic look. Reducing body fat requires following the simple prin-ciple of burning more calories than you consume. The best way to increase the calories burned is to move more. Weight training provides an extremely potent means to accomplish this.

Weight training used to mean moving a weight in one plane of motion (i.e. sitting in front of a mir-ror with a barbell and fl exing your biceps). An eff ective weight-training regimen emphasizes effi cient muscle recruitment in diff erent planes of motion at diff erent speeds. So, instead of simply sitting, think about standing on one leg and performing the same bicep curl, at an extremely slow pace. Performing such a move-ment requires the body to recruit a large number of muscles in the lower body to stabilize itself while simul-taneously reacting to a stress placed upon the upper body. Because the body has now recruited more mus-cles, it is now burning more calories.

A person who decides to begin resistance training places his or her body under the stress of increased amounts of force on his or her mus-cles, connective tissues and nervous system. This creates a need for the body to increase oxygen and blood supply to the right areas in his or her body. In addition, the body is now forced to establish connections with and recruit muscle fi bers to respond to the demand placed upon it. To accomplish all of this, the body has no choice but to increase its cardiac output and rate of metabolism. Stay Fit and Be Well!

t’s no secret that the body was meant to move. Take it for a run, twist it like a curly fry or teach it to tap dance, and you’re on your way to better health. each form of exer-cise brings a unique set of benefits, but perhaps none offers more variations than martial arts.

On the Coastside, you have the option of taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu one day and then Thai boxing the next — both at Raul Castil-lo Martial Arts. From there, walk a few blocks up Main Street and you can jump into the traditional Korean martial arts at Kuk Sool Won. Want to see what China has to offer? The United Studios of Self Defense in Strawflower village offers a taste with Shaolin Kempo and Kung Fu along with other fitness classes such as yoga. Continue your China experience in Moss Beach where you can learn, among other arts, Qigong and Thai Chi at the Wind War-rior energy Center. Then, just a couple doors over is the Coastside Mixed Martial Arts location where instructor James Pendergast offers kickboxing and self-defense classes along with a more mod-ernized, streamlined take on some of these traditional arts.

you could say, for a small community, the Coastside really kicks

butt. But then many instructors would tell you that’s not the point. Many people have the mistaken idea that martial arts is “about learning different ways to hurt people,” says Master Paul Carmody of Kuk Sool Won. “It really is about health and fitness.”

Similarly, Castillo says opposing fighters generally have a lot of respect for each other and, in a way, they learn to fight so they don’t have to fight — a last resort in real-life situations.

In addition to respect, those who practice martial arts say they gain discipline, confidence, greater awareness of their own bodies and a natural high from attending class — even if they felt drained of energy before coming in.

uring a recent evening class at Kuk Sool Won, partici-pants of all ages started off with stretches and warm-ups before splitting into groups to practice techniques. In

pairs, assembled in two lines, one group bows and shakes hands with the other before engaging in what appears to be a clumsy form of ballroom dancing.

tHe aBcs of MMa☞brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Uses balance, momentum and leverage in a way that can put the attacker’s own en-ergy against him. Also utilizes grappling techniques such as trapping, throwing, joint locks, holds, kicking and striking. ☞Judo – Japanese art of throwing, it uses angles, lever-age and manipulation. Smaller opponents have a slight advan-tage.☞Karate – Translates to “way of the empty hand.” It is a Japa-nese weaponless defense system originating in the 17th century. ☞Kuk sool Won – “Kuk” translates to Korea or Korean people, “Sool” to “martial arts” and “Won” to “association” or “house.” Together the phrases can be understood as the “Asso-ciation of Korean Martial Arts.” In Half Moon Bay, this “house” is located next to Cunha’s Country grocery on Main Street where both traditional and new training techniques are practiced. ☞Kung fu – The Chinese martial arts form perhaps best known in popular culture for the 1974 hit song sung by Carl Douglas, Kung Fu actually translates to “great Achieve-ment.” That is no doubt be-cause it’s thought of as one of the most difficult martial arts to learn. ☞tai chi – Master David Theroff says he gets a good chuckle when people stop by the Wind Warrior Center expecting a Chinese restaurant. Instead, Tai Chi utilizes move-ments to promote relaxation and healing. “When you can put yourself in that 10-day vaca-tion in Hawaii no matter where you are,” Theroff says. ☞Qigong – “Is an art that evolved from watching a rice cooker steam,” Theroff said. This practice uses movement, breathing and awareness to best utilize the existing energy known in China as “Qi.”

grandson engage in the activity with other children and adults.

“I think it’s really encouraging that my son-in-law joins his son in participating,” Coughlin said. “They’ve been putting on quite a bit of muscle.” Coughlin says he sits in on the classes on a fairly regular basis and, over a period of several months, has seen his grandson grow in confidence and physical ability.

“It’s really amazing the number of push-ups my grandson can do,” he added.

Student Stephen Kruger used the class time to work with another student on some self-defense techniques. Kruger says, combined with improving his diet, participating in the Korean arts helped him lose about 60 pounds of excess weight. He says he was depressed before taking the classes and Kuk Sool Won helped with that as well.

Kuk Sool Won instructor Christian Duvall also changed his life around. After breaking bad habits like the smoking and drinking that the 39-year-old started in high school, he decided to revisit the Ko-rean art forms his uncle had taught him several years before.

His lifestyle and his physical job as a tree surgeon had been hard on his knees. After going for a five-mile run with his sister-in-law one day, he said his knees became so sore he had to walk on the way back. However, the next day he noticed marked improvement and realized move-ment was the key to staying flexible.

astillo, 27, says his lifelong involve-ment with martial arts has kept him in shape and out of trouble.

He started with karate at age 5 but became interested in Jiu-Jitsu after a Jiu-Jitsu-trained fighter, weighing a hundred pounds less than he did at the time, was able to beat him with these new moves.

Castillo says he values discipline and that’s apparent in the way he teaches his classes.

“you guys need to be able to listen to my instructions,” Castillo tells a group of

elementary school-aged kids during a re-cent Jiu-Jitsu class. “Keep your cup empty. I can’t fill your cup if it’s already full.”

The class then does warm-ups involving movements that look like leap frogs and flopping around the floor like fish.

Ava Shaw, now 11, says she’s been at-tending classes with Castillo for five years.

“It really helps you get over your fears,” she said. Ava said she used to be “scared of everything,” and participating in mar-tial arts was something a younger version of herself would have never imagined. She was inspired to try it, however, by her nanny at the time, martial arts instructor Charlene Coats.

“She’s really cool,” Ava said. “She’s one of the coolest people I’ve met.”

Castillo says the center has become a bit of a hangout, where students come

to do their homework before class, and parents might watch their children while catching up on their knitting.

The United Studios of Self-Defense operates on a similar philosophy. “We’re trying to cover all our bases, so it’s a one-stop shop,” said the owner and chief instructor Sherre england.

england explained that many of the classes center on focus and discipline but they don’t start until around 5 p.m. Students can put those skills to good use on their homework.

At the Coastside Mixed Martial Arts Center, Pendergast — who has worked as a police officer for several years — gives self-defense instructions. “Keep that chin down,” he said, while demonstrating the correct defensive stance to take with another student. “Protect it!

“MMA has kind of gotten a bad rap because of a lot of the stuff people see on Tv,” Pendergast said later, referring to the

heated disrespect the fighters seem to have for each other.

Pendergast himself brings to his classes pieces of Karate and Kung Fu along with traditional fitness and self-defense, “stripped down to all the stuff that works,” he said.

Student David Talley described it as “physical chess” because it’s “remembering patterns and seeing what they’re going to do.”

At the Wind Warrior energy Center, Master David Theroff says it takes longer to master the Chinese art forms than some of the others because the movements are more intricate and difficult. He says he definitely has seen the benefits in his personal life.

“It changed my life,” Theroff said. “I do Tai Chi because I had to.”

Though he’s been practicing the Chinese martial arts for about 40 years, Theroff injured his back through a career of com-puter work and aggravated the injury when he tried to move the center’s large wooden dummy.

His doctor told him to cut back on the Kung Fu, but through using Tai Chi and Qigong, Theroff says he has been able to manage the injury.

Theroff’s daughter and son are brown belts in Kung Fu and can demonstrate the moves for other students.

Several instructors said the benefits of their disciplines go beyond physical fitness.

“There’s a saying that energy can’t be destroyed or created,” Theroff said. “It can only be changed into something else.”

Duvall of Kuk Sool Won says the art forms and philosophy behind them help

practitioners grow deep below the layers of skin, bone, fat and muscle.

“We think of fitness in shallow terms,” he said. “We think of the body.”

But there is a spirit-like component that can be polished as well, Duvall noted.

“It’s what you glow with when you love or have a child, ” he said.

visit your favorite tree.First, take a long view of it. Is the shape symmetrical?

Does its shape remind you of something else? Take a close look and memorize the shape of the leaves. Find details in the leaves that you’ve never noticed before.

examine the bark. Is it rough, fairly smooth, shaggy, or does it resemble paper or cork? Look down at the ground beneath the tree. Does the earth that is shaded by the tree diff er from the earth farther out? Is the grass thinner, any diff erence in what’s growing there?

tiMe to cUt bAcK the Roses

ere it is that time of year again. Time to tuck your roses in for a couple of months so they can come back in top form this spring. Last year I was lazy/naughty/busy/experimenting (take your pick) and didn’t

get my roses taken care of until early March. It turned out to not be the best plan...

Well, it’s a new year and a new chance to do better (for me, anyway)! So, let’s do it together.

☞ready! Arm yourself with a pair of clean, sharp hand pruners. (Felcos are great.) get a good pair of gloves, a hand rake and a bucket before you head out to the garden.

☞Prune! First cut out all dead, diseased, weak and/or crossing branches (otherwise known as canes). Make these cuts all the way back, as far as possible, to where the branch comes from the trunk. next, cut the remaining, healthy canes back so that the overall height of the bush is reduced by about half. Make these cuts at an angle (angling toward the inside of the bush) just above an outward-facing bud.

☞clean up! Make sure all the leaves are off the bush. Remove them by hand if necessary. Rake up the leaves and any other refuse from under each bush. Be meticulous. The fallen leaves harbor diseases like rust and black spot that will spend the winter there and re-infect the new leaves when they emerge if you don’t get all of them. (That means even the stems and small pieces.) Don’t put this refuse in your compost; dispose of it in your green waste container.

☞relax. no need to feed them or apply any organic fungicides until the leaf buds start to swell in March. you have just eff ectively put your roses into hibernation. now sit back and let them sleep! CML

A runner called needing Bodywork for a post-surgical knee so she could run again, as soon as possible. She asked why our Massage rates were higher than some spas. Great question!

Sometimes we need Massage, to relax, pamper, relieve soreness… Swedish, Hot Stone, Reiki, pregnancy, shiatsu, medium to fi rm pressure... Massage typically runs $70 to $140 per hour.

Other times we need Bodywork to restore pain-free movement, to improve sport performance, or rebalance our posture. Whether it’s a knee or shoulder, a headache, a new or old injury, bodywork addresses the core muscles, fascia & triggerpoints that cause our pain. Bodyworkers combine Massage with Deep Tissue and other therapies, evaluate movement restrictions, teach us stretches and exercises to improve range of motion and and usually run $100 to $200/ hour.

Sometimes you want a restorative Massage. Other times you need Bodywork to overcome pain or to improve sport or work performance. Balancenter has both at $100 and $120 per hour.

Awareness is the key to opening unconscious holding and relaxing habits of muscular ten-sion. The practitioner’s presence, “listening” touch, and words support deepening aware-

ness on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Protective layers are contacted and met. Access to the truth of lived experience brings forth more breath, freedom, and aliveness, enhancing embodied self-awareness. The essence of Rosen Method Bodywork is the simplicity of being and accepting rather than needing to fi x. Self-acceptance supports profound change and transformation, including healthy behavior and positive action in the world.

Moving from the inside to the outside increases the felt sense of the body. Learning to move with ease invites living with ease. Rosen Method Movement is both preventative and

rehabilitative. Set to music, these easy, unhurried movements improve alignment, fl exibility, and balance. Class participants benefi t from increased range of motion, relaxation, and fl ow of breath while discovering their own rhythm and delight in expanded possibilities.

ity and opened my own practice to be able to give patients what they needed to get better quicker: 1) Adopting a unique approach to rehabilitation through 50 minute one-on-one sessions 2) Using an eclectic approach of manual therapy to prepare the injured tissue for strengthening and stretching exercises. 3) Establishing a customized home exercise program at the fi rst visit to give the patient a part in his/her own rehabilitation. In addition to working with conditions related to overuse, trauma, surgery, accidents and sports related injuries, I am also a certifi ed golf performance coach. Let me help your game by combining biomechanics of the golf swing with your individual body’s idiosyncrasies.

“We need to stop treating patients like commodities. That’s what is wrong with our health care system.”

CompassionateCare for Seniors,Respite for FamiliesCoastside Adult Day Health Center is ex-cited to celebrate our 25th year of provid-ing health care services to our frail, elderly,

and disabled. We are especially proud that we were the 1st Adult Day Health Center in San Mateo County. Over the years we have continued to assist coastside families and their loved ones in an effort to keep the elderly in their own homes, near family

and friends, and in the community they helped build, preserving their dignity and choice. One of the biggest fears a senior has is to be placed in a nursing home. Our services offer a cost effective alternative to premature placement.

Martha’s Golf Conditioning

Martha’s Golf Conditioning trains your body to do what a great golf swing requires. I’ve analyzed the biomechanics of fi ve

keys aspects of your swing: address, backswing, downswing, follow through and putting. I teach you specifi c pilates exercises designed to improve those areas. We work together to increase your core strength and fl exibility and to improve your balance, stamina and mental focus.

I offer a twelve session program, addressing a different biomechanic of your swing each session. I send you home

with exercises to practice at home and on the course. Contact me before 1/31/12 for a free introductory session.

“Hit the ball farther and straighter with reduced risk of injury. Take care of the body that swings your club.”

he word silhouette is derived from the name of 18th-century French Finance Minister — etienne de Silhouette. In mind of the backlit style of image the word is used for today, historians have long wondered whether etienne was known as a

shadowy sort of character or just liked this style of portrait. Whatever the case, silhouettes make for great photographs, particularly here on the Coastside, when the winter sun hangs low in the sky over the ocean. Head to the harbor or along the Coastal Trail in the late afternoon and the opportunities are numerous: workers along the docks, fishermen on the jetty, or surfers unknowingly re-enacting the “endless summer” film poster. There are two tricks to making a good silhouette: Meter on a bright point behind your subject and shoot to render distinguishable forms. Stick to that and you’ll create photos that would make the shady French minister proud. charleS ruSSo
