YOUTH OPTIONS PROGRAM AND DEADLINES FOR STUDENTS:

The Youth Options Program allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll at an institution

of higher education in Wisconsin. Under the program, certain approved courses may be

taken, without cost, that lead to credit that can be applied toward high school graduation,

as well as toward post-secondary programs. A student who intends to enroll in the

University of Wisconsin at Madison, Edgewood College, or Madison Area Technical College

in the spring semester of the school year 2014-2015 must adhere to the following timelines:

1. Make an appointment with your guidance counselor to discuss your plans and choose

courses that work with your graduation pathway.

2. Contact the Admission Office of the college/university or vocational/technical college

from which admission is being sought to determine that application and admission

process required by that institution.

3. By October 2, 2014:

Notify your counselor at Verona Area High School of your intention to attend a college or university named above for the spring semester of the school year 2014-15 under this

program. Use Form PI-8700A which can be secured from your student’s counselor or by going to the website http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/youthoptions/index.html

Please complete the form carefully and turn in to your counselor. Select a course(s) that

is either different from any course, or is an extension (higher level) of a course the high school offers. Fifteen credits per student is the maximum allowed each semester.

4. By November 14, 2014, you will be notified of the action taken by the Board of Education as to whether or not the course(s) you selected will be awarded high school credit and

how much credit you will be awarded. You may register only for courses that have been approved by the Board of Education.

5. If the Board of Education denies either the desired courses or

the number of high school credits awarded, the pupil may

appeal the school board’s decision to the state superintendent

of schools within 30 days after the receipt of the school board’s

decision.

If you have any questions regarding the Youth Options Program, please contact your high

school counselor by dialing 845-4430.

Athletic Fees and Booster Clubs, by Mark Kryka, Athletic and Activities Director

Athletic fees are primarily used to cover transportation costs. In 2003, after a three year freeze in

the athletic budget, athletics were told to cut $50,000.00 from a $113000.00 budget. At that time,

transportation costs, official fees, uniform costs, equipment costs, athletic trainer costs, and

tournament entry fees all increased, and have continued to do so. Hence, the athletic fees are used to

cover the areas where the budget falls short. Following the cost of transportation, athletic fees are

used to replace uniforms, pay officials and so on. Since this is always a tight situation, booster clubs

work to support and supplement individual programs.

Booster clubs have become a very important part of the athletics program. As the athletic budget has

had to cover many of the increases in areas listed above, with a limited budget, teams have taken on

more expenses that could no longer be covered. Many of the boosters do ask for a yearly booster fee

which helps pay for things that the budget does not cover, and most provide an itemized list of what

the fee is used for. It may pay for additional coaches, practice gear, hats, shirts and team meals after

contests. Parents are encouraged to participate in the booster activities to enjoy a better sense of

what the booster clubs do and enjoy the work to promote their child’s activity.

Seniors who purchased a Parking Pass may pick up their permit in the main office during the first week of school!

September 2014 VAHS Wildcats

Greetings VAHS families, The Counseling staff is excited to welcome your student(s) back to

school! During this time, students and families often have a lot of questions about making adjustments to class schedules. The Counseling team will be making schedule adjustments based on the following policy.

SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICY All schedule adjustments must be made with the student’s grade-level counselor and may require administra-tive approval. Space in courses is limited, and schedule adjustments may only be considered if space is avail-able. Adjustments are not typically allowed after the first three days of the semester and usually only for pur-poses of remediation or to meet graduation and admission requirements. Students who request a schedule change after three days of the semester have passed will be dropped with an “F” (Fail) or a “W” (Withdrawal) depending on the circumstances and reasons for the schedule change. Verona Area High School schedules each student with a counselor in an effort to ensure that placement is as accurate as possible. Additionally, this helps us keep requested courses at the forefront. Course enrollments impact recruitment and assignment of staff, as well, as the purchasing of supplies and materials. Due to these facts, it is necessary to establish formal scheduling procedures. Please note that schedule changes will be made ONLY for the following reasons: *Failure of the student to meet proper course prerequisites *A different course is needed as a result of failure or deficiency toward graduation requirements *Class conflicts (two classes scheduled during the same period) *Recommendation of a post-secondary institution and mandatory for admission consideration *Desire to strengthen a schedule and not take a study hall *Requests a study hall and does not have one within their schedule *Completed a course during summer school, or through correspondence work and a class is no longer needed (official documentation from the institution where the course was taken is needed for any level of considera-tion to be given toward such a request) *Teacher recommendation that confirms the original placement was not appropriate *Extenuating circumstances that do not fall into a category noted above must be submitted in writing to your grade level counselor. All appeals must be signed by a parent/guardian before they will be considered. Your counselor will review and determine if the appeal will be brought before an administrator for final considera-tion. Appeals will only be presented by a counselor. Schedules adjustments will NOT be considered or allowed for the following reasons: * Student wishes to change to improve grade point average * Student states that the class isn’t what one thought it would be or one doesn’t like the class *Student states that the class is getting too hard *Student states that they have changed their mind *Student has concerns with the teacher assignment *Student is unhappy with the lunch period assignment *Student has concerns relating to members of a given class *Student desires to have the same teacher all year or class the same period all year *Student desires to have a release period/study hall/class or a responsibility pass during a specific period Schedule Changes after the Schedule Adjustment Period Any withdrawals from courses after the first three days of class in a given semester will be reported as an “F”, unless that withdrawal is recommended by the instructor or counselor; due to inappropriate placement or ex-tenuating circumstances supported by the counselor or; brought to a building administrator for approval. The high school building administrator’s decision is FINAL on any schedule change requests.

VAHS THEATRE OPENS SEASON WITH

Godspell VAHS Theatre Arts will present the thrilling and energetic musical production of Godspell by Stephen Schwartz, September 18th – 21st, 2014 in the VAHS Performing Arts Center. Auditions for the VAHS Theatre production were held in May and a talented cast of veteran performers and new faces to the VAHS stage began rehearsals in August, preparing the show for performance.

Students featured in the production include Nathan Lucas (Jesus) and Alex Roller (John the Baptist/Judas), supported by an ensemble of VAHS student performers. Verona Senior, Carmen Berkan, will stage manage the production. Cast members began rehearsing on August 11th, participating in a two-week summer theatre camp that focused on training the performers in dance, voice, and staging. In addition, a student technical crew has been constructing scenery during the camp under the technical direction of VAHS alumnus Danny Halminiak. The production will feature costumes designed by VAHS alumni, Kendra Johnson. The show also features the work of guest designer John Dolphin who will be acting as lighting designer. The production will be directed by Steven J Nibbe with alumnus Taylor Nibbe as production assistant. Judy Georgeson, choral director at VAHS, will be the vocal music director with the help of rehearsal accom-panist Maeghann Proper. Eric Anderson will prepare and conduct the pit orchestra and VAHS Alumnus Sarah Bartlett returns as choreographer for yet another production, having previously choreographed thirteen VAHS musical productions. A modern re-telling of the story of Jesus, Godspell is told through the teachings in the Bible to create the uplifting and exciting storyline. As told by Music Theater International, “A small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques, and hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville is em-ployed as the story of Jesus's life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus's messages of kindness, tolerance, and love come vibrantly to life.” Popular songs written by Stephen Schwartz, such as – Day by Day, We Beseech Thee, Bless the Lord, and many others – help to create the energetic vibe felt throughout the entire show. Many talented high school students make up the cast of this show, and have the opportunity to show their talents in voice, dance, and acting. A show that has continued to touch audiences, this is one you don’t want to miss! Reserved tickets for the production are $12.00 for adults and $7.00 for students and can be obtained by calling the VAHS Theatre box office at 845-4488.
