As we come to the end of another eventful year, we thank all the members of the RBS Family for the support and cooperation in the academic year 2016-17. memorial program On 1 and 3 February, 2016 a memorial program was held to pay tribute to our beloved school patron, Mr. Kamalmani Dixit, (Dadaji). Teachers, students and parents across all grades attended the program and offered their condolences. Students recited some of Dadaji’s favorite chhanda ka kabita and shared reflections on their experiences with Dadaji. e legacy that Dadaji left will be treasured at RBS: the love for Nepali language and literature and his contribution in reviving the dying art of reciting chhanda. His cheerfulness, positivity and encouragement in every endeavor will be cherished by each member of the Rato Bangala Family. e best way to give continuity to his work, Rato Bangala realizes, is to continue to work hard, not only in matters relating to the Nepali language, but for the overall development of children, at Rato Bangala and outside our premises. silver jubilee is is the Silver Jubilee year of Rato Bangala School. It is hard to believe that twenty five years have passed since February 1992 when we started the school with 16 students. On 16 February, 2017 Rato Bangala School celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a memorable celebration that featured a big cake which had a replica of the main Rato Bangala building at the center. air purifying plants To mark the beginning of our Silver Jubilee celebrations we initiated a project on collecting air purifying indoor plants. We thank our PTA member Ms. Sheila Chhetri for giving us this idea of putting these plants in our classrooms. ank you RBS Family for bringing the plants to the classrooms. ese plants will provide students with the opportunity to nurture them and breathe pure air in return. bal sahitya mahotsav 2017 e third edition of the Bal Sahitya Mahotsav was held on18- 19 February, 2017. is literature festival was initiated to encourage and inculcate a reading culture in our country. memorial program

On 1 and 3 February, 2016 a memorial program was held to pay tribute to our beloved school patron, Mr. Kamalmani Dixit, (Dadaji). Teachers, students and parents across all grades attended the program and offered their condolences. Two new books, Kamal ra Kitab by Milan Dixit and Haat Bazaar by Sudha Ojha were launched on the occasion along with the English translations of The Story of Bhoto Jatra by Deepa Dixit, Didi’s Scooty by Diwakar Chhetri and Nepali translation of Banthali and Nunthala by Kanakmani Dixit.

The students of Grade VI went to Kavre and conducted a MINI Bal Sahitya Mahotsav. Students led a variety of literary activities and helped set up their library there while the teachers conducted training sessions for the teachers of Bihavar Secondary School, Kusadevi, Kavre on 3 February.

We are very proud to announce that our Director, Ms. Shanta Dixit has received the Best Writer award for her book “Kehi Paye Kehi Gumaye” by the Nepalese Society for Children’s Literature (NESCHIL). Similarly, Promina Shrestha received the Best Illustration award for the book “Bhoto Jatra”.

This year RBS Model United Nations was held from16-18 December, 2016. We were pleased to host delegates from Cathedral School, Mumbai and

various other schools in Kathmandu. The Conference was a huge success. Well done students!

grade vii mun

Like in the past, the RBS MUN club organized a separate MUN Conference for the Grade VII students on 3 March, 2016. A big thank you to the A Level students who helped train Grade VII students and gave them the confidence required to debate and discuss in the committees.

assemblies

Grades I and IV had their Ramailo Assembly on 10 and 22 December 2016, respectively. The parents enjoyed the plays, songs and the dance performances put up by the children.

trips

As a part of their Library Study, students of Grade II went to Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya on 2 December, 2016. Similarly, in order to learn about public transport, Grade II made a trip to Sajha Yatayat Depot on 23 February, 2017.

Grade III had been busy with their City Project this term. For this purpose they made a trip to Champi Village on 25 November, 2016 to observe the differences between village and city life. The students of Grade III also went to Jawlakhel

Zoo on 9 December as a part of their study of the Endangered Animals.

On 10 February the students of Grade VII hiked from Thankot to Markhu in Makwanpur district. The walk was an adventure for our young students. After having spent the night there and visiting the Kulekhani dam in the morning, the students walked for a few hours before boarding the bus to Kathmandu. This was a good opportunity for students to enjoy the outdoors.

On 23 February Grade VIII went to Pashupati as part of their study on the world’s oldest religion. They spent the morning interviewing the pilgrims.

On 9 December Grade IX went to Kathmandu Durbar Square and on 30 November Grade X went to Bhaktapur Durbar Square. These visits to Durbar Squares made them understand the state of our heritage post earthquake.

bakery set up

The very enthusiastic Grade I students concluded their Bakery Study on 16 March, 2017. They baked carrot cake and oatmeal cookies and set up their own Bakery. Parents were invited to taste the delightful cakes, cookies and lemonade and to see the presentation children prepared on the entire bakery study.

As part of this unit, children learnt to bake, write recipes, measure and run a Bakery in the classroom with items they had baked. They learnt to work in team and the entire process of baking provided contextual opportunity for them to develop skills in Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts, all in an integrated manner.

city project display

Grade III designed and set up their own City on 14 and 15 March, 2017 as a culminating activity of their City Project this term. They made 3D models of shops, banks, hospitals, schools, zoo and many other buildings and basic services that make up a real city. Parents interacted with the students and enjoyed the various aspects of the city.

clothes drive

Nayanopan organized a Clothes Drive for the children of remote areas yet again this year. Thank you parents for your contribution. The quality of the clothes you provide as well as the neat presentation makes it a pleasure for needy people to receive your gifts.

The students of Grade IX took part in 15 day adventure course (8-23 January, 2017) organized by Himalayan Mou-ntaineering Institute in Darjeeling.

math quiz

The A Level Math Club organized a Math Quiz for the students of Grades VI to IX on 12 December, 2016. It was an inter-house competition and the questions were set according to their age level. Chandragiri House came first, Nagarjun second and Phulchoki finished third. Congratulations winners and well done Math Club.

sports day

Unit I had their Annual Sports Day on 5 March, 2017. The children displayed great enthusiasm and energy. The PT drills and the athletic events were greatly applauded by the parents. The day ended amidst great cheers for Nagarjun House which stood first followed by Chandragiri, Shivapuri and Phulchoki in the second, third and fourth positions. Shivapuri lifted the trophy for Best March Past.

On 26 February Unit II had their Annual Sports Day which showcased true sportsmanship and energy. Students participated in various Sport events and enjoyed the day. Phulchoki House stood first, Nagarjun House finished second with Shivapuri and Chandragiri in the third and the fourth places. Congratulations to all participants.

football

The junior football team of Rato Bangala School was unstoppable this term. The boys won friendly matches against Pathshala School, British School and Tarapunja School. They won the Lincoln School Football Tournament and reached the semi-finals of the Excelsior Cup and quarter-finals in the G.F.A Tournament. Our girls’ football team also won the friendly match against Tarapunja School.

The senior boys’ team participated in the NISSA Boys Football Championship 2017.

basketball

Junior Girls Basketball team of Rato Bangala School defeated St. Xavier’s School. They also played a friendly match against the British School. The senior boys and girls team also participated in the NISSA Boys Basketball Championship for boys and girls both.

graffiti competition

RBS stood first in the Graffiti Competition organized by Saathi and Ujyalo Foundation. The theme was Gender based violence. Say no to domestic violence. Well done students!

talk programme

A session on dental hygiene was conducted by Dr. Lonim Dixit for Grade IV on 13 December, 2016. Grade IV had another talk program on 28 February, 2017 on Bagmati River by Ms. Shova Kumari Yadav from Institute for Social and Environmental Transition-Nepal. Mr. Prikshit Dhanda from MINDLER did a session on career counseling with the Grade X students on 20 December, 2016.

duke of edinburgh’s award

Duke of Edinburgh’s Qualifying Adventurous Journey for the Bronze Award was completed in December 2016 for Grade IX.

farewell party

Grade IX organized a farewell party for the students of Grade X on 22 February, 2017. Grade IX students put up a wonderful dance and musical performances and entertained the guests.

art event

On 4 March, a group of Grade VIII students attended a one day art event at the British School. The program was hosted by Anne Brown of KISC. The theme for this year was ‘Shelter’.

debate

Saudamini Sigdel of A2 and Prakriti Kandel and Simran Thapa of A1 made it to the Round of 32 in the International Public Policy Forum debate and won silver medals. This experience helped them develop considerable content-based expertise and also honed numerous invaluable skills. Congratulations students! We hope to see more students volunteer next year to participate in this annual event, which saw entries from over 200 schools this year. Organised by the Brewer Foundation and New York University, the topic for the debate was the following: "Resolved: The obligation to provide safe haven for refugees should outweigh a government’s right to control its borders."

goodbyes

We say goodbye to two of our senior teachers. Mr. Manesh Shrestha who started at RBS as a Grade III teacher in 1999 and moved on to be the Vice Principal and Sociology teacher for A Level. Mr. Shrestha has contributed tremendously to help institutionalize RBS and been a stalwart teacher through the years, giving valuable advice and support to the students as well as the teachers and administrators. Mr. Shrestha who decided to retire from teaching, will be dearly missed. Mr. Akhil Koirala worked as the A Level Math teacher since 2006. The students knew that Akhil Sir would always be there to help whenever they went to him. Mr. Koirala is going to his home town in Jhapa where he will live with his parents. Manesh Sir and Akhil Sir will be missed by the RBS family. RBS wishes them all the best for their future and hopes that they will be in close touch and visit us for special occasions.

School reopens for the students on 20 April, 2017. Have a great vacation!
