Lee Valley Regional Park provides a vast educational resource, offering environmental and heritage programmmes and a wide range of sport and leisure activities.

Discover our 10,000 acre classroom.

Environmental and heritage education programmes are delivered by our Youth and Schools Service. Each year over 25,000 people of all ages and abilities enjoy our outdoor learning experiences.

Our activities aim to engender a sense of ownership and understanding of the natural world, drawing on internationally important nature reserves and a wide array of species and habitats.

Our sports venues deliver activities which contribute to the school sports and PE curriculum as well as developing broader life skills through sport and physical activity.

The Youth and Schools Service has been awarded The Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge for their diverse range of programmes for all ages and abilities. All sessions are led by experienced staff who are checked by the Criminal Records Bureau.

Programmes last approximately two hours and full days can be made up by choosing two programmes. Activities will be tailored to suit the needs of your particular group. Please refer to the charges sheet for current prices.

Primary schools: Designed to help meet the requirements of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2. Many of the programmes are accompanied by pupil project books and teacher information sheets.

Youth groups: A wide range of fun, engaging activities that can cater for outdoor badge work and award schemes.

Explore the habitat of one of the rarest birds in the Lee Valley. Migrate to our bird hide and use binoculars to observe and record waterbird behaviour in this internationally important habitat.

Experience the amazing changes in plants during autumn. Use the wonder of nature to inspire your students. Pick and mix from a wide range of nature based art and craft activities, tailored to topics and seasons. Pupils take an investigative, hands on approach to explore colours and textures of natural materials within the park. Options can include: Lee Valley sprites, nature’s symmetry and habitat cocktail paints. Step back in time to the Victorian era to discover the waterway of the River Lee Navigation on a two hour boat trip. Take your inspiration from nature. Use the design process to create your own model of a marvellous minibeast from recycled material. Explore the park with our introduction to the exciting sport of orienteering. This fun fuelled competition allows groups to learn and reinforce important team building and map skills whilst challenging them to answer our nature quiz for extra points. Alternatively engage your students with the Lee Valley Challenge of a London 2012 Games fact finding mission. The class will be split into smaller groups, each of which must be accompanied by an adult.Session covers: Selecting and applying tactics, acquiring and developing PE and geographical skills.

Sensory safari Key subject: Science

Building on our Garden Sensory Adventure programme we are now pleased to offer pupils the chance to enjoy an exciting mix of environmental activities which use all of the senses to discover the delights of learning outdoors at three fantastic sites in the Lee Valley.

Try the feely bag challenge! Collect fallen treasures and explore colour and shape using magnifying glasses and colour fans. Be ‘all ears’ as you listen out for natural and human made sounds, test your sense of smell as you discover natural aromas and then take a look at your taste buds before you plant a seed to grow into something tasty! Experience the start of your milk’s journey to the supermarket shelf. This guided tour of our working dairy farm explores the crops we grow, how we look after our animals and wildlife, methods of milking and the farmer’s job. Discover one of the most amazing insects in the world. Follow this monster minibeast through its lifecycle. Survey where the eggs are laid, stream dip in the dragonfly nymphs’ habitat to find and identify aquatic creatures. Visit Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctuary and hopefully get a glimpse of the incredible adult insects. Mr Bowles and his Victorian garden Key subject: HistoryJoin us on an imaginary journey back to the Victorian period to learn about the fascinating life and work of notable Plantsman Mr Bowles.

Explore the history of this beautiful site through a diversity of experiential learning activities. Pupils will discover what Victorian people would have worn, handle historical gardening tools, play a game enjoyed by Victorian children and pretend to be a Victorian plant collector. They will also find out who the ‘Bowles Boys’ were and take on some of their duties as they tend to the garden and plant a seed. Discover why people and the planet need plants. Find plants hidden in everyday items and explore their role in food chains. A unique opportunity to compare and contrast the natural features of the meandering Old River Lea with the straight River Lee Navigation. Seed to supper Key subject: Science

Grow your pupil’s knowledge of plant lifecycles as they experience the journey from seed to supper. Pupils will have the opportunity to handle fruit and vegetables and study the tiny seeds from which they grow, learn about a seeds needs of life by playing the ‘Seed Tig’ game, discover plant variation by taking part in a scavenger hunt, pretend to be a pollinator in the Pollination Game and then plant a seed to take home. Bring the water cycle to life by discovering the ‘Great Stink’ of 1858 and the effect of dirty water on the population of London. Orienteering Key subjects: Geography, PE, Team Building, ICT

Orienteering is the ultimate activity to help your group bond and gain confidence. Working in groups, students learn the fundamental principles of navigation. Put your team to the test on one of our three orienteering programmes.

Classic orienteering Learn the essential skills using a map and compass as you explore our permanent orienteering course. Test your tactical planning with our score course.

Lee Valley Challenge Orienteering with a twist. Engage your students with the additional challenge of a London 2012 Games fact finding mission. Students are encouraged to embrace the Olympic values as they compete in River Lee Country Park, home of Lee Valley White Water Centre.

GPS Orienteering Navigate our permanent orienteering course using state of the art touch screen GPS machines. GPS orienteering also offers students the chance to develop new information and communication technology skills. This programme is 2½ hours.

The Youth and Schools Service is experienced at working with special needs students. We offer a diverse range of activities which can be adjusted to suit a wide range of learning needs, from mild to profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Discover Lee Valley Regional Park in bite size portions. Lee Valley Park Farms consists of two farms. Hayes Hill Farm, a visitor attraction with over 200 farm animals including rare breeds and Holyfield Hall Farm, a working dairy farm. The farms are well equipped for school visits with free car and coach parking, picnic areas, indoor play areas, toilets and hand washing facilities.

Myddelton House GardensEnfield, Middlesex EN2 9HGCreated by the famous plantsman, E.A.Bowles (1865 – 1954), the gardens have been undergoing restoration since 1984 and have recently restored the Kitchen Garden area to its former glory along with creating a visitor centre with museum and café. The gardens offer a safe and unique educational site with free car and coach parking and toilets.

Transformed from a series of old gravel pits into an attractive range of habitats, River Lee Country Park comprises a number of internationally important habitats for wetland wildlife. Wide, surfaced paths make much of River Lee Country Park accessible to all. The main park entrances benefit from toilets and free car and coach parking provision.

Tottenham MarshesTottenham, London N17 0XDThis site offers over 100 acres of open space with the benefit of free car and coach parking, toilets and a classroom. Large areas of the marshes are managed for nature conservation with wildflower meadows, woodlands and scrub, a wildlife garden and a permanent orienteering course.

WaterWorks Nature Reserve Leyton, London E10 7NU

This site is a wonderful nature reserve. The Essex Filter Beds on this site were once used to clean Victorian London’s drinking water and have now been transformed into a unique nature reserve with an unusual bird hide. The centre has a classroom, toilets and free car and coach parking.

Sporting activities Schools, colleges and youth groupsWe want to ensure that our sports venues and sports development programmes are accessed by as many schools and community groups across the region as possible.

Our staff are on hand to help develop specific sports programmes and encourage young people to be more physically active and achieve learning through sport.

We play a key role in creating lasting legacy sports projects and education programmes at a number of Olympic and Paralympic sports venues across the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park including the Lee Valley VeloPark and Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.

We are committed to using the inspiration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to ensure that the community make maximum use of all our sporting venues and continue to use the park as a learning zone and a place to enjoy.

We welcome the opportunity to support schools in helping to access our sports provision and in partnership with National Governing Bodies, can provide bespoke activities and potential links to funding through our Sports Development Team.

Athletics Lee Valley Athletics CentreOur magnificent athletics centre provides a friendly and flexible approach to developing athletics opportunities.

Training venue to a number of world class athletes, the centre prides itself on creating a welcoming environment for school and community groups as well as support to some of the leading British athletes.

An inspirational learning classroom, our indoor and outdoor facilities will add spark to any PE lesson and can provide opportunities all year round. The venue has catered for numerous educational bodies since its opening in 2007, with many schools holding their sports days at the venue. We can offer everything from simple track hire to coaching and event support.

Our equestrian centre provides riding sessions and activities which cater for a range of age groups and abilities, in a safe, fun and professional environment. Our British Horse Society accredited centre has experience of delivering specific all inclusive riding sessions for schools across the region.

The centre has the benefit of both indoor and outdoor floodlit arenas ensuring activities run whatever the weather. All our horses and ponies are chosen for their temperament and are well trained so that they are ideally suited for school sessions. The centre is ideally suited to combine learning activity with horse riding, with dedicated pony care sessions which include handling and grooming, plus specialist tuition for NVQ’s and British Horse Society exams. The centre is a regional base for ‘Riding for the Disabled’ and can cater for students with additional needs. Our staff will be happy to answer any school booking enquiries and make your visit to the venue a memorable one.

Lee Valley Ice Centre offers an international sized (56m X 26m) ice pad that creates a magnificent facility for up to 750 skaters, with additional spectator seating for up to 700 people.

Our venue caters for all abilities of skaters from beginners through to elite. If you are interested in ice skating lessons in London, there’s no better location. The centre offers a range of learn to skate courses as well as public skating sessions that suit all ages and abilities.

Why not take the opportunity to introduce something that little bit different to the school day and bring your class or school to the centre for a great day out. Our schools ‘Learn to Skate’ lessons are run in weekly blocks that follow the school term timetable (courses are a minimum of six weeks). These half hour group lessons with one or more of our qualified instructors, includes skate hire and a record of achievement booklet to record the student’s progress. Our venue staff will be more than happy to talk through any enquiries you may have to ensure your school booking runs smoothly.

Lee Valley White Water Centre is open to schools and community groups wanting to get a taste of paddlesport at this unique Olympic venue. With two white water courses, the Legacy Loop and the more challenging Olympic Standard Competition Course plus a purpose built lake, there really are opportunities for everyone. So whether you would like to take a class or group rafting, or simply enjoy a coached canoe and kayak session on the flat water, the venue is always keen to make your visit a memorable one. Safety is paramount with qualified raft guides and canoe/kayak coaches on hand. All safety equipment is provided, as well as full risk assessments for all activities. The centre has been certified by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA). Minimum numbers apply for some activities at this venue, as well as some age restrictions.
