The Verona Area School District is committed to providing opportunities for a summer experience that is filled with academic exploration, enrichment experiences, and curricular reinforcement for all students. The courses listed within have been proposed and designed to be as enriching as they are engaging.
As you read through the 2019 summer offerings with your child, you will find a listing and course description of courses for grades K-12. When registering your student, please make sure you are selecting courses upon your child's CURRENT grade for the 2018-19 academic year. Please note that these courses are in addition to many of the same opportunities offered in years past, which will also continue this summer. Help fill your child's summer with learning, discovery, and fun.

available at all school offices for those without computer access. Class requests submitted
by paper registration will be added by VASD staff during the first day of registration.

Glacier Edge will be the location for Elementary Summer School programming and Savanna Oaks Middle School will be the location for Middle School programming. Classes will range in size from 18 to 36 students, depending upon the number of instructors for each course.
Interested teachers have proposed courses that incorporate literacy, language, Math, problem solving and technology experiences in their offerings. These summer opportunities may also include time for drama, arts, hands-on investigations, and experiential learning. All courses will be offered by certified teachers at no cost to students, with the exception of a small materials fee for certain classes using significant materials. All fees will be waived for students receiving free/reduced lunch during the school year.

School buses will be made available for students needing transportation to school through Badger Bus Company. Families will need to inform the district at the time of registration if bus transportation is needed. Badger Bus Company will arrange routes along with pick-up and drop off points to efficiently transport our students with busing needs.

Students attending Elementary/Middle School Summer School must be available to attend for all days of their chosen session. If your child is unable to do so due to other summer commitments, please do not register for the session. Your cooperation in this enables us to maintain full class-sizes and provide more opportunities to all VASD students. K-8 Sum m er School 2019
The Verona Area High School will be offering some summer school electives, each worth a .5 credit towards graduation. Space within these classes is limited to 30 students per course.
Session/Tim esThere is only one session for VAHS for-credit courses, which runs from July 8 to August 2. Students meet Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Please contact course instructors for more information.
Bus Transpor t at ionSchool buses will be made available for students needing transportation to school through Badger Bus Company. Chess is a game that has been played for hundreds of years. Chess teaches so many valuable skills such as strategy, focus, concentration, and patience. This summer school chess class is for everyone, from kids who are just beginning play to ones who have been playing for years. We will learn the rules, different strategies, good sportsmanship, and play lots of chess. We will finish with a tournament where someone will be named Summer School Champion! Descr ipt ion: During the first week of AP Language and Composition, all students are required to write an essay about "Walden and Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau. This classic text can, at times, be challenging. This enrichment summer course is designed to help support students as they enter AP Language and Composition and work through the summer assignment. As a class and individually, students will tackle the major elements of the summer assignment and analyze the potential essay questions. This course will also supplement students' understanding of key components of AP Language and Composition, which includes preparing students for rhetorical analysis.
Fee: Students will need to have purchased the book "Walden and Civil Disobedience" before this course begins. This is the required text for the course, and all students will have to buy this before the semester begins. If you require financial assistance, check in with the main office to obtain the book.

Descr ipt ion: Anyone who is currently registered to take AP Psychology is encouraged to take this class. Students that attend will be able to start and finish their summer work as well as get it graded immediately. This will allow students to start off their AP class with a solid academic grade. Additionally, Ms. Domres will work with individual students on skills such as reading our college level text, proper note-taking, and best ways to study in AP Psychology. It will be fun, flexible, and productive. This summer, the camp is being offered over two weeks for 6 days. However, students only need to attend ANY FOUR DAYS. Additionally, students who attend the full four days will receive an extra credit grade boost during first semester. If you need more than four days to finish your summer assignment, you are welcome to attend all days that it is offered. An A+ will be held to provide more information prior to the end of the school year.

Descr ipt ion: Anyone who is currently registered to take AP U.S. History (APUSH) is encouraged to take this class. Students will be introduced to the APUSH themes, practice historical thinking skills, develop writing skills, and have an opportunity to work on and complete the summer assignment. This class is especially encouraged if this is your first AP class and/or your first history AP class; it will also be beneficial for those students who want an introduction to APUSH concepts and need more opportunities to develop their writing skills. The camp is being offered over two weeks for 6 days. However, students only need to attend ANY FOUR DAYS. Additionally, students who attend four days will receive an extra credit grade boost during first semester. Students are more than welcome to attend all eight days ? each day will be focusing on a specific component of the course ? historical thinking skills, writing skills, and the APUSH themes ? these will be shared with the students at an A+ session at the end of the school year so students can plan accordingly.

Descr ipt ion: This is an ONLINE course. Students will have an option to come in and work with the instructor if desired. Students who have successfully taken the first semester of Advanced Algebra and who want to take PreCalculus or College Algebra in the Fall are encouraged to enroll. Students who want to refine their Advanced Algebra skills are also encouraged to enroll. Learning can start early "unofficially" in June with built-in formative assessments. Summative assessment will need to be taken on-site with the instructor. The topics of this course include trigonometry, exponentials, logarithms, sequences, series, rational functions, and rational equations. Students who sign-up will be requested for an A+ session in early June where the online format and flexible due dates will be clearly explained.

Descr ipt ion: This is an ONLINE course, which will introduce students to several essential topics in the study of psychology including: Approaches & Methodology, Neuroscience Basics, Psychological Disorders, Sensation & Perception, and Theories of Development. This is an excellent prep course for students that plan to take AP Psych senior year. It will pre-teach some of the concepts that students tend to struggle with. This is also a great option for those students who are interested in psychology, but don?t have time for or interest taking it at the Advanced Placement level. Students who sign up will be requested for an A+ session where the online format will be clearly explained. The course will run over 4 weeks with 4 turn in deadlines for work. Teacher(s) will be available for in-person help & questions one day a week; if a student?s grade is below a 60%, they will be required to attend summer school on the assigned day for drop-in help.

Managing Your Financial Life

Descr ipt ion: This course explores a range of strategies for growing a small amount of wealth into a much larger amount of wealth. A variety of methods for starting this process of wealth creation ? with the largest emphasis placed on the stock market ? are examined. In addition, other investments such as real estate, bonds, mutual funds, and retirement funds are embedded into course projects. After completing this course, students will be in a better position to assist others with financial issues. This course may count for .5 math credit toward high school graduation, as long as a student completes 2.0 credits in the math department. Postsecondary institutions and NCAA may not recognize this class for math credit.

Descr ipt ion: This is an ONLINE course, which offers students a unique way to understand U.S. history though films and will enhance your knowledge of significant events in United States history. With each film, students will examine the significance of the time period through primary and secondary sources and analyze the accuracy of the film in representing U.S. history. We will look at the context in which the film was made and analyze various perspectives and biases. A signed permission slip will be required to view the films. Films used in previous courses include The Patriot, Glory, and Dances with Wolves. Students who sign up will be requested for an A+ session where the online format will be clearly explained. The course will run over 4 weeks with 4 turn in deadlines for work. Teacher(s) will be available for in-person help & questions one day a week; if a student?s grade is below a 60%, they will be required to attend summer school on the assigned day for drop-in help.

Cuando realicen las inscr ipciones para su hijo(a), asegúrese de seleccionar los cursos que cor responden al grado que su hijo(a) cursa ACTUALMENTE durant e est e ciclo escolar 2018-19. La inscripción a través de internet (en línea) comenzaráel miércoles 17 de abril a partir de las 5:00 de la tarde y terminará el viernes 26 de abril a las 11:59 de la noche. Tendremos disponible copias en papel del Formulario de Inscripción para la Escuela de Verano (Summer School Registration Form) en las oficinas de las escuelas para quienes no tengan acceso a una computadora. La información provista en dichos Formularios de Inscripción, en donde indicarán su selección de cursos de verano, se ingresará por el personal de VASD el primer día de inscripción. El distrito se esforzará por proveer igualdad de acceso a todas las familias para inscribir a sus hijos en los cursos de la escuela de verano.

Escuela de Verano 2019: Kindergar t en a 8º grado (Pr im ar ia y Secundar ia)
La Escuela Primaria Glacier Edge será el lugar en donde se llevarán a cabo las clases de verano para los estudiantes de primaria y la Escuela Savanna Oaks será el lugar en donde se llevarán a cabo las clases de verano para los estudiantes de secundaria y aquellos que hayan recibido invitación. El tamaño de las clases será de entre 18-36 estudiantes, dependiendo del número de maestros disponibles para cada curso.
Los maestros interesados han propuesto cursos para la escuela de verano que incorporan la lectoescritura, las matemáticas, resolución de problemas y la tecnología. Estas oportunidades de verano, también, pueden incluir tiempo para drama, arte, practicar la realización de investigaciones y el aprendizaje experimental. Todos los cursos se impartirán por maestros certificados sin ningún costo para los alumnos, con excepción de una pequeña cuota para los materiales en aquellas clases que usan una cantidad significativa de material. Se exonerarán todaslas cuotas a los estudiantes que reciben almuerzo gratis o a precio reducido durante el transcurso del ciclo escolar.
Sesiones/Horarios
La sesión de 2019 para las clases de verano para las escuelas primarias y secundarias consistirá en 5 días a la semana durante un periodo de hasta 3 semanas, desde el 8 de julio hasta el 26 de julio de 2019 de 8:30-11:00 am.
La Dejada y Recogida de los Estudiantes
Los estudiantes de primaria se dejarán en la entrada de la Escuela Primaria Glacier Edge. Todos los estudiantes de secundaria tienen que reportarse en la entrada de la Escuela Secundaria Savanna Oaks. Transporte Escolar
Los autobuses escolares, cuyo servicio está a cargo de la compañía de autobuses Badger Bus, estarán disponibles para los alumnus que necesiten transporte a la escuela. Las familias deben informarle al distrito si necesitan este servicio cuando hagan la inscripción. Asistencia Escolar
Los estudiantes que participen en la escuela de verano al nivel primaria y secundaria deben estar presentes todos los días de la sesión que se ha elegido para ellos. Escuela de Verano 2019: (Preparat or ia)
La Escuela Preparatoria del Área de Verona ofrecerá una pequeña cantidad de cursos electivos. Cada uno de ellos contará por 0.5 (medio) crédito para los créditos necesarios para graduarse. El cupo en estos cursos está limitado a 30 estudiantes por curso.
Sesión/Horario
Solamente hay una sesión para los cursos de la Escuela Preparatoria del Área de Verona (VAHS), la cual se llevará a cabo del 8 de julio al 2 de agosto. Los estudiantes se reunirán de lunes a viernes de 8:00 de la mañana hasta las 12:00 de la tarde. Por favor comuníquese con los maestros para más información.
Transporte Escolar

2019 Summer Drama Class Offered At SOMS
A summer drama class for students who are currently in grades 4-8 will be offered at Savanna Oaks Middle School this summer (this is a change from the usual location for this class because Badger Ridge will be under construction this summer!). The two-week class will be taught by Nate Campbell, a Verona School District staff member and director of the Badger Ridge, Core Knowledge and Savanna Oaks Drama Clubs. Nate has directed over 180 productions at the middle school level during the past 27 years. Participants in the class will learn the various aspects of theatre through the production of a one-act play. Participants will receive instruction in the basics of stage movement and blocking, character development, make-up design and costume design. The class culminates in the performance of a one-act play. This class has been offered numerous times over the past 23 summers with terrific results! Students who have taken the class previously may take the class again! Two separate sessions will be offered. Session I will meet from 8:30 to 12:00 noon from July 8th – July 18th. Session II will meet from 12:00 noon to 3:30 p.m. from July 8th – July 18th. There is no class on July 12th. There will be an evening performance for Sessions I and II on July 19th. All performances are free and open to the public. The cost of the class is $100.00. This camp is designed to teach the skills necessary for both Flag & Tackle Football
For students Entering Grades 4 – 9 **Fundamentals Camp: 4th & 5th graders will concentrate on all the skills needed to become a better
football player. Running, pursuit, ball skills and game play will be emphasized.
**Strategies Camp: 6th & 7th graders will put skills into action using individual, team, and
situational practices. Strategies and game play will also be emphasized.
**High School Prep Camp: 8th & 9th graders will work on skills using a typical high school practice routine.
The camper will participate in individual, small group, team, and special team segments that will culminate with game and tournament play. This is a great camp to build bonds with future teammates and get prepared for High School Football!
WELCOME: This Non-padded camp is a four-day skill development camp with an emphasis on the
skills needed to be a successful football player at any position. In each camp, game and tournament play is included. Emphasis is on teamwork, sportsmanship and FUN!

FLYING V’s TRACK & FIELD CLUB Boys & Girls Entering Grades 3 and up
The Flying V’s Track Club is offered to give developmental instruction to young athletes who want to learn more
about the sport of track and field AND give more in-depth instruction to more experienced track athletes.

sport of track and field in a team atmosphere. We pride ourselves in quality instruction keeping approximately a 1/15
coach to athlete ratio, unlike some track clubs that have about three coaches for 100+ athletes.
The Flying V’s have had success at all levels of competition, from beginners to national qualifiers at USATF or AAU
Nationals. We emphasize individual improvement with running times and jumping/throwing distances during the
season to help to build confidence and an enjoyment for the sport of track and field.
The Flying V’s Track Club calendar can be found on our website, which will be updated throughout the spring as
meets are confirmed. In general, practices are Monday and Tuesday nights with a local meet on Wednesday or

• Club practices begin the first week of summer (Mon. June 17th) from 4:00-5:30pm for students entering grades 3-
9. Athletes in grades 10 and up warm-up on their own from 5-5:30, then work with coaches from 5:30-6:15.

addition to the Monday and Tuesday practices (see calendar).

the four competitive strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) as well as
introduction/refinement of starts and turns. Swimmers will be coached by the high school coaches from the
Verona Area-Mount Horeb boys and girls swim teams. All practices will be held at the Verona Area
Natatorium.

Rick is currently the head coach of the Boys Tennis
Team. He is PTR Certified . The teams he has
coached have won Badger Conference and Big 8
Championships and have advanced to the WIAA
State Tournament. The Wildcats have been ranked
as high as # 2 in the State Boys Tennis rankings. He
has had players ranked as high as # 1 in Individual
State. He has several players that have and are
playing at the collegiate level. Including his Current
# 1 Singles player who just signed with the
Marquette Golden Eagles Men’s Tennis Team.

Mark is currently the head girls coach at VAHS and
the Head Pro at Seminole Pool & Tennis Club. He
was the 2012 Girls Tennis Coach of the Year in
Wisconsin. He was the number one singles player
at the UW-La Crosse, a national qualifier, and a
former teaching pro at Valley View Fitness & Rac-
quet Club. His girls team was the first Verona team
to win a Big 8 conference championship. He has
had several players receive all state honors and play
collegiately.

YOUTH CAMP: Grades 8 and Under
Wednesday, July 31st through Friday, August 2nd 3:30PM - 5:30PM Coaches will be looking to have more personal time with the campers. Camp will be open to all levels of play in this age group. Coaches will be able to work with players just beginning volleyball as well as experienced
players. To provide an improved camp experience, there will be a cap of 70 campers in the 2019 Youth Camp
HIGH SCHOOL CAMP: Grades 9-12
Wednesday, July 31st through Friday, August 2nd 6:00PM - 9:00PM
Coaches will break down the skills and help players refine their talents to help prepare the athletes at all levels of high school competition. The HS camp will focus on reviewing basic individual skills along with advanced
position-specific techniques. Emphasis will also be placed on offensive and defensive systems and strategies, as well as team ball control.
The High School Camp is for Verona Area High School students ONLY.
Athletes should register for the camp that represents the grade they will be entering in the Fall of 2019

Wildcat Soccer Camps 2019 These camps are designed to teach individual and team skills in the game of soccer. For youth camps, players will learn basic ball skills and tactics of soccer as well as learn to enjoy and love the game. A new skill will be learned each day with games designed to emphasize those skills. In the Premier Camp, individual ball skills will be stressed as well as more advanced tactics of the game. Older players will also learn and prepare for the high school soccer experience. Each day will conclude with competitive small sided matches. Teamwork and Sportsmanship will be a focus during all aspects of all camps.
COED Youth Camp (For boys and girls entering grades K-5) June 24-27 from 10:30 -12:00 p.m.
