Blue yogurt doesn’t stain

It’s no secret. The reason why people choose to live on the Coastside, apart from the stunning natural beauty, is the chance to be part of a small-town community. Surrounded by cities five and ten times our size where

it may be difficult to get to know your neighbors, the Coastside’s natural isolation tends to draw people together. This is especially apparent at our local businesses.

Does your dry cleaner know your name? Do you catch up on what your kids are into with your barber? Does your local coffee shop staff know your

order? Probably. Not only is this just polite, its also good business. Your local merchants want you to feel welcome in their stores, so you want to return. Are you willing to spend an extra dollar on a quart of paint if the folks at the local hardware store make you feel comfortable? I sure am.

We try to do the same for every person that walks into the Review office. Whether you come in to place a classified ad, renew a subscription or share a point of view, our job is to listen and get to know you — deadline or not. It’s just good business.

Every July in our magazine, we try to introduce you to as many local businesses as we can. You’ve probably seen these merchants walking down Main Street or dropping off a package at the post office. Take a look at Page 24. Now you’ll know what they do. Patronize them. Let them know you saw them in the magazine.

The drawback of knowing the people you do business with? The embarrassment when you drop off a sack of shirts at the dry cleaner and discover your son’s half-eaten, blue raspberry yogurt-in-a-tube was thrown in there — several weeks ago. Sorry about that. Then my shirt comes back spotless. I’ll be back.

As temperatures heat up (most places…it cools off on the San Mateo Coast!) and grilling season ramps up, we thought we would talk about the importance of temperature control. Cooking your food to the right temperature is an important part of avoiding food borne illness. (The other very important one is keeping cooked proteins away from raw ones, which means using separate utensils and cutting boards to avoid cross contamination.) The “danger zone” is between 41and 135 degrees Fahrenheit; food should spend as little time as possible in this range, as this is the range where bacteria can thrive.

Here is a quick guide to proper minimum cooking temperatures:145° –Fish, and solid cuts of meat like steaks, chops and roasts.155° – Ground beef or pork, and anything that is stuffed.165° – All poultry and anything that is being reheated.

These temperatures are your target temperatures. With poultry and larger cuts like roasts you will have what is called “carryover cooking.” As your food rests, (resting allows the juices that have come to the outside parts of the meat to recede back in, giving you a much juicier dinner!) it will continue to cook about 5° before starting to cool a little. Therefore, if you want your turkey to cook to 165°, take it out of the oven or off the grill when it hits 160°. That could be the difference between a juicy, tasty turkey and one that is dry and overdone.

So what are our favorite thermometers? For a quick check of many items, we love the CDN Digital Insta-Read for its easy-to-read display and quick response time. If you want to keep a close eye on something and leave the probe in what you are cooking, we recommend the CDN Dual Sensing Probe

Thermometer that allows you to monitor the temperature of both the meat you are cooking, and that of the oven or grill.

For surface temperatures (your cast iron pan or a wood fired pizza oven, for instance), oil or candy making, we recommend the CDN Infra-Red gun to get a quick read and keeping things clean.

Tip of the MonthMake sure your oven is calibrated!Does food seem to cook too quickly, or take much longer than a recipe suggests? Your oven might be off. Hang an oven thermometer from the rack in the middle of the oven, and set the oven to heat to 350°. When the oven tells you it has reached temperature, see what the oven thermometer says. If needed, adjust your settings accordingly. For instance, if it reads 325°, when a recipe calls for 375°, set your oven for 400°.

Cocktail Recipe of the MonthRamble in the Bramble• 1 oz. Inna’s Triple Crown Blackberry Shrub • 1.5 oz. Vodka • 4 oz. Ginger Ale • Lime twistPlace the first three ingredients in a double old fashioned glass in the order listed. Add ice cubes and stir well. Add the lime twist. Enjoy.

Question of the MonthWhat is a Shrub?Shrubs (featured in our recipe of the month) were popular in the 1700s in Colonial America, a time when vinegar was often used to preserve fruit. The resulting liquid was put in ice water in the summer. In the 1800s refrigeration techniques came into play, and vinegar preserved fruits fell by the wayside, as did the shrub. In the past few years due to the cocktail renaissance, they have come back into favor. (The word “shrub” come from the Arabic root sharab meaning “drink,” which is also where we get the name of another summertime delight, “sherbert.”)

Flashback

After the Gold Rush years, thousands of ships began sailing close to the fog-shrouded shore on the approach to a thriving San Francisco. As a result, shipwrecks numbered into the hundreds along the Coastside.

The first warning signal at Montara was a steam-powered whistle, installed in 1875. In 1900, a red light was hung from a tall post to

offer a visual warning. The 1,700 candlepower light in this photo sent out a focused beam that could be seen for 14 miles. That new light was installed in 1914.

Now Montara Light is mounted upon a more elegant structure with its current fine skirt. It was brought to the West Coast in 1928 from Cape Cod, Mass., where it had served since the 1880s. In 1970, it lost its lighthouse keeper when the Coast Guard departed, leaving the light and foghorn system fully automated.

~ Come for the laughsJuly 5, 6 Only comedian Will Durst could so dexterously weave the achievements, frustrations, maturation and looming doom of the Baby Boom generation into a rollicking, outrageous yet thought-provoking 85-minute monologue he calls “BoomeRaging: From LSD to OMG.” And he will deliver it at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 5, and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Coastal Repertory Theatre at 1167 Main St. in Half Moon Bay. Tickets are $30, avail-able at www.coastalrep.com, where you can also find further information. 569-3266.

Having performed worldwide at top festivals and jazz venues, Washington, D.C., native Denson and his partners on trumpet, piano and drums will bring their fusion jazz to the Coastside. Tickets are $35. 726-2020.

~ Vets honor vetsJuly 7 Getting veterans together is what the seventh annual vets to vets blues festival, is about. It’s sched-uled from noon to 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 474 at 470 Capistrano Road in Princeton. Starting at 1 p.m., live music will include the house band with Stan Erhart and others, plus other special guests. Disabled or challenged veterans will be bused in from veterans Administration centers in Menlo Park and Palo Alto. It’s free. 728-9224.

~ Restore a piece of historyJuly 19 In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the town of Purissima existed a few miles south of Half Moon Bay. In the 1930s it was abandoned, and now the site is overgrown with invasive plants. That didn’t stop the state Coastal Conservancy from donating it to the Coastside Land Trust, which is holding the first of four Puris-sima Old Town Site habitat restoration work days from 10 a.m. to noon today on the seven-acre site. Meet at the corner of the first verde Road exit on Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay. Wear long sleeves and gardening gloves, and be ready to restore native plants and walkways to make the property accessible to visitors and pic-nickers. 726-5056.

~ Celebrate a lively, musical, patriotic FourthJuly 4 The Coastside is the place to go for a lively, pa-triotic Fourth of July with heartfelt community partici-pation and lots of kids, animals and local color. Start your day at 8 a.m. at Mac Dutra Park at the intersec-tion of Kelly Avenue and Main Street in Half Moon Bay with a pancake breakfast with all the trimmings. It’s whipped up by the Lions Club of Half Moon Bay. Just $5 gets you all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee. From there, enjoy the ambi-ence of downtown Half Moon Bay decked in red, white and blue. At noon, the Ol’ Fashioned Fourth of July Pa-rade winds down Main Street, with floats with local dignitaries and groups, kids on decorated bikes and trikes, animals, mounted units and more. Ready for lunch? Then head to the Coastside Adult Day Health Center at 645 Correas St., Half Moon Bay, for a barbe-cue lunch with hot dogs, hamburgers and live music by Claddagh with Grant Walters, Kevin Brennan and friends. Or head to Princeton for the annual American Legion Post 474 Fourth of July festivities starting at about 1 p.m. (or after the parade.) They’ll include live entertainment by Joe Flambo and the Wall of Blues band. There will be food and beverages available at a nominal cost; no alcohol, but you can bring low lawn chairs. Unfortunately, there won’t be any fireworks on the coast this year. 726-8380.

ne by one, they arrive. Each greets the others with hugs all around, and they begin to talk in earnest: about the wind-whipped waves before them that

afternoon, of World Cup soccer, of a recent

get-together.Then, they strip to their

wetsuits — some all the way down to swim shorts — strap on

their bright yellow swim caps, and slowly wade into the ocean. Soon you can hear them shouting, acclimating to the water’s chill.

“I tell people who aren’t used to it that it’s like a roller coaster ride,” says Half Moon Bay resident John Caughlin. “You can scream because it’s fun or because it’s scary, but it’s the same ride.”

That ride is a dip in the Pacific Ocean, which this group of Half Moon Bay and Peninsula residents does several times a week. They are open-water swimmers, adults ranging in age and background who have all united around their shared passion for something that is not for the faint of heart.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone,” said Half Moon Bay swimmer Nicole David. “This isn’t your comfort zone.”

The most veteran open-water swimmer in the group, 66-year-old Randy Brown, began swimming in the ocean because his Hawaiian high school didn’t have a pool. Brown, now a San Mateo resident, joined the San Mateo Masters swim team in the late 1990s. That’s where he met Joel Swartz. Swartz has coached and served as president of the Mavericks Swimming Association swim team and helped out with the Half Moon Bay High School swim team.

“It’s always open, it’s never crowded and there’s no drop-in fee,” said Swartz, a jovial man who likes to interject jokes about his fellow swimmers into conversations.

Swartz later met David and Gabor Lengyel at the Half Moon Bay High School pool and recruited them into ocean swimming. The group has several regular members who joined

from masters swim teams, and they often get together and swim weekday mornings at Miramar Beach before work.

“We met in the pool and Joel dragged us out in the ocean,” David said. “At first I’m thinking these guys are crazy, but then I go out and it’s so much fun.”

Swimming is not just a fun hobby or strictly exercise for them, though they laud both as benefits. Group members have swum the English Channel, both ways, and taken part in the 9.6-mile Maui Channel swim.

It was during that swim in 2011 that Caughlin’s life was altered. At the finish zone, a boat ran him over. His arm had to be amputated above the right elbow, and he lost the thumb and index finger on his left hand.

One-and-a-half years later, he had recovered enough to get back in the water. He’s hoping to swim in the pool again

someday, but, for the time being, it’s too difficult for him emotionally.

“The pool has not been good to me; I can see all the stuff I’ve lost,” Caughlin said. “I’m hoping I can gain that back.”

He finds his peace in the ocean. He wears fins to keep up with the group, but considers his injury “not as big a deal as it could have been.”

control,” Caughlin says. “But I have no problem giving up control. It’s an active meditation.”

Open-water swimming is calming and addictive, says Lengyel.“It’s fantastic to feel the force of the water,” Lengyel said. “You feel

it on your skin. It’s as close as you can get to the force of nature. If you learn to ride it right, you can feel like a child again.”

There is also a peril to open-water swimming. Three times the group has attempted the Channel Islands swim, a 27.4-mile relay from Santa Rosa Island back to the mainland. It’s a feat that has only been accomplished once, and for good reason — sometimes windy conditions make the swim impossible. That’s what happened to the group on its third attempt last month.

The conditions can be rough locally, as well. The group swam at Martin’s Beach earlier this year, where the heavy shore break made for dangerous conditions exiting the water. That resulted in a bloody nose for one swimmer.

“What we do when it’s a bit rough is watch over each other more closely,” Lengyel said. “You have to watch out for each other.”

Swimmers, including Mike Spalding, from Maui, Hawaii, swim along Surfer's Beach. Those who do it regularly say that

swimming off the Coastside isn’t for everyone.

Nicole David, of Half Moon Bay, does her best to get warm after an open-water swim along the Coastside.

Joel Swartz warms up with a hot chocolate. Coastside open-water swimmers have their ways of warming up after a chilly dip in the Pacific Ocean.

It’s clear the swimmers have a tight bond, created out of years of conquering white-capped waters, foggy swims to the jetty and traditions, like the jelly beans that Swartz passes out before swims and the hot chocolate they consume after. But their friendships go beyond the breaking waves.

“I was the best man at his wedding,” Brown says of Swartz. “We develop that kind of camaraderie. It goes pretty deep.”

Back at Miramar Beach, the swimmers laugh and tease each other as they prepare for their afternoon jaunt.

“It could be gnarly,” Swartz says.“I knew I was going to get a hard

one. It is Friday the 13th,” Caughlin adds.

After wading into the water, a wave envelops them. Soon, all you can see is the bright yellow of their swim caps bobbing above the water and their arms pinwheeling as the foghorn bellows in the background, an accompaniment to their brief journey at sea. HMB

There is no rite of summer on the coast any more enduring or endearing as the Half Moon Bay Girls Softball League.

Plenty has changed since the first summer league action took place 43 years ago. The equipment, the uniforms and the site have changed. For one thing, this is the sixth year league games take place at Half Moon Bay High School.

But there is a constant: support. The league has become a family tradition for many.

Half Moon Bay Magazine wanted to honor that tradition and tip a cap to some of the women who are responsible for a league of their own.

‹ DEANNA TOWER

Tower is a lifer in the Half Moon Bay Girls Softball League. It all started when she was 5 and was a batgirl for a team. That got her playing, which led to coaching. She now coaches the Half Moon Bay High School

team and a fall ball team as well. She has been a head coach for four years and an assistant for 10. For the first time in a long time, she is taking the summer off from coaching softball. That doesn’t stop her from continuing to play the game. “My best experience was just being on the field,” Tower said. “It was great to be a part of it. It’s part of my spring, summer and fall.” As for winter, when the rain comes and keeps players off the field, that can be tough on Tower. “You can do all the weight training and all the chalk talks in the world,” she said. “But nothing replaces being out on the field.”

‹ GINA BRAzIL

Brazil is probably one of the few Coastsiders who’s heavily involved

with the program despite not having played when she was a child. She was busy tending to chores at home back then. But since her daughter Angela started playing nine years ago, Brazil has become Patridge’s right-hand woman. “Wherever she needs me, I will be there,” Brazil said. When she is not needed elsewhere, Brazil is perfectly content to sit in the picnic area, near the concession stand, and enjoy the scene. In the foreground, there are kids of all ages and sizes running around, riding their scooters or heading to the concession stand for a little snack. In the background is the excitement of the games themselves. Throw in a sunny summer evening, and Brazil is in heaven. “I just love watching the girls play,” Brazil said. “When you have a night like this, there is no better place to be.”

DENICE MERLO ›

Next to Patridge, Merlo might be the most important person

involved with the softball league. Merlo is in charge of the concession stand. Merlo has been working the stand for 18 years. That is nearly two decades of cooking the hot dogs, heating up the chili and making sure there is plenty of inexpensive candy around. “I get a real kick to watch the little kids counting their money to see what they can buy,” Merlo said. While she does the preparation, the parents are responsible for running the stand on any particular day. Merlo gives them a quick course in how it works and then her job is done.Near the end of the night, as the games wind down, orders come in for the players’ postgame meals. Those are put together quickly.“I just love this,” Merlo said.

CLAIRE YERBY ›

Yerby represents not only the nearly 100 girls who are playing this year, but the thousands of girls who

played before her. “It is just a fun environment,” she said. Like the many before her, Yerby remembers the nerves she had prior to her first game. She is thankful for the response she got from her coach. “I realized this is a very low-key league,” Yerby said. “If I mess up, my team will have my back.” She still has plenty of time to make more memories. Her first opening day stands out. “It was great to run the bases,” she said. “Everyone got their name called and everyone got to run the bases.”

STEPHANIE DUNCAN

Duncan has a strong history with Half Moon Bay softball. She was the starting pitcher for the 1988 high

school team that won the Central Coast Section title, the only CCS softball title in school history. The title was nice, but Duncan finds joy in the game – win or lose. “I grew up at Arleta Park,” Duncan said. “I was at Smith Field all day, every day.” She started playing when she was 7, holding down right field. She finished playing in the league when she was 19. “One night, we were at a high school dance,” Duncan said. “The next morning, while our friends slept, we were playing softball in the drizzle. We looked terrible.” Duncan has stopped coaching for a while so she can raise her own children. She hopes to return to the coaching ranks some day. “I do miss the coaching,” Duncan said.

NAOMI PATRIDGE

Patridge is the founder of the league and remains synonymous

with softball on the coast. For her, it never gets old. “For me, the best part is to watch the girls as they get excited to play,” Patridge said. Patridge gets a kick out of seeing those who played once upon a time and are now coaching their own daughters. There have been no third generation players, yet. “I am not sure when that will happen,” she said. “Time does fly.” As the girls grow into women and leave the game, a part of Patridge sticks with them. “She is my second mom,” said Stephanie Duncan, a former player and coach.

Arranged along one wall over the counter are several bits for bridles for horses. Under the counter, books on horses join publications on chickens in rows or on stacks. Curled up in a ray of sunlight on the computer keyboard is

“Olivia,” a four-month-old calico kitten. It’s all surrounded by the pleasant aromas of grain, hay and leather.

Where else would you go to find chicken scratch or wire to build chicken enclosures, halters or saddles or other horse tack, dogs’ rubber or chew toys, bales of hay, birdhouses for backyard feathered friends, greeting cards for family or little wood placards with funny slogans to brighten barn to living room, all under one roof?

Nowhere, says Carl Hoffman, owner since 1990 of Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel at 331 Main St., Half Moon Bay. After visiting similar feed stores across California, Oregon and Washington state, the craggy-faced Half Moon Bay resident confidently calls his store one of a kind.

He says three families have owned the store since 1911, and he learned from the early days of the Cunha

Country Grocery. “People like shopping and living in the past. That’s what we provide,” he said. “We provide a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday business. It’s the opposite of the strip mall, and we work hard to make sure we maintain that image.”

The store also provides the wherewithal to care for primarily farm and domestic animals. “Every imaginable animal gets served here,” said Hoffman.

Poultry makes up the busiest part of the business, said Hoffman, who estimated that he sells from 24 to 40 tons of poultry feed per month. The store also sells coops and materials for the backyard henhouses scattered around the coast.

Their owners are “mainly back-yard people” who want chickens not for meat but for their own farm-fresh eggs, said Hoffman.

To start them off, Feed & Fuel regularly sells baby chicks and young

turkeys brought from hatcheries around the state, as well as heat lamps and tiny food and water containers to be used to raise them. Several times a year the store also sells three-month-old chicks of a broad variety of breeds, for home farmers who want a head start, and it is not unusual for buyers to begin to line up along Main Street at 6 a.m. on

sale day, three hours before the doors open. The next such sales are July 12 and Aug. 9.

Local horse owners, boarding facilities and ranchers bring Feed & Fuel another big piece of business: equine supplies. A second level inside the store is filed with mostly Western and some English saddles, some sold on consignment. Hoffmzn says he sells about 60 saddles a year. The store also offers equine supplies: halters, lunge lines, bridles and bits, spurs, saddle pads, blankets, boots and helmets for riders, hay, grooming supplies and non-prescription medications.

Stroll down into the side display rooms and down the aisles to experience the calming aromas of farm or ranch.

There are huge bags of feed and stall or cage bedding for furred or feathered animals. More than 1,000 bales of bedding a week are delivered around San Mateo County, said Hoffman.

There are squeaky toys and tasty treats to gnaw for dogs. For the creative, there are hides — pig, cow or goat — to be made into chaps. For those driven by necessity, there are tools in the ranch hardware section.

Men, women or kids frequent stacks of cowboy hats. Many customers shop for grandkids, said Hoffman. Magazines offer the latest news on farming or livestock.

As many as 500 customers a day on weekends provide the store’s tourist business. They peruse greeting cards with animal or farm themes, bird feeders and ceramic home decorative gifts. Gardeners can find organic fertilizer including pungent but effective bat guano.

Live animals sold there, besides chickens, include rabbits that 4-H members look for, and have included chinchillas. Goldfish, helpful for

consuming mosquito larvae or feeding pet reptiles, circle in large tubs. From a corner one can hear chirping from crickets also destined for reptile feed.

With computers around, stepping into Feed & Fuel is not exactly stepping back in time, but rather into a back-to-roots ambiance reflective more of the past than a fast-paced, high-tech present.

That is what Hoffman says he embraces. In college, he majored in real estate, where he says he learned three valuable things — location, location, location — which he applies here.

“This location right here, I wouldn’t move one inch either way for any amount of money,” he said. “We’re growing slower than the rest of the world.”

He worked in packaging engineering and built houses before buying Feed and Fuel in February 1990, and now operates four stables and two cattle ranches on the coast.

He credits quality and diversity with the store’s success, and now, financially secure, he says that while he doesn’t need to work, “there’s too much going on. I can’t let go.”

Kathy Oler, who worked at and helped run Feed & Fuel for several years before 1990, remembers when the “fuel” part of the name signified products like kerosene, coal or wood used to heat homes. She laughingly recalls learning “so much — amazing” when she worked there, such as from the customer who asked her for a size 3 boot for horse — along with an outline of what he wanted.

“It brought joy to my heart to serve the community that way,” she said.

The cornerstone of that growth is having what people need on hand. “We’re entertainment,” said Hoffman. “We entertain the lifestyle people

want to lead and they can get it all here. Customers who come in with questions can

find help from any of the 15 to 20, full-or part-time employees. “There’s absolutely no question,” said Hoffman, “that we are as good as our staff. They will stop to talk to you, help you.”

Near the chicken coops, eight-year employee David Berg lines bottles of towelettes for cleansing eggs neatly along a shelf. Having grown up with a farmer uncle and cousins in 4-H, he works anywhere in the store: hauling stock, caring for rabbits or any general tasks.

“I like this,” he said of his work. “It gives you a little of both: we have technology, we have this. You get a happy medium.”

Five-year employee Loren Marcuson of Pescadero, often found behind the counter sporting his Feed & Fuel baseball cap, taps his own experience to help customers in a job he calls “definitely an experience. It’s not like anywhere else I’ve ever been to.” At home he has chickens, ducks, horses, a dog and three cats.

Twenty-plus-year employee and store manager Robin Camozzi’s story is also more a personal than business one.

“We know what we’re selling you and why we’re selling it,” she said. “You pay more because we’re on Main Street but you get more personal service.”

Camozzi grew up visiting Feed & Fuel for fun, and gave her own two daughters the same experience. Recent college graduate Brianna was a regular visitor by age 2 to play with the animals, and her sister Laura became a Feed & Fuel regular at 15.

“This is not a job, it’s a lifestyle,” said Camozzi. “It’s family here. It’s a legacy.”

“Wealth is secondary to leading this sort of lifestyle,” said Hoffman. “Show me a person who is raising animals and I’ll show you an honest human being.”

Feed & Fuel is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 pm. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. It is closed only a handful of times during the year: on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter and during the Fourth of July parade. HMB

Café Capistrano SINCE 2001 Café Capistrano serves Mexican cuisine with a Mayan flare. Chef and owner, Artruo Mul, reigns from the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. When opening his restaurant, he wanted to introduce the flavors and food from his hometown. Mul brought in family recipes to help create the menu and specialty items. One of the most distinctive flavors found in Mayan cooking is achiote. Achiote is a paste made from seeds of the annatto tree and is used in the preparation of house specialties such as cochinita pibil, which is a slow cooked pork that has been marinated in an achiote sauce with lime juice. Other specialties of the house include the fish taco plate, panuchos, salbutes, poc chuc, and enchiladas. Open on weekends for breakfast, offering Mayan specialties and American favorites.

Q&a

Lifeguard is a way of life

Jeff Wadkins is San Mateo County’s sole full-time California State Parks lifeguard. He is part police officer, part traditional lifeguard and completely a

waterman. Some people say they live their job; Wadkins means it.

He lives in state housing in parkland just north of Half Moon Bay and carries a pager wherever he goes. He is likely to be the only trained rescuer to dive in the water when there is trouble, from Montara to the Santa Cruz County line.

He wouldn’t have it any other way. In fact, he often takes surfing vacations, and when he does, he’s likely to check in with the local lifeguards.

Wadkins sat down with the HMB magazine on a recent, calm weekday to talk about his job and how he came to it.

HMB: How did you get started doing this? Did you grow up around here?

JW: You know, I didn’t. I didn’t grow up by the ocean but I always wanted to be by the ocean. I started as a seasonal lifeguard in Santa Cruz. I spent about five years on the big island of Hawaii and that is where I really fell in love with the ocean. I had my first encounter with a lifeguard there.

HMB: Because you needed help?

JW: I guess I was body surfing and I got too close to some rocks and I’ll never forget this guy swam out and gave me a safety contact. “Hey, just to let you know, you are getting close to these rocks, and people can get sucked in over there. You are doing fine, but …”

HMB: And you thought to yourself, “I can get paid for that?”

JW: I know, right! Then I moved back to Santa Cruz and I went to go boogie board on this big day, and me and my buddy just got outside and we noticed this guy body surfing saying, “Help, I’m out of gas, I’m out of gas!” Naturally, I paddled over to him. I made the choice to give him my boogie board and let him catch it in. I had to swim for 15 or 20 minutes to get in. At the time I had friends who were lifeguards and when they heard about it they said, “You should lifeguard.” I thought that was a great idea. It was my first save and I wasn’t even a lifeguard yet, which is common. Out here, we get a lot of surfers who will make rescues.

HMB: I was going to ask you about that. We hear about

that. Do you recommend people not put themselves in perilous situations?JW: Definitely not. We recommend you not try to be a hero. It just so happens that some of our local watermen are confident. If they see someone getting sucked out, they will lend a hand. You know, it is always dangerous, because you don’t know how people are going to react. And if you don’t have the training to deal with that, you can get in a bad situation quick.

HMB: One of those parent things that you worry about is, what if my kid got into a riptide? What would I do?

JW: Right. I had a rescue two summers ago now. The waves weren’t even that big, but the rips were pulling. I was at my house and people come running up to my house screaming, “Help!” Long story short, I just see one guy in the water and he’s really struggling. I run down to the beach and right as I’m getting out to him, he starts to go under. He’s unconscious and I bring him in. He pulled through. He had gone out originally to get his kids, and his kids had been washed in. And he’s out there freaking out and went into shock. That is a perfect example of what can happen.

HMB: So it’s sort of a judgment call. If you know what you are doing, that’s different than if you are from Nebraska and have never seen the ocean before.

JW: And that’s why it all starts with awareness and just the general respect for the ocean. As the parent, you have to look and say, “Is this a safe spot?”

HMB: So you live in state housing?

JW: I’m in the Miramar neighborhood. It’s just housing that is within the State Parks boundaries.

HMB: That’s a cool thing.

JW: Yeah. It’s great. A lot of my more intense rescues have generated from the house. People know I’m there.

HMB: Does that mean that you are never off?

JW: Well, I’m off, but what I love to do is rescue people. In my own time, I carry a pager. If there is ever an aquatic emergency on the San Mateo County coast, I’m alerted.

HMB: Are you a sworn peace officer?

JW: I am. I’m badged up. I carry a pistol. It’s just another level of lifeguarding. I can keep the beach safe aquatically,

and I can also keep it safe with law enforcement. My badge says “Peace Officer” and that’s exactly what I do; I keep the peace. If there is ever a situation where the peace is broken, I can step in.

HMB: Is that because you just notice things or are you specifically called? If someone has an illegal bonfire, do you get called, or does the Sheriff’s Office get called?

JW: It depends. If it’s in the State Parks, I get called. We have a great working relationship with the Sheriff ’s Office. You start off as a seasonal lifeguard. You get a rescue tube, a pair of fins and some red shorts, and your only responsibility is to guard the beach. We have a seasonal at Montara on the weekends, and we have a seasonal at Francis State Beach and at San Gregorio.

HMB: That’s what I saw on Baywatch.

JW: Right. They’re the ones on the front lines. I was a seasonal for several years and loved it and started working up the ranks. The final rank is to go through the State Parks Peace Officer Academy and become full-time. Then you work year-round and you step it up. You become a peace officer, fish cop, whatever you want to call us. There are all kinds of names for it. You have more of a responsibility to run a seasonal lifeguard program.

HMB: Did you go through the junior lifeguard program?

JW: No, because I wasn’t born and raised on the coast, so when I started working as a lifeguard they used to make fun of me. I was the biggest junior lifeguard on the beach! For a kid like me that would be the ideal summer camp.

HMB: Are you the only permanent lifeguard on the San Mateo County coast?

JW: Right now, I’m the only permanent lifeguard. We do have two aquatic rangers. They are badged rangers wearing the green uniform, but they are certified to

make rescues. They don’t really have any responsibility to the lifeguard program. They go through the ranger program but they are also watermen. They surf and they love the ocean and can help.

HMB: Is the program properly funded?

JW: Well, it has to do with what are your resources and what is your recreational use. For example, in Santa Cruz, I was a part of a seasonal lifeguard program of 40 to 60 seasonals. They have three junior lifeguard programs. They have 10 to 12 towers, because there is a lot more aquatic usage. Here, our water is much colder. We have much more powerful surf. So we don’t tend to get quite the amount of usage. With that said, we would always love to have more funding. This isn’t a very popular place to be a lifeguard. A lot of other places in the world, you have a lot more backup. You might have city agencies and county agencies. People are almost fighting to say whose territory it is. I’ve gotten really used to working alone up here. There really isn’t anyone coming in the water after me. I have the Coast Guard, which is great.

HMB: When we were talking earlier, you just guessed that this wasn’t going to be a real

busy day. What’s a normal day like for you when it’s slow?

JW: Well, it depends what time of year. I go in service about 8 a.m. I’ll start with a quick patrol of the beaches; see what’s going on. Are there people camping out? Is there some fire I should put out? Are there any boats that have washed up? Just the usual patrol; check out the parking lots. Then I’ll come to the office here in Half Moon Bay. I have a lot of administrative work to do with scheduling seasonals, making sure they are properly trained …

HMB: How many seasonals do we have here?

JW: At this moment, we have seven. They are amazing, ranging in age from 16 to 24.

HMB: That is a lot of responsibility for a 16-year-old.

JW: It is. Not everyone is ready. Usually, if you are a seasonal at 16, you’ve been a junior lifeguard since the age of 8. So these guys just have it in them. I’m actually getting ready to go down to State Parks lifeguard training. This will be my first year as an instructor down there, and I’m bringing four junior lifeguards who want to be seasonals. It’s in Huntington Beach. Anyone who wears the State Parks reds goes through Huntington. It’s kind of a rite of passage. I feel like it’s one of the best lifeguard programs in the country. It’s 10-day lifeguard bootcamp. So, hopefully, when I get back we’ll have 11 seasonals.

HMB: The junior lifeguard program makes a lot of sense if you are a parent. We have this big beautiful hazard out there.

JW: Historically, our junior lifeguard program here started with, like, 10 kids. Now it’s 100 kids every session and I have to turn people away. It’s a beautiful thing. And for a kid growing up by the ocean, the program gives kids a lot more confidence in their world.

‘Little Dog’breed: Terrier mix

Age: Ageless

Love kindled the first time half Moon bay psychologist Mary beth grabon laid eyes on the little dog still healing from injuries that brought him to a vet on the other end of the state.

in autumn 2013, the 10-pound terrier mix was rescued from Southern California freeways. he’d been hit by a car, severely injuring both hind legs. A vet splinted the broken right hind leg, but the left one had to be amputated.

grabon saw a photo of the dog along with his story on Facebook.

The timing was uncanny. grabon was missing her late husband, Young Actors Workshop founder Auri Naggar, who had died in January 2011. She was longing for company when she saw the post.

She got in touch with the Atascadero veterinarian technician who posted the pho-to to Facebook, and in December 2013 the two met in Santa Cruz.

“it was love at first sight,” said grabon. “he was the sweetest dog.”

She named him “Little guy” and brought him home to heal. it didn’t take long.

“he just took over the house,” grabon said. “he was completely comfortable very soon. he has a really nice spirit — alert, friendly, eager.”

his friendliness extended to the household’s four cats. And once his broken bones healed and grabon got rid of the coverings over his head, he showed youthful bounce.

“You don’t feel he’s missing a leg,” grabon said. “he runs, he chases faster than the cats.”

when Lisa and Jason McCoy moved into their El Granada home in 2011, the master bedroom didn’t look much like a bedroom. For one thing, it was tiled.

For another, there was a set of French doors along the main wall leading out to the patio, preventing them from putting a bed or a nightstand there.

“The space wasn’t set up right,” said Lisa McCoy. “It was really strange.”

The McCoys brought in Bob Collihan of Coastside Cabinets to help them make the most of the space. The French doors were replaced with a window, the large soaking tub with a standard-sized bathtub and shower combo, and the tiled bedroom floor with carpet.

That was where the tricky part came in for Collihan and crew.

“They had ceramic tile floors throughout the space, and it was improperly glued down to a substandard underlayment,” Collihan said. “There was no waterproofing underneath. It was just a matter of time where it was going to fail.”

All the subflooring had to be redone to be brought up to code. The McCoys also got a walk-in closet and new tiling in the bathroom, which encompassed a glass mosaic pattern.

“I wanted it kind of beachy,” Lisa McCoy said, adding that the shiny blue of the new countertops and the rustic looking cabinets Collihan installed helped complete that theme.

The rooms were gutted and remodeled over a span of two and a half months. What the McCoys were left with was the master bedroom that Lisa had designed to a T.

“What was great about Bob is he did everything I asked,” Lisa McCoy said. “It turned out better than I pictured in my head.”

Collihan said it was easy working with the McCoy family, particularly because Lisa was organized from the get-go.

“She knew exactly what she wanted and it made my job a lot easier,” Collihan said.

Collihan advises that if you’re going without an interior designer for a remodel, follow in Lisa McCoy’s footsteps and do your homework.

“Give it a lot of consideration before you bring somebody in,” he said.

Pigeon Point lighthouse

On the night of June 6, 1853, the clipper ship Carrier Pigeon ran aground 500 feet offshore of the Central California coast. The area is now called Pigeon Point in her honor.

Built over 140 years ago, the 115-foot lighthouse is one of the tallest in America. Its five-wick lard oil lamp and first-order Fresnel lens, comprised of 1,008 prisms, was first lit at sun-set, Nov. 15, 1872. Although the lens is no longer in use, the lighthouse is still in active use as an aid to navigation.

While the actual lighthouse has been closed to the public since 2001 when a section of the railing fell off, the grounds remain open and an upclose viewing of the majestic land-mark can be had.

The rocky promontory provides sweeping views of the Pacific and it is a prime location for whale watching. Enjoy walking on the boardwalk and take the steps down to the secluded beach at Whaler’s Cove or head north to explore rich tide-pools and more beaches.

visitors can extend their trip by staying in the hostel located on the grounds and even enjoy a hot tub overlooking the ocean.

From Half Moon Bay, Pigeon Point is about 20 miles south along Highway 1, and there is parking directly on site. Half hour guided history walks around the lighthouse grounds are available 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Monday, except on rainy days.
