COLLEGE PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
GLENEAGLES OPEN NIGHT Gleneagles on show! Over 120 families attended our Open Night on Tuesday 19
th April 2016. Throughout the evening,
prospective students and their families were able learn about the school via displays and activities showcasing Gleneagles educational programs and services. Families were able to see the school first-hand through personal tours guided by enthusiastic and friendly Student Leaders. Hands-on activities allowed the children to see how to create elephants toothpaste in the Science Lab, learn about the maths of a chocolate frog, play games in the gym and taste treats baked by students in the Home Economics classes. Staff received positive feedback from parents and children who said they enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the College and were impressed by the range of programs and services available at Gleneagles. Student volunteers and staff were essential in pulling off the night’s festivities and we send our thanks to them. Student volunteers are listed on Page 4 of this Newsletter. If any parents were unable to attend Open Night and would like further information about the wide range of education programs offered at Gleneagles or to arrange a school tour, please contact the College on Tel 9708 1319.
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Parent/Teacher interviews were held on Tuesday, 26
th April
2016. The sessions proved to be very well attended and many productive conversations were held regarding the progress of our students. It was pleasing to see so many parents attending to find out about their sons/daughters progress and what is occurring throughout the school community. Time should now be spent working on the issues that have been addressed before the Semester 1 reports are prepared.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN tests for Years 7 and 9 students will be held on the mornings of Tuesday 10
th May, Wednesday 11
th May and
Thursday 12th
May 2016. Students will be given further information about these tests shortly. We encourage all students to attend on these days to ensure all students can be included in the process and enable parents to receive relevant reports when they are published. If you have any queries or concerns please contact Kathie Toth or Rhonda Greelish.
PHOTOS Most of the school photos arrived at the College this week and have been distributed to the students. The photo company is aware that some online orders have not been printed and they will rectify this and deliver them to the College as soon as possible.

st March 2016 Lisa Li, Year 11C, joined 110 of the
best and brightest Year 12 students from more than 30 schools in Victoria to battle it out for Big Data Challenge Day at Monash Business School. The students interacted with like-minded students from other schools, attended a master class, and were given a problem-solving challenge in actuarial applications, data analytics or business statistics. The challenge allowed them to develop an understanding of how their math skills translated to university study and how these skills apply to real-world scenarios. Throughout the day the participants were mentored by Monash Business School students. In addition, students attended a presentation where they had the opportunity to hear from leading industry speakers in the fields of actuary, data analytics and market research to inspire them and to show the dynamic career opportunities available in these areas. The event proved a resounding success with many students commenting that the day allowed them to better conceptualise the experience of studying data analytics and mathematics in a university setting. Congratulations Lisa on an outstanding achievement! Mr Camilleri, Maths Teacher Pictured: Lisa Li , Year 11C; Lisa with her group at the Big Data Challenge Day
YEAR 9 HPV (HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE) STUDENTS On Sunday 24
th April 2016 the Gleneagles HPV team took to
the streets of Knox for the annual Knox GP HPV race organised by Bridge Builders (a volunteer youth organisation that does some fantastic work with their kids!). It was a six hour event with about 70 teams on track which began at 10.00am and finished at 4.00pm, we only entered one team this year but they certainly did a fantastic job in pedalling for six hours straight and clocking up more than 160kms. We walked away with 5
th place in our Middle Secondary Division
which is a great improvement from our last race and it is great to see the students fitness improving! We still have plenty of work to do between now and the next race (Saturday 20
th
August 2016 in Bendigo) where hopefully we can be a threat to the podium. A special thanks to all of the parents that came to support the team and help out throughout the day and to Beth and Skye Cooper for supporting our team and assisting with marshalling. Also a massive thank you to Brett O’Shannessy for towing our trailer back to school and to Mr Neal for getting it there in the first place. Our team also thanks Bartley Electrics for their generous sponsorship of our program. If you or your business would like to sponsor us and join this
fantastic program then please speak to Mr Bowen and the team
or email Mr Bowen direct at [email protected]

STATE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS, TUESDAY 19TH
APRIL 2016 “CLOSE THE CURTAINS” - MOTIVATION FOR ALL STUDENTS Who doesn’t know the Australian Olympian Swimming Team, their athletic achievements make them one of Australia's most recognisable athletes. How do you think other swimmers feel about swimming and racing against them? It’s a daunting idea, you will feel so small, weak and insignificant. Every bit of preparation and every spark of confidence inside you all seems to fly away in a single moment. You hear spectators screaming their name and waving banners whilst you stand there, hoping your jelly arms and legs will do the job. In this case, you have one thing that matters most: perseverance. There is no point stressing about your opponents because you can never predict their result. 21-year-old astrophysicist Cam McEvoy ended up beating a triple Olympian despite his experience and size. Cam quotes: “Just close the curtains and do your best.” Congratulations to Henry Kuok, 9D for persevering and doing an amazing job at the School State Swimming Championships. Henry finished 3
rd in the Under 15 Boys 50m butterfly and Canis
Nugroho, 10E finished 5th
in the Under 16 Girls 50m Breaststroke and 200m Individual Medley (IM). Both students swam at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) against some of the best age group swimmers in Victoria and even Australia! It is an amazing achievement to do so well at the State level and both Henry and Canis should be extremely proud. Article by Canis Nugroho 10E, Sports Captain Pictured: Henry and Canis
GLENEAGLES WHOLE SCHOOL CARNIVAL, FRIDAY 22ND
APRIL 2016
A RACE TO THE CINEMAS Who says that the reward always goes to the winner of the race? That is not the case at this year’s Gleneagles whole school athletics carnival. The 2016 carnival introduced a new innovation of the “Participation Raffle” which places all participants in a draw to win movie tickets, regardless of their athletic abilities. The twist was that the students that participated in more events had the greatest chance to win, not necessarily those that won the most events. Each student received a raffle ticket for every event they participated in. With the motivation of the raffle tickets, the college saw tremendous amounts of participants across all year levels. The cold weather was no barrier for students as many continuously returned to the track and field to run, throw or jump. Whilst the day saw some extreme athletic talent, power walkers and piggy back racing, it also produced some unexpected competitors.
After a day full of excitement and surprises, the mighty Harriers took the title of the 2016 Athletics Champions. FINAL POINT SCORE
