FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

(Prep—Year1)

Welcome back to Term 4! This term, we have a lot of new and exciting experiences ahead of us. Our Prep students have now

officially joined the rest of the school at Monday afternoon assembly. This week, our Preps did an amazing job of displaying our

SPORTy behaviour at assembly. Congratulations Preps!

Our Year 1 students made a splash this week, commencing swimming lessons for the first time in their

school program at Raceview. In the last weeks of term, Year 1 will participate in the Swimming Carnival

with Years 2 and 3. I encourage parents and carers to join in this fun-filled day. More information will

follow in coming newsletters.

Reading and SPORTy behaviour focus

Of course, the focus areas our school is committed to continue to be Reading and SPORTy behaviour. It was pleasing to see

excellent growth in many of our student’s reading outcomes last term. In the younger grades of school, this growth is largely

supported by parents and carers reading with, and to, their children, as well as children reading to parents and carers. I encourage

parents and carers to spend even just 5 minutes a night doing this to support their child/ren.

As our Preps and Year 1s work hard to the end of the year in readiness for the following year, it is very important our students try

their best to display all of the SPORTy behaviours, but in particular, Self-Control and Persistence. Our staff talk about these

expectations daily. Please help by talking about these expectations at home also.

Prep Students of the Week – Reading

Congratulations to the following students who were their class’ Reading Student of

the Week:

Prep A – Jackson D Prep D – Joshua F

Prep B – Mason W Prep E – Cameron G

Prep C – Chayse H Prep F – Seth C

Attendance – Every minute, of every day counts!

Just a friendly reminder that our school day starts at 8:45am. This is a time when

important messages are delivered, daily routines discussed and learning commences.

Please help your child get the most out of their education by ensuring they are at school

by 8:45am.

In Prep, our school day finishes at 2:55pm. Prep students need to be signed in and out

by a parent/carer, unless they catch buses or go to Outside School Hours Care. Please

make sure you are on time to pick up your child from Prep. Thanks for your support

with this.

Prep Enrolments

In Weeks 4 and 5, our 2018 Preps will be attending interviews in the school. If you have a 2018 Prep child

(born between 1 July 2012 to 30 Jun 2013) and you have not yet commenced the enrolment

process, please contact the office as soon as possible. Once interviews are conducted, our Preps will

participate in a series of 4 orientation days across November each Monday. This is vital for both your child

and the school to begin building confidence in readiness for 2018 but in also establishing strong relationships

with peers and the teaching staff in Prep.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

(Yr 2—Yr 3)

Welcome Back to Term 4!

The last term is always a very busy one with swimming lessons and carnivals, the rainbow run, end of year assessments and

reporting. It is very important that you ensure your child is attending every day so that they are well prepared for the curriculum

demands of their next school year.

If you are planning to withdraw your child/children early, please contact your child/children’s

teacher so that they can let you know when the assessments will be taking place.

Jonathon Thurston has been involved in the making of a short YouTube clip about attending

school. You will be able to find this by entering ‘Jonathon Thurston Every Day Counts’ into

your search engine. Some of your children may enjoy this very short clip.

Reading Results Years 2 and 3

Mrs Sheehan and I discussed the reading results for all of the years 2 and 3 students this week. Along with their final results, we

looked at the improvement that each child has made from the start of the year. We were very pleased with the achievements in

reading and urge parents to continue reading to and with your child to help them become successful learners.

Here is a reminder of two areas of questioning that you can use to assist your child with their comprehension when reading at

home. The students are familiar with these posters as they are used in all classrooms across the school.

‘Right There’ – This tells students that the answer to a comprehension question can be found directly in the

text that they are reading. Often, the words in the question are in the text. This makes it easy to find the

answers. These types of questions often begin with:

What did…? Who did…?

Who did…? How many…?

How many…? Name…

‘Think and Search’ – Some questions require students to re-read the text and search for answers, piecing

together bits of information throughout the story. These types of questions often begin with:

How do you...? What happened before…?

What happened to…? What happened after…?

Why does…? Where did…?

SPORTy Behaviour

While visiting 3E this week, I noticed how organised all of the students were for

their learning. Every child in the class had exactly what they needed for the writing

lesson already out and organised on their desks! What great SPORTy Behaviour!!!!!

Well done 3E!!!

Healthy Start to the Day!

River 94.9 fm provided our school with approximately 80 packets of apple slices last

week. These were distributed to students who were waiting patiently under A

Block for the school day to begin.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

(Yr 4 and Yr 6)

Welcome back and we are already 2 weeks into the term! Hard to believe the year is almost over. In the meantime

though, we still have lots to do! Thanks to staff, students and parents for the smooth start to Term 4 as well.

Term 4 is incredibly busy with preparation for upcoming

Swimming Carnivals, Xmas Concerts, Graduation, Music Awards

Night and Leadership Camp, just to name a few! As well as all of

these exciting events, there is also still plenty of learning to be

done before the year is out. Students are encouraged to apply

those SPORTy behaviours consistently each day in order to end

the year successfully. Our lessons this term will focus heavily on

self-control and persistence.

Year 6 at Bremer

Each Tuesday morning there has been a group of Year 6 students

who have been visiting Bremer High to participate in literacy and

numeracy activities. This week I was lucky enough to attend with

the students and saw some amazing things going on with this

program. A huge’ Thank You’ to Mrs Martin for her organisation

to get our students there as well as a big ‘Thank You’ to staff at

Bremer SHS who are working with our students.

Swimming

At last the weather is warming up and we can get back into the pool! This week

was our first week of swimming for term 4 and everyone had a great time! Don’t

forget to bring your swimming gear each week and please don’t forget some

sunscreen. We are so lucky also to have some great parent helpers who join us

each week to help out with swimming lessons.

XMAS Appeal

Student Council are holding a Christmas Appeal for the RSPCA again this year. As a way to raise some funds we will

be having an ice cream day on Tuesday 7th November. On this day the Student Leaders will serve ice cream cones,

with or without sprinkles, from the hall at both breaks. Ice cream cones will cost $1.50 and all money raised will be

used to purchase pet food and pet toys to donate to the RSPCA. Depending on the success of the fundraiser, we may

even be able to support some smaller animal rescue groups as well. As well as our ice cream day, there will be a

donation box in the office for any pet food or pet toy donations that you may like to contribute. A few years ago we

supported the Ipswich AWL and last year we supported the RSPCA. Our generosity was greatly appreciated.

Day for Daniel

Friday 27 October is Day for Daniel. On this day we ask our

students to wear a red shirt instead of their school shirt. The day is

not a fundraiser or a Free Dress day. It’s a day to raise awareness

for personal safety and an opportunity to remind children of ways

they can keep themselves safe.

NEWSFLASH

BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL RED BALL TENNIS

GALA DAY

Last Thursday, 74 students from years 1 – 4 travelled to

the George Alder Tennis Centre at Leichhardt for the

Brisbane International Red Ball Tennis Gala Day.

Students were split into teams of 8 – 10 to compete in a

number of round robin games against students from

other schools in the district.

Out of the 12 teams competing in the competition,

Raceview State School made up 8 of these teams which

was an outstanding effort by our school. At the end of

the day, one of year 4 teams tied their final match with

IGS to finish tied for third place overall.

I would like to say a very big thank you to the parents

and staff members that travelled with our teams and

supported them on the court or as spectators

throughout the day.

Without your support, we would not have been able to

provide our students with this wonderful experience. I

would also like to congratulate all 74 players for your

efforts during the day.

I had a number of positive comments about our

behaviour, effort and sportsmanship from staff of other

schools and from the gala day organising committee and

Tennis Queensland officials.

GOLD COIN DONATION FREE SWIMS

Starting this week, and running for the

remainder of the term, we will be holding

gold coin donation lunch time swims for

Years 1 – 6.

All money raised from these gold coin swims will go

towards updating our wireless/portable PA system on

the oval for our sports days and other school events.

The following is a timetable for these sessions (They will

run until the end of Term 4):

Monday 1st Break – Year 2

Tuesday 1st Break – Year 3

Wednesday 1st Break – Year 5

Wednesday 2nd Break – Year 4

Thursday 2nd Break – Year 6 (and swimming voucher holders)

Friday 1st Break – Year 1

We hope these fundraising swims will be supported by

all students and we invite parents that are able to help

supervise to come along and enjoy the fun with your

children and their peers.

SWIMMING TIMETABLE CHANGE

There has been a minor change to the swimming

timetable for Term 4. 1E will now swim at 12:45pm on

Tuesday afternoons.

SCHOOL BANKING

NEWS

School Banking at Raceview State School is on

EVERY THURSDAY

Here are our Future Saver Themed Rewards for 2017 (Cyber

Handball & Colour Change Markers have been released in Term 1)

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young

Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits.

Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through

School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and

redeem for exciting rewards.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school.

Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever

School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the

school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a

Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an

account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online

Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

CTRL+ Click on the link above to be directed to the information /

application page. Find “ OPEN NOW” to open a Youthsaver

account, even if you are not a CBA customer ( Takes approx. 5

minutes with online ID available )

2. In branch

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself

and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver

account they can start banking straight away. They just need to

bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their

Dollarmites deposit wallet.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask

for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the

school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

RACEVIEW STATE SCHOOL

The Ipswich Hospital Foundation Walking

Schools Program is running at Raceview State School.

The Walking Schools program involves an IHF volunteer

walking students around the school grounds on a day morning from 8:15am to 8:35am approximately.

This is a great way to get kids moving and closer to their recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity as well

as engaging them before school.

The Walking Schools Program provides children with incentives and goals to work towards to keep them

interested and engaged.

A permission form has been given to all students to complete for the program.

If you would like more information about the Walking

Schools Program or would like to be involved, please feel free to contact Kayley from the IHF at

[email protected] or on 1300 736 428.
