Congratulations students! reggio emilia summit, icqe 2019-1 As part of the Second International Conference on Quality Education (ICQE2019)-part 1, a summit on the unique early childhood education pedagogy that is the Reggio Emilia Summit, was organized by Rato Bangala Foundation from 20th to 21st July, 2019. e Summit featured two acclaimed Italian practitioners of Reggio Emilia Approach from Italy, Ms Paola Cagliari and Ms Alessia Forghieri. emes explored during the summit included: Image of the Child- taking Children Seriously, From Display to Documentation, Emergent Curriculum, Children- Environment Relationship. e opening ceremony was graced by the Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Mr Chiribabu Maharjan, and Director General of the Center for Education and Human Resource Development, Mr Babu Ram Poudel. A total of 143 participants attended the two day summit, from Nepal- Bhaktapur, Lalitpur Sindhupalchowk, Biratnagar, Pokhara, Doha and India. e summit was an important venue to discuss the Reggio Emilia philosophy best described as education that is centered on children, their rights and their relationship with their surroundings. Educators, parents and concerned citizens can register for the ICQE2019 to be held in Rato Bangala School from 24 -26 August, 2019 at http://rbf.org.np/icqe2019/. environment week RBS celebrated environment week from May 30–June 5. During this week children were engaged in different activities. Each class had their unique way of marking the occasion. e activities ranged from making paper and cloth bags and making posters on Environment Day. e theme of this year was “Beat Air Pollution,” the students sang environment songs, wrote and recited poems, did a presentation on the theme and also participated in a poster making competition on Sustainable Development Goals. e activities also included making art work from recyclable materials and Grade X participating in a debate organized on the occasion of environment day by the A Level Debate Club. As in the past, 5 June was a non uniform day and eighth graders organized book and stationery drive and collected Rs 25 from the students. A portion of money collected, was used to buy books for Laboratory School; while the rest was used to buy stationery material for a school in Kavre. Grade VI students will hand over the materials to the school when they go for their service learning and overnight trip. a level orientation

�e new batch of A Level students went through a week long orientation from 17-21 June. Di�erent sessions were conducted by the A Level team, our Principal, Ms Milan Dixit and Director Ms Shanta Dixit. �e students also went hiking to Phulbari in Kavre, escorted by all the form teachers. �e orientation was fun-¨lled with lots of opportunities to bond with new friends and teachers.

rbs debates

�e Rato Bangala Debate Club hosted the second edition of the inter-school RBS Debate Tournament 2019 from June 14-17 collaborating with Debate Network Nepal. Team WSDC and team Padma from Rato Bangala School reached the ¨nals. Team Padma with Meghna Karmacharya, Saharshaa Dhan Tuladhar and Senchen Subba won the Trophy in the ¨nals. Congratulations students!

Earlier in the year three RBS students Pragyan Acharya (Class of 2019), Anushuya �apa (Class of 2019) and Pratyoush Ghimire won the national debate championships organized by Debate Network Nepal and will be going to the World School Debate Championships in Colombo.

An informal gathering to welcome the new Parent Representatives and the new PTA as well as to thank the outgoing members took place on 24 May, 2019. It was a wonderful opportunity for the teachers and parents to mingle over tea and light snacks. �ank you parent representatives for attending the gathering.

On July 6, the Class of 2019 had their Graduation Ceremony in the Kamalmani �eatre. �e ceremony was indeed very special with 140 smart young students graduating. Prominent historian and director of Martin Chautari, Dr. Pratyoush Onta, was the keynote speaker. Mr Onta also spoke on behalf of the parents of the Class of 2019. Congratulations to the Class of 2019!

trips

Trips are an integral part of our school curriculum and the students across all grades went to various class trips to gain more knowledge on the topics covered in subjects like Science, Social Studies and Language Arts to name a few. Besides the regular class trips, this year, Grade III went to ICIMOD Knowledge Park to learn more about herbs and various other plants.

Some Grade VIII students took part in an Interactive event organized by the Centre for Molecular Dynamics Nepal. �ey interacted with professionals and were able to openly converse with students from a school in the US through video call.

�is term the students of Grade VI became archaeologists and took part in a simulated dig as part of their study of the Indus Valley Civilization. �ey took on di�erent roles as excavators, recorders, and draft persons as they formed hypothesis, excavated and interpreted the site.

international model united nations

Students of Grade IX went to New Delhi to participate in the Sanskriti Model UN 2019. �e students performed exceptionally well and received ¨ve awards in their respective committees.

Students from Grades IX and X also participated in the Indian Model United Nations 2019 held at Apex Life School and came back as winners, fourth year in a row.

Food Revolution Day is a global day of action for people to celebrate real food, where it comes from and how to cook it. �e students followed healthy food recipe and had a pot luck lunch in school.

Grade V had their Ramailo Assembly on 14 June. �e students showcased dramas, dance and songs which were enjoyed by the parents and guests. Congratulations to the students and the teachers for their e�ort.

alumni talk series

�is term we had two RBS Alums share their work with the students.Kushal Harjani (Class of 2005) Co-Founder and CEO of Doko Recyclers talked to Unit II students on World Environment Day. He holds a Master’s degree in Development Economics from the University of Goettingen, Germany and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Economics from Washington and Lee University, USA. His dedication to the environment and a keen sense of social responsibility was an example to the students.

Sneha Shrestha (Class of 2005), accomplished artist and CEO and Founder of the Children’s Art Museum, talked to Grades VIII, IX and A level Art students about her journey. Sneha holds a Master’s degree in Education from Harvard University. During her time at Harvard, Sneha explored the e�ective leadership in education and the intersections of creativity, learning and technology. Sneha Shrestha is also known as IMAGINE in the art world and has established herself as Nepali street artist in the Boston gra®ti scene. Her passion for her work, her connection to her Nepali heritage and her belief in how to go about doing what you love doing, was truly inspiring.

It was a pleasure to have our graduates come to school and inspire the students.

duke of edinburgh’s award

�e Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award participants from Grade X and A Levels completed their Qualifying Adventurous Journey to Nepal Scout Training Centre, Kakani. Similarly another group of senior A Level students also completed their Qualifying Adventurous Journey to Chisapani. �e students were supervised and assessed by their respective Award Leaders.

sports

Several inter-house and inter-school competitions were held for Unit I and Unit II this term. Green House stood ¨rst in both Grade II and III Hopping Catching competition. Blue came ¨rst in Grade III kickball and kho-kho competition. Similarly, Green House stood ¨rst in Grade IV kickball competition and Yellow ¨nished ¨rst among the ¨fth graders. Our Grade IV and V boys and girls played friendly matches with Rosebud School.

Two teams of Grade V, Team A and B participated in the Under 11 To®choo Inter-School Futsal Tournament. Team A reached the ¨nal of the tournament and Team B ¨nished as the semi-¨nalists.

Blue house took the lead in the kickball competition in both Grade VI and VII categories. In Grade VIII however, Green house took the lead. In the Grade VII Basketball competition Green house came ¨rst among the boys and Blue house among the girls. Green house again remained unbeatable in the Grade VIII category.

Inter-class football competition was held for Grade X boys and girls. Among the boys, Grade X A stood ¨rst and X B came ¨rst among the girls.

Our students also played a number of friendly basket ball, football and futsal matches with di�erent schools this term. �e boys also reached the semi-¨nals of the To®choo Junior Futsal Tournament 2019 for both Under 13 and Under 15 category.

bhanu jayanti

206th Bhanu Jayanti was observed at the Kamalmani �eatre on 14 July, 2019. A valley wide Nepali Chhanda Bachan Competition was organized by our Nepali department for this occasion. �e program started with recitation in the morning and Bhanu Samaroha and prize distribution were held in the evening. Sanskriti Basnet of National Creative School stood ¨rst, Udek James Moktan from Delight Kindergarten School came second. Samik Subedi from DAV School and Richa Bhandari from Gyanodaya Bal Batika were jointly given third place and Ojaswi Jha from Kasthamandap Vidyalaya received the Consolation Prize.

Five RBS students recited poems by Bhanu Bhakta Acharya as non-competitive participants.

rbpop updates

We would to thank the outgoing members and welcome new board members for the Rato Bangala Partnership in Outreach Program (RBPOP). Outgoing members Mr Uma Shankar Sah and Ms Milu Shree Shakya have given us valuable insights and advised us over the years. We appreciate their contribution in guiding RBPOP. We welcome new board members Ms Shuvechha Khadka and Mr Bandhu Ranjan. Our current board members are as follows: Chairperson Dr. Shanta Dixit, Vice Chair Person Ms Milan Dixit, Treasurer Mr Uttam �apa, Legal Advisor Mr Ram Prasad Bhandari and RBS parents Ms Kumudini Shrestha, Ms Sheila Chhetri, Mr Shailesh Vaidya, Ms Shuvechha Khadka and Mr Bandhu Ranjan. Ms Archana Joshi is the RBPOP Coordinator.

RBPOP has continued with its Early Childhood Development Project this year. �is is the second year for the 13 LEAD schools for cohort I and 10 more schools in Lalitpur have been added for cohort II. Initial 6 days training for 33 early childhood teachers from 10 schools has been

completed successfully. ECD Project Sharing Program for cohort I, year I was organized. Mr Khagaraj Baral, Secretary of Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Nepal was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Trainees from 13 participating schools shared their learning experiences and the changes they brought in their classrooms after the one year training.

A whole day Workshop for school leaders was organized where the principals presented the changes that have been implemented in their schools after joining LEAD School Project and ECD project.

29 students from 6 schools in Lalitpur districts were awarded with cash and stationery under a yearly scholarship program. RBPOP provided stationery and sports materials to the storm a�ected people in Bara. It also helped Shramik Bal Bigyan Lower Secondary School.�is year RBPOP also provided asmall grant of Rs 50,000 to theDailekh School Network from the Dailekh School Project for which the Rato Bangala Foundation received the UNESCO Hamdan Award in 2012.
