rato bangala school early childhood centre We are extremely pleased to announce that our Early Childhood Centre started operating from 17 August, 2017. ey held their first Curriculum Meeting on 29 October, 2017. e preschool parents also had an interesting parenting session with our Director Ms Shanta Dixit on 7 November. the reggio emilia approach to education Our Director Ms Shanta Dixit, Principal Ms Milan Dixit and our Preschool Coordinator Ms Sarita Rana are attending the International Study Group of the Reggio Emilia Approach to Education in Reggio Emilia in Italy from 12- 17 November. e Reggio Emilia Approach is an innovative and inspiring approach to early childhood education which values the child as strong, capable and resilient, rich with wonder and knowledge. Every child brings with them deep curiosity and potential and this innate curiosity drives their interest to understand their world and their place within it. school trips is term too the students across all grades went to various class trips to gain more knowledge on the topics they covered in subjects like science, social studies and language arts, to name a few. As part of their art curriculum, Grade V students also went to the Zoo in order to understand observation drawing. As part of their Science curriculum Grade II students went on a trip to hatchery on 30 October to learn how eggs are hatched. On 31 October and 2 November the students of Grade III visited Radio Sagarmatha. ey asked several questions related to radio station to the workers there. Students of Grade V visited Bhaktapur Durbar square to gather information related to their Social Studies topic, Nepal, ethnicities and architecture. ey also visited Patan Durbar square on the 15 August. ey were inspired by the Shikhara and Pagoda style of art and architecture there. ey even made an art work related to these cultures using card boards. Grade V visited Kaiser Library and Garden of Dreams in Thamel on 8 and 9 November. They found the old Rana architecture impressive and also did some interesting post-trip activities in class.

The students of Grade II visited the Awon Library on 15 August. On 13 October, Grade II also visited Jagadamba Press to learn how a writer’s effort is presented in real life. They were fascinated by the machines, their efficiency and precision.

But the three major highlights of the trips this term are the Grade VI overnight trip to Kavre on 27 October, Grade V hiking trip to Jamacho/Nagarjun on 3 November and Grade VIII overnight trip to Lumbini on 10 November. The Grade VI students worked with the students of Bihavar Secondary School in Kusadevi and helped set up a mini BSM in the school. They also enjoyed three hours of hike to Panauti. Grade V on their hiking trip learnt about one of the four hills that surround Kathmandu valley under Nepal study. Grade VIII students visited various monasteries and found out more about Buddhism.

Children of Grades II, IV and VI performed wonderful plays, poems, songs and dances in English and

Nepali for their Annual Assembly. Congratulations to the students and teachers for their effort.

Grade IX put up Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar this year. The characters were brought alive by the students through excellent delivery of dialogues and appropriate costumes. Well done!

Grade I completed their 100 days in School on the 24 October. This day, students and teachers celebrated with fun activities.

The students of Grade III set up their fruits and vegetable market from 11 – 13 November as the culminating activity of their Market Study. They made trips to wholesale markets in Thimi and Lagankhel and Bhat Bhateni Super Market on 8, 6 and 22 August respectively. Among other skills, the students learnt about inter-dependence and about the major differences and similarities of the markets.

This term the students of Grade VIII set up a Coffee House in class to share the poems they had written during the poetry writing sessions. This was truly an emotional gathering of young poets. The various poems written in different poetic forms were of a very good standard. Well done, Grade VIII. Grades VII and VIII conducted Literary Panel in class

based on the class books. The students took the roles of the characters from the books and interacted with each other. Grade IX conducted a Fish Bowl Activity in class based on Julius Caesar. The discussion was very intense and rewarding.

Students of Grades I and II made Tihar baskets, which had diyos and pedas they made in school. Grade II students also sang Deusi-Bhailo songs and brought the festive mood of Tihar. Students of Grade III made marigold garlands to decorate the school area. Grade V students worshipped Goddess Laxmi and distributed prasad to everyone in school. Grade VI students added to the festive mood by making Rangolis in school. What a colourful event!

On 17 October Grade IV observed Mha Puja at school. They made mandaps and enjoyed the bhoj with their friends, teachers and parent volunteers. Thank you parents representatives for organizing a pot luck lunch for the parents. It was a pleasure to have you with us for Mha Puja.

Two groups of A1 students took part in the Doon School MUN, Dehradun and Cathedral School MUN, Mumbai from 18 – 20 August. The A Level students have also been participating in different MUNs namely IIMUN, Rastriya MUN, Singapore MUN. It has been a good learning experience for them. The MUN Club is now preparing for the RBSMUN International Conference 2017 which is scheduled for December 15-17.

rbs math competition

The A Level Math Club organized an inter-house math competition for the middle school students. The competition was divided into two levels, Junior and Senior. Junior Level consisted of grades VI and grade VII and the Senior Level consisted of grades VIII and IX. Orange House stood first in both Junior and Senior Levels, closely followed by Yellow in the second place and Green in the third in the Junior Level. In the Senior Level, Green and Blue stood in second and third place respectively. Congratulations winners and the organizing committee.

Grades VIII and IX had their Math Fair on 3 November and Grades VI and VII on 8 November. The Math Fair was a huge success. The hands on activities were well received by all and revealed how Math is associated with everyday life. The introduction of the use of ICT in Mathematics in this year’s Math Fair was exciting and informative.

college visit

Admission officers from reputed US colleges visited Rato Bangala School this term. Vassar, Bryn Mawr, William, Swarthmore, Richmond and Vanderbilt are among the few. The representatives met with the students, and briefed them about their rigorous academics, admissions process and student life.

In order to keep Dadaji’s memory alive we organized Nepali Elocution contest this year on 21 August, the day being Dadaji’s birthday. The students recited poems in different Chhandas. We hope to continue the tradition and keep Dadaji’s legacy alive.

duke of edinburgh’s award

We are very proud to announce that 43 students from Grade X

and A1 have received their Bronze Award and one student received the Silver Award this year. Students currently taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award completed their Pre Qualifying Journey for the Bronze Award on 28-29 October. They walked from Hazar Seedhi, Dhulikhel to Kali mandir going through Kavre Bhanjyang, and reached Patale Gaun Organic Farm. On the second day they walked from Patale Gaun to Namo Buddha monastery.

adventurous journey pre-qualifying trip for gold participants

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Award participants have recently completed their Pre-Qualifying Adventurous Journey. Adventurous Journey section provides an opportunity for participants to engage in adventurous activities in a new environment with a chance to learn more about their environment. Ten A1 students went to Mardi Himal Trek on 22 – 26 September 2017. Mardi Himal Trek offered views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre and Manaslu ranges. As part of the training and preparation of the journey, Mr Niraj Karki from Astrek Wall Climbing delivered a session on ‘High Route Trek and Altitude Sickness’. The participants successfully completed their four nights and five days expedition with great enthusiasm and determination. They exhibited their best behaviors including good hiking skills and team work throughout the trip. The students were supervised by Mr Uttam Thapa and Mr Kiran Maharjan; and assessed by Ms Pratigya Shrestha and Ms Hima Pradhan. The participating students were Adishri Pradhan, Charavee Basnet, Karuna Gauchan, Nissim Gurung, Pragyan Acharya, Sanghamitra Subba, Shlesha Pradhan, Shuvangini Ranjitkar, Srashta Maharjan and Supriya Sharma.

Tournament organized by St. Xavier’s School on 29 July. They got first position. Congratulations girls! Grade VI boys participated in the inter school football tournament organized by the St. Xavier’s School. Our school team also participated in the Himalaya Under 14 Futsal Tournament.

bal sahitya mahotsav

The Bal Sahitya Mahotsav team is busy working on putting up the annual children’s literature festival which is scheduled for 10 February 2018. We would like to thank the parents for supporting us by contributing the gifts for the raffle tickets. Your support will help us to bring children and teachers from the government schools and offer professional development to enable them to hold children’s literature festivals in their own schools.

rbpop update

Rato Bangala Partnership in Outreach Programme (RBPOP) is working with nine schools in Lalitpur for its Lead Schools in Lalitpur programme. RBPOP’s objective in this project is to contribute in the cultural shift towards child-friendly government schools in Lalitpur. In the last six months, RBPOP has supported in teacher professional development and school management through its training for principals and primary teachers.
