Verona Area High School has a new bell schedule for the 2015-16 school year. On Mondays, students meet in Advisory with their advisor. Advisors are teachers and school counselors. Each Advisory is made up of 15 or 16 students from 9th to 12th grades. On alternating Advisory Mondays, students sign up for A+ offerings for Tuesday through Friday. The remaining Advisory Mondays are devoted academic planning and conferencing. VAHS offers a wide variety of over 120 A+ offerings each week. Choices include Instructional Study halls in every subject, enrichment opportunities like Science Club and Student Council, and wellness options like Relaxation techniques or basketball. The full list can be viewed here.

Advisors led students through a variety of icebreakers and get-to-know-you activities at the beginning of the school year. They are also getting to know students as learners. Advisors check student grades in preparation for helping students sign up for A+ offerings. On several dates during the school year, VAHS will run a “Skinny” schedule. Inserting this schedule allows us to balance Day1/Day 2. It also allows flexibility for short weeks and special programming like Homecoming.

What is 8th or 9th hour?

If you've received an automated attendance call saying your student was absent 8th or 9th hour, you might be wondering what that means. Our 8th/9th hour is actually our A+/Advisory hour! So if you receive a call about

your student missing either of those hours, it means they missed either Advisory or A+ during the day. Please check your PowerSchool for confirmation.

Page 4: Dates to Note - Verona Area School Districtverona.k12.wi.us/UserFiles/Servers/Server_158847... · Dates to Note: VERONA AREA HIGH SCHOOL APRIL 2016 NEWSLETTER 300 Richard St. Verona,

Dear VAHS students and families: It has been a very exciting start to the 2015-2016 school year, especially with the roll out of our new block schedule with the Advisory/A+ period. Amazing things are happening in the classrooms during A+, and we want to keep that momentum going throughout the end of this school year and into next school year. We have decided that the previous application we were using to schedule A+ was not working for all the unique opportunities we offer at VAHS. Instead, we had our PowerSchool support company build us a custom feature in PowerSchool to meet our needs. They have come up with our new Resource Scheduling feature, which we will be using starting January 29, 2016. Resource Scheduling has some great functions. It is built directly into PowerSchool, so students and parents can see a student’s A+ schedule for the week from their PowerSchool account. The display is colorful and easy to read, eliminating some of the confusion for students about when they go to A+ versus when they go to lunch. It is also much more responsive to our students’ needs, and automatically hides offerings students would not qualify for. Finally, because it is in PowerSchool, it can be accessed at anytime, rather than having students refer to an email with their schedule in it. On the back of this letter is a “How To” tutorial for logging in and viewing a student’s A+ schedule with the new Resource Scheduling feature. If you need help logging into PowerSchool, please contact Aiden Rohwer-Nutter, our PowerSchool secretary, at the number listed below. Thank you so much for your great feedback this year, and I hope you will enjoy this new feature as much as we are. Best regards, Pam Hammen Principal Verona Area High School 608-845-4410 [email protected] Aiden Rohwer-Nutter Registrar Verona Area High School 608 845-4408 [email protected]

Career Days—April 19 – 20, 2016

For many years, Verona Area High School has offered its students taking English 11 and English Literacy an exceptional educational opportunity to explore possible career interests. All participants in the Career Unit will get the opportunity to learn more about a profession that they might want to explore more in the future. During this unit students learn how to:

Research careers Research education and training opportunities

Write a résumé Create a cover letter Participate in a professional meeting/interview

Write a thank you letter

It is a massive undertaking to match all 170+ student participants with someone from the work force, but we pride ourselves on finding a match for every student. This year, to allow time for career exploration & to avoid the end of the school year rush, Career Days will be held on: April 19-20 2016 – English 11 and English Literacy Students We are always looking for volunteers to interview our students and/or assist with day-of coordination. If you would like to participate in this rewarding event, please contact: Amy Moschkau Career Days Coordinator [email protected] 608-845-4482

SENIOR PARENTS NEEDED FOR THE 2016 SENIOR CLASS TRIP

The Verona Area High School Senior Class Trip this year is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1 at the Green Lake Convention Center. All seniors will attend the class trip which for the past 25 years has become a valued and enjoyable tradition and experience.

These are the committee’s needed for the trip:

Chaperones: This committee is responsible for finding approximately 10 parents that are interested in attending the senior trip and riding the bus to Green Lake. At the park they will also be asked to assist in serving food. Breakfast: This committee is responsible for finding a group of parents to assist in gathering food and purchasing food to feed the students at Harriet Park the day of the trip. These parents would not have to attend the trip. Lunch-Dinner: This committee is responsible to contact parents in a letter home on what food is needed for the trip. They plan how the food will get to the park, the ordering and collecting of food, the transportation of food on the day of the trip for lunch and the serving of food at the park. Dinner is provided by a local Subway. Prizes: This committee is responsible for purchasing prizes and/or donations. At least two people will have to be at the park that day to hand out prizes. Communication: This committee is responsible for communicating in two or three letters to parents about the trip. A disk is already done and all that is involved is changing dates and times. You will also get assistance from the high school office staff. This person would not have to go on the trip that day. T-Shirts: Finding a printer and putting in the t-shirt order. Mr. Verhelst picks the design and will get all sizes to you. You are also responsible to be at Harriett Park on the day of the trip to distribute the t-shirts. I ask all senior parents to consider stepping up so this trip can be a continued success for the benefit for the senior class.

Dates of the 2016 Senior Class Trip Meetings:

April 6-April 20-May 11-May 25. The meetings are all on Wednesday, 1 hour in length 6:30-7:30 in Room D137 at the high school.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the first meeting. Greg Verhelst

MARCH 2016

Symposium & Research Fair

“I liked that we got to choose our topic and go in any direction we wanted to. Because you can be creative!” -Allison Blessing

Freshmen English students participated in a day of learning and sharing for our URX Symposium and Research Fair on Tuesday, March 22 and Wednesday, March 23. Getting here required a great deal of work on the students’ parts. First, students researched a topic that interested them, acquiring research skills such as searching databases, note taking, paraphrasing, quoting, and annotating. Second, students synthesized their research into four different genres of writing and multimedia in order to meet several different academic writing and publishing standards. Finally, students put all of their pieces together by designing and creating their own portfolio website. Ms. Diaz, Ms. Grant, Mr. Fidler, Mr. Filerman, Ms. Hardin, Ms. Homan, Ms. Ryan, & Ms. Voss
